  3. Sydney/SM in a much longer span have won only three matches where their opponents scored twenty goals; and St. Kilda with the most 20 goal scores against have won only four where their opponents scored 20 goals
  4. North Melbourne have won most matches where their opponents scored 20 goals (nine)
  5. In no match have both teams scored 20 goals by three-quarter time, though in the following games both had scored at least nineteen at the end of the third quarter:

Matches Won/Lost in all 4 Quarters

  • Sydney/SM has not beaten Collingwood in all 4 quarters of a match since 1959.

  • Collingwood has never won more than 2 consecutive matches in all 4 quarters.

  • Geelong in 2007 and West Coast in 2006 are the only Premiers in the last 10 seasons not to lose a match in all 4 quarters.

  • The most matches lost in all 4 quarters by a Premier is 3 by Hawthorn in 1991, to Adelaide, Geelong and eventual runners-up, West Coast.

  • The last Wooden-Spooner not to lose a match in all 4 quarters was Nth. Melbourne in 1956.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Comparing Geelong and Melbourne in recent times is not pretty. Since the start of 2007:

Code:
[B] P W L[/B]
[B]Geelong[/B] 63 57 6
[B]Melbourne[/B] 57 9 48

Geelong love thrashing Melbourne as much as they do Richmond.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Thought I'd just bring this up again...

Geelong lost in the famous '89 Grand Final 144 to 138.

13 + 8 = 21, also how many years ago (as of this post) that GF was played.

Michael Tuck was the premiership captain wearing the no. 17 guernsey that year.

8 + 9 = 17.

(Another WAFL stat for you)

Just doing some checking, and in Round 12 of 1980, Swan Districts beat Subiaco 7-12 (54) to 5-13 (43) for a match aggregate of 97 points.

For the next WAFL game where the match aggregate was under 100 points, you had to travel forward to Round 6 of the 1987 season, when Swan Districts beat South Fremantle 7-12 (54) (again) to 6-8 (44).

That's 589 consecutive matches (including finals) where the total match aggregate was 100 points or above.

In fact, across the entire 1980's there were only five matches where the aggregate was < 100 points, that's 5 out of 881, a percentage of 0.56%

On the flipside (and to illustrate how much of a high-scoring decade it was), there were 28 matches in the same period which had match aggregates of over 300 points.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

On the Day:

  • In 2010 St Kilda defeated the eventual Premier during the season for the 3rd consecutive year. The only other time they have done this was 1912, 1913, 1914.

  • Since 1997 WB/Footscray has beaten the eventual Premier on 9 occasions – the most of any team.

  • Since 2005 every team except Essendon has beaten the eventual Premier at least once.

  • 2010 was the only the 2nd time Essendon has been beaten twice in the same season by the Wooden-Spooner. (Previous 1915 v Geelong.)

In VFL/AFL the longest streak of matches where the aggregate was over 100 was 575 - round 17 1971 to round 20 1975. (1 match in round 16 1971 with an aggregate under 100 and 1 in round 21 1975.)

1961-1970 there were 60 out of 1169 that had an aggregate below 100 - 5.13%
1971-1980 there were 8 out of 1380 - 0.58%.
1981-1990 there were 26 out of 1469 - 1.77%
1991-2000 there were 9 out of 1785 0 0.5%
2001-2010 there were 11 out of 1380 - 0.59%

Aggregates over 300:

1971-1980 - 11
1981-1990 - 20

Harly suprising if you think of the Krakouer- and Carey-era North Melbourne sides having over a quarter of the highest 100 match aggregates in V/AFL football!

(Another WAFL stat for you)

That same day Claremont kicked the lowest score in the WAFL between 1969 and 1994 (I double checked) with 3.4 (22) to South Fremantle’s 8.13 (61). Given Claremont’s amazing forward line of that period (3,352 points in 21 home-and-away games just a year later), South Fremantle’s achievement stands as a remarkable one even in torrential rain and with Claremont making a mistake (at least according to the West Australian) of kicking into the wind when winning the toss. Phil Krakouer kicked all three of Claremont’s goals - a feat amazingly not noted a decade later in The 3AW Book of Football Records.

Premiers - Combined Season Margins 1897-2010

  • 22 Premiers have been ahead of all opponents in combined scores for the season. (Geelong was ahead of all and even with one in 1937.)

  • Essendon in 2000 was the first and remains the only Premier to be ahead of 15 opponents in combined scores for the season.

  • Melbourne 1955, 1956,1957 is the only Premier to be ahead of all opponents in combined scores for the year in 3 consecutive seasons.

  • Carlton 1970 has the greatest deficit in combined scores for the season of any Premier – 175 pts against 3 opponents including a deficit of 100 pts. v the runner-up, Collingwood.

  • Premiers in 2005, Sydney/SM had combined season score deficits against 5 opponents including a 24 pt. deficit against runner-up West Coast.

100 (107) Lowest Scores since 1919

Here are some statistics relating to the 100 lowest scores kicked in the VFL/AFL since 1919, that is since the end of World War I. It is very sensible when studying low scores to exclude scores from the period before and during World War I, when the average score was consistently lower than it has been since 1919.

All in all, there are actually a total of 107 scores listed in the table below, owing to the fact that equal scores of 26 points add up to 107 rather than 100. Scores of 25 points or less since 1919 total 88, so 26 points is the closest to 100 scores.

....Club..........For.....Against
------------------------------------
Adelaide...........0.........3
Brisbane...........2.........1
Carlton............5........14
Collingwood........5........15
Essendon...........4........11
Fitzroy...........13.........4
Footscray.........10.........7

Melbourne..........9........12
Port Adelaide......0.........0
North Melbourne...11.........5
Richmond...........9.........4
St. Kilda.........11.........7
Sydney/SM..........7.........1
West Coast.........2.........4

Some notable facts:
  1. Sydney/SM have not conceded one of the 140 lowest scores since 1920: the only entry against them was 2.6 (18) from their infamous 1919 thrashing of St. Kilda
  2. Of the 92 playing seasons since 1919, 1989 has the most scores 26 points or under with six
  3. 1919, 1920, 1956, 1960 and 1964 all had five of these 107 lowest scores, whilst 1963 had four
  4. Years since 1919 without any of the 107 lowest scores:
    • 1922
    • 1932
    • 1935 to 1938 inclusive
    • 1940 to 1943 inclusive
    • 1946 to 1949 inclusive
    • 1954
    • 1959
    • 1967
    • 1969
    • 1972 to 1976 inclusive
    • 1979 to 1983 inclusive
    • 1985
    • 1986
    • 1990

    • 1998
    • 2000 to 2003 inclusive
    • 2005 to 2008 inclusive
    • 2010
  5. Collingwood’s 2.13 (25) is the sole winning score amongst the 107 lowest scores since 1919.

Grand Finals - lesser known facts

  • Of teams that have played in at least 6 Grand Finals, Geelong has played their last 6 in the least number of years – 21.

  • Melbourne and Hawthorn have each scored a total of 1,568 pts. in their Grand Final matches.

  • There has only been one Grand Final where neither of the teams finishing 1st and 2nd on the ladder played.

  • 12 Grand Final pairs have each lost their first match of the season.

  • St Kilda and Geelong share having the most even quarter scores in a Grand Final.

Round 13, 1980.

Greg Wells for Melbourne plays Fitzroy and gathers a freakish 48 possessions...in his last game for Melbourne. He then traded himself to Carlton and two rounds later, lined up against...Melbourne.

Each team’s Best/Worst Result After 1-22 Matches in the Season:

  • 2010: Adelaide’s worst result from matches 2-14 in a season.
  • 2010: Richmond's worst result from matches 5-9 in a season.
  • 2010: Fremantle's best result from matches 1-19 in a season.
  • Adelaide has least worst result from matches 7-22.
  • The least worst results from 1-22 matches are shared between only 4 teams – Adelaide, Fremantle, Port Adelaide and Essendon.
  • Collingwood only has the best result of any team from 2 matches (1901) and 18 matches (1929)
  • St Kilda has the best result of any team from 13,14,15,16 and 17 matches.
  • Fremantle’s and Port Adelaide’s best results from 2-11 matches are only better than University’s best result from 2-11 matches.

Oh my God, that is massively freakish on many levels. Who else kicks 18 in a losing side? And who else kicks over 25 goals in a side that kicked less than30 goals that day?

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Guinness World Records:

Doug Ensor (Noble Park) broke all known records in goalkicking. During one U/12's match in 1967, Dougy sent sixty shots through the big sticks out of his team's sixty-nine that afternoon.

Second goes to S (name unknown) Cooke, who kicked 46 out of Geelong West Rooster's 110.27 in the infamous U/19's VFA game in 1983 (despite records saying that he was playing for Coburg at the time)

Manuka in one 1983 Canberra League (I dunno what you call it) match booted an unstoppable 21.4 in one quarter.

Despite Alex Lang and Doug Fraser earning five year suspensions, the longest goes to Northcote's Jack Perkins, suspended for 25 years for unknown reasons. However, to avoid the suspension, he joined St.Kilda in 1934 and even captained their side in 1936 (his final year).

The highest score by a team that won by less than ten goals goes to Richmond in 1985, who kicked 29.14 (188) and still won by just 39 points.

Other interesting stories:

A VFA match between Carlton and South Yarra in 1869 was abandoned because of a nearby park ranger who told the two teams that they were destroying grazing land where they were playing.

St.Kilda merged with Prahran in 1888, yet kept their name and colours.

One match in 1903 between Geelong and Essendon was forced into a 25 minute delay because they had no football. A messenger eventually got one, play resumed, and Essendon won by 33 points.

The rule for one player to stand on the mark was adopted in 1924 after a controversial ending between the Round 12 game between Fitzroy and Geelong. Eric Fleming (Geelong) had the chance to win the game after the siren, but three Fitzroy players built themselves into a pyramid on the mark. Despite this, Fleming goaled, and the rules were revised.

Melbourne were involved in two merger talks in three years once. In 1994, there were short-lived merger talks between Melbourne and Fitzroy, which were soon touted. The more famous campaign happened between Melbourne and Hawthorn, which was also denied.

A 1924 Interstate Carnival match between Queensland and Victoria ended in Victoria easily defeating Queensland by over 14 goals. Every Victoria player scored a goal.

In Round 19, 1995, Tony Lockett kicked his tenth goal at the 15th minute mark....of the second quarter. He then knocked his opponent Mark Zanotti to the ground which started a small melee. The Sydney runner went off to tell Lockett to 'cool it', but Lockett misunderstood and spent ten minutes on the bench. Had Lockett understood his runner, he would've possibly broken Fred Fanning's record of 18 goals.

Charlie Anderson, a 20's player, played just sixteen games between 1924 and 1927 - but played those games for four clubs. He played one game with Carlton in 1924, played 11 for South Melbourne between 1925-1926. Mid-season in 1926, he went to Richmond for one match, but came back for one last match in 1927....for Footscray.

Simon Hawking's got a unique status with clubs: He played all his games at Fitzroy (60 matches), but played zero for the next three clubs. One of the eight who was traded to Brisbane for the merger, he didn't play a game. He traded himself to Sydney but failed to play another game. He went off to Collingwood in 2000, but his fitness didn't go right, and he retired.

The same carnival bonny campbell for WA kicked 25 odd goals v the same qld side. WA and SA both spanked the Queenslanders by 20+ goals from memory, but the Vics decided to let every player kick a goal, late in the game backmen were trying to recieve the ball in the back pocket and form a flying v and run the ball the length of the ground for a goal
