Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

What do Melbourne, Collingwood, Richmond, Essendon and Carlton have in common?

Want a clue? Look at the list below....

1900 - Melbourne
1910 - Collingwood
1920 - Richmond
1930 - Collingwood
1940 - Melbourne
1950 - Essendon
1960 - Melbourne
1970 - Carlton
1980 - Richmond
1990 - Collingwood
2000 - Essendon

Yes these are the only teams to have won a Premiership at the start of the decade. So judging by the teams so far this year... and as much as I hate to say it... it looks like the Magpies will be take home the bacon this year... unless Carlton can do a repeat of 1970... but that's just as bad :p

Will any club be able to break this trend from these five clubs this year?

I posted the above on the 24 May this year...

2010 - Collingwood - yep the tradition holds... spooky isn't it?

Now Collingwood's won 4, Melbourne has won 3, Essendon and Richmond have won 2 a piece and Carlton has won 1.

One must wonder if 1970 should have been Collingwood's year but they instead let Carlton into this elite "Premiership to start the Decade Club". They nearly let in St.Kilda in this year!!!

So here is hoping for the Tigers for the 2020 Premiership!

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

1. West Coast are the last team ever to finish on the bottom of the ladder in a 16 team competition.
Your implying the league will never go down in sizeagain

In over 100 years of footy, the league has never gone down in size.

And even if it ever does in the next 100 years, it won't be down to 16.

2010 - Grand Final (Replay) Trivia:

1) 1.8: Least goals to most behinds in a 1/2 time Grand Final score.

2) First time St Kilda has had their score doubled in a Grand Final.

3 ) 3rd time Collingwood has doubled or more than doubled their opponent's score in a Grand Final.

4) 3rd time Collingwood has won a Grand Final in all 4 quarters:

5) First of St Kilda's 6 Grand Final losses to have been in all 4 quarters.

Details and More:

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

  • When Stephen Milne kicked his second goal late in the final quarter of the GF Replay, the scores were Collingwood 15.12 (102) to St. Kilda 7.9 (51). Thus, with 3 minutes 23 seconds remaining, there was a slim chance the final scores could have ended up being exactly the same as the 1954 Grand Final between Footscray and Melbourne.
  • It is well known Rod Carter kicked only one goal in his 293 game career. To achieve this, he had 2123 kicks, meaning that the goal constituted only 0.0471% of his total career kicks. He had 1732 kicks prior to the game in which he goaled, against Melbourne in round 17, 1986.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Has a team won a premiership since numbers began without a 1, 2 or 3 in their side?

As far as I can tell, none of the following premiership teams contained a number 1-3.

1999 North Melbourne (lowest: 4)
1964 Melbourne (4)
1944 Fitzroy (5)
1937 Geelong (4)
1935 Collingwood (4)

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Scott Pendlebury is the first Norm Smith medallist to wear his jumper number in the year he won it. :o

Keep an eye on Sam Reid next year.:thumbsu::D

Cheers for that, surprised it happened so recently.

worbod,

I have never been sure that 2123 kicks would actually be the most for only one goal. For example, Footscray’s John Jillard, although he only played 189 games, could well have averaged sufficiently more kicks per game (in 1965 when he was a “bolter” for the Brownlow, he was getting more than twenty kicks per game form a half-back flank) that he could have beaten Carter’s total. Do you have data that could confirm me wrong, and if so, where did you get it from?

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

It certainly is possible that other players with only one career goal had more kicks than Carter. I posted the info on Carter as he is a reasonably modern player and his stats weren't too difficult to find. I used the well known http://afl.has.it website to discover he had 1443 kicks for South/Sydney and used Chris Donald's Fitzroy book "For the Love of the Jumper" to find he had 680 kicks for the Roys. It is of course well known that it's harder to find kicks, marks and handball stats for somebody from any earlier eras such as John Jillard. As far as I know, the only other players with one career goal for whom you could find kicks statistics are Mick Gayfer and Greg Eppelstun, and neither of them passed 1000.
It is somewhat surprising that Carter averages only 7.2 kicks per game for such a lengthy career.

Premiers who missed the finals for the following two seasons

Team . . .Premier . Seasons missed
Essendon . 1912 . . 1913, 1914
Richmond . 1921 . . 1922, 1923
Carlton . .1938 . . 1939, 1940
Melbourne .1941 . . 1942, 1943
Fitzroy . .1944 . . 1945, 1946
Melbourne .1964 . . 1965, 1966
Hawthorn . 1971 . . 1972, 1973
Hawthorn . 1978 . . 1979, 1980
Adelaide . 1998 . . 1999, 2000

The 1964 Melbourne team hold the overall record for missing the finals after a premiership, which lasted until 1987. The next longest run is by the Essendon 1912 team. After winning the flag that year, the Bombers didn't make the finals again until 1922. They did however miss the 1916 and 1917 seasons during World War I and probably came back into the league needing some time to become competitive again.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Scores Doubled or More!

1 ) The Grand Final Replay was the first time since round 5 2007 that St Kilda had their score doubled in a match.

2) The first team to double their opponent’s score in 4 consecutive matches was Geelong in 1897 and the most recent was Geelong in 2008.

3) Three teams, Adelaide round 1 1991, Collingwood round 1 1897 and Geelong round 4 1897, doubled or more than doubled their opponent's score with their first win in the competition.

4) Eventual Premiers, Essendon was the only team not to have their score doubled at least once in the first year of the competition, 1897.

5) Essendon and WB/Footscray are the only teams not to have had their score doubled in their first year.

More Here:

I'll go ahead and predict an addition to that list next year.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

That's exactly why I included that fact.

Geelong also had their score doubled with Ablett playing so who knows?

In 1897 the closest Essendon got was 32 v Geelong 57
In 1925 the closest the Bulldogs got was 63 v Essendon 111

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

St Kilda are the only team to finish last 100 years apart (1900 and 2000).

Collingwood are the only team to win a premiership 100 years apart (1910 and 2010).

Melbourne, Essendon and Collingwood won the premiership then finished runner-up 100 years apart (1900-03, 2000-03). Collingwood could again join this list if they finish runner-up in 2011.

No team has finished runner-up 100 years apart.

No team has been minor premiers 100 years apart.

BONUS: Essendon are the only team to win a VFA premiership and VFL/AFL premiership 100 years apart (1893 and 1993).

Im assuming Collingwood could also add to that first fact with a win next year...which you neglected to mention ;)
