Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

The AFL has announced that Gold Coast will have a bye in Round 1 next year. So these stats relate to byes:

1. The only teams to have never had a bye in Round 1 are St Kilda, Hawthorn and Adelaide. (University, Fremantle and Port Adelaide have never played in a season that had byes).

2. Between 1915 and 1924, when the League had 9 teams Geelong always had the bye in Round 1 (1915, 1919-1924).

3. Geelong couldn't repeat that in 1942 and 1943 as they withdrew from the VFL during WWII. In 1942 with 11 teams and a 16 round season, some teams had 2 byes (Ca, Co, No, Fo, St) while the others had just 1 (Ha, Es, So, Me, Ri, Fi).

4. In 1943, perhaps due to criticism of the inequities of the previous year, after each team had played each other once, and thus, had had a bye, the bottom team (St Kilda) was sat out for the remainder of the season.

5. Of the 12 sides to have had a bye leading into finals, 4 returned from the week off with a win, 4 returned with a loss and the other 4 didn't make finals.

6. St Kilda is the only side to have had a bye in the last round more than twice (4 times).

7. The Brisbane Bears (R24, 1994) are the last side to have had a bye.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

1. The only teams to have never had a bye in Round 1 are St Kilda and Adelaide. (University, Fremantle and Port Adelaide have never played in a season that had byes).
Relating to this and other facts:
  1. Adelaide are the only team of the fifteen from 1991 to 1994 to have never had a bye in conjunction with another club
  2. Sydney had a bye on opening day every year from 1991 to 1993; Footscray and Hawthorn never had a bye in Round 1 between 1991 and 1994.
  3. St. Kilda’s Round 22, 2010 score of 5-7 (37) was the nine hundredth score of five goals since the VFL formed in 1897
  4. The lowest scores of St. Kilda and West Coast against each other are equal:
    1. West Coast: 3-11 (29) in 1992
    2. St. Kilda: 4-5 (29) in 2000
  5. What is notable about these two equal scores is that:
    1. both occurred in Round 18
    2. in both, the number of goals kicked was three less than the previous lowest for that season

Re: Most goals in a season without winning the club best and fairest

It’s remarkable how kicking a record goal total doesn’t win the club best and fairest. Lockett did win it twice with lower goal tallies for teams that were never as good as St. Kilda could be in 1992: they kept Hawthorn goalless in the second half and thrashed eventual premier West Coast by 66 points.

Most players to play their final VFL/AFL game in one match:

Code:
9 1950 SF [COLOR=Navy]Me[/COLOR] 9 [COLOR=Navy]Ge[/COLOR] -
The top entry was University’s last match. Surprisingly, only 6 players (all Fitzroy) never played senior AFL football again after the Lions’ final match (R22, 1996 v Freo) at Subiaco.
That 1950 case is particularly telling.

Melbourne won only one match in 1951 and broke the seemingly endless monopoly of the wooden spoon by Hawthorn and St. Kilda during that period. Although the Demons had been a genuine force since 1936 except when decimated by the loss of players to World War II, they retained a rigid tradition of amateurism, owing to the influence of the Melbourne Cricket Club which had always been vehemently opposed to professionalism.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

RogersResults,

some really surprising facts out there.

I was surprised that Hawthorn’s first half score of only one goal was only the second in a final since the drawn 1972 second semi! I don’t recall that 2004 game, but I saw that Essendon did manage to get back into the game in the last quarter to lose by only ten points.

At 198cm, Matthew Primus is the equal tallest man to coach a VFL/AFL team (with Percy Jones). Taller coaches tend not to last all that long:

Players making debuts in finals

Some points about that list, Ron the Bear:

  1. very surprising that no players made their debuts in finals between 1986 and 2009! What do you think the cause would be?
  2. the last few players listed were very familiar to me from old VFL Yearbooks. Spargo was a promising player who was decimated by a succession of injuries.
  3. there are quite a few famous players in that list, viz:
    1. Dermott Brereton
    2. Len Thompson
    3. Travis Payze
    4. Ron Bywater (third in 1947 Brownlow)
    5. Don Cordner

Additions in red. So we can deduce that no tall coach has coached any one side for more than 115 matches. Primus needs to coach for 5 full seasons to break the record of Robert Walls at Fitzroy.

I would suggest that the Bulldogs should not be playing a debutant and that 1986 should have remained the last time given that the AFL is a professional sport.

Re: Players making debuts in finals

Massive desperation would seem to be the reason they're doing it.

Not quite.
More like poor planning. He was always going to play if injuries didn't improve. Bad form meant they didn't want to tamper in round 22 otherwise he would have got a game then. In hindsight they should have. I think they thought Higgins was over his troubles.

Actually, the VFL has been a professional sport, at large, for about 90 years. It is true that Hawthorn was essentially an amateur club until the middle 1950s (witness its shocking success rate of 21.55 percent or less than four wins a season to the end of 1953), that St. Kilda could not pay its players enough to be tangible until the same period, and that Melbourne preferred finding jobs to paying players. However, if you look at clubs like Carlton and Richmond, who acquired generous wealthy patrons and were willing and able to pay players for more than the Coulter Law allowed, it is impossible to conclude that the top VFL clubs were not professional eighty years ago.
