Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

In 2002 Fremantle finished with a 9-13 record. All 9 of their wins came in home games. Is this the most wins in a season without winning a designated away game?

Yes.

9 - Fremantle 2002
7 - Geelong 1939, Fitzroy 1988
6 - Geelong 1973
5 - Essendon 1934, Hawthorn 1939, North 1971

Most away wins without a home win is 3 by Hawthorn in 1926.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Just a quick perusal of the current ladder, notwithstanding the Freo/North result would suggest that a new record would have happened, i am sure never before have four sides ever been on 10 premiership points before, separated by percentage!!

Always appreciate the effort Rogers Results puts in with these magnificent stats, there is always something rather unique about every game played. Extra fun too when your side is doing lots of record setting....:thumbsu::)

Also appreciative of resident stats guru Ron the Bear, hope you're back soon, this particular part of Bigfooty NEEDS you!!:footy:

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

1. First time in 92 rounds that Melbourne has been in the top 8.

2. The teams that have been on top more than once after Round 1 since 2000: Essendon (4), Hawthorn (2), Sydney (2)

3. Until this weekend, North Melbourne had never been 16th in any year after Round 3.

4. Last time St Kilda has not been in the top 10 in the first four rounds: 2000.

5. Years that Carlton has been top 5 after the 1st through 4th rounds since 1984: 1992, 1995, 2009, 2011.

Much thanks for the feedback - most appreciated.

Also I second your comment re Ron the Bear. Whatever he got the red card for, it wasn't anything in this forum. His generosity in giving his time to advance the knowledge of all is unsurpassed.

Biggest win outside of the Melbourne area too - we've never won by that much at Corio Oval, Kardinia Park or Waverley.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

In 1962 Essendon became the first premiership side to beat all other finalists in all meetings ~ both home-and-away and finals ~ during the season. The only other season which has seen this occur is with Carlton in 1995. Essendon were playing in a season with the final 4 operating, and achieved 6 wins against the other finalists with an average winning margin of 31.66. Carlton were playing in a season with the final 8 operating, and achieved 15 wins against the other finalists with an average winning margin of 31.26. So whilst the average winning margins are extremely close, Carlton's feat looks the more noteworthy as they had to beat more teams, though it is doubtful that when they were beating Geelong in the Grand Final that year, they realised what they were on the verge of achieving.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Just one observation. Tonight's game in Brisbane and Saturday afternoon's game in Adelaide are part of a streak of 6 consecutive games outside Victoria.

Round 4
- Saturday night (SCG, AAMI Stadium)
- Sunday afternoon (Gabba, Patersons Stadium)

Round 5
- Thursday night (Gabba)
- Saturday afternoon (AAMI Stadium)

It's probably happened before, but I'm assuming it's a rare occurrence.

Therefore, there will have been no game in Victoria for over a week.

Round 4
- Saturday afternoon (MCG)

Round 5
- Saturday night (Etihad Stadium)

Amazing little stat buried away in the 'trouble opening the account' link provided on your webpages there Rogers is the fact that University may very well have their only superlative record in their history. Geelong, thanks to their ordinariness in the late 1900's - 1910 era managed to take until their seventh match to defeat University....which makes them the club Geelong took the longest to break the ice against. Of all the sides to have a stat like that against...University!!!! Lots of lulz there for the Catters.

Perhaps he only kicked (or was credited with) 9 behinds but i thought Gary Ablett Sr kicked maybe 5.11 against the Dogs in a game in 1985, where the Doggies with Beasley etc kicking brilliantly scored 23.8.146 to Geelong's profligate 17.22.124

I had him marked down as 5.11 in my footy record, but perhaps i may have counted a few kicks that were punched/rushed through from a long shot. Not quite sure at what level of interference a punch/touch etc has to be to turn a behind into 'rushed' rather than 'touched' thus taking the score from the forward into the rushed category.

Ken Piesse's biography on Ablett has him listed as kicking 5.8 in that match.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Round 5 2011

1) Geelong's
86th win from their last 100 matches, extending their League record number of wins from 100 consecutive matches.

2) This round sees Geelong break the record for the most consecutive rounds in the top 8 since 1994.

3) Fremantle v WB/Footscray:
One of the 9 closest matches ever played in the VFL/AFL (No more than 1 point difference at each of the first 3 quarter breaks.) Closest match with this criteria that WB/Footscray has ever played in. The 2nd for Fremantle - previous: Round 4, 2010 v St Kilda.
7 pts: Third lowest margin for a match with the above criteria.

4) Fremantle has now played a higher percentage of their matches on Anzac Day than Collingwood.

5) Only the 7th match (from 2,351) that Collingwood has won by 30 points or more after losing the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Previous: round 3, 1990 - 20.8-128 v Sydney/SM 12.21-93. (The first match that Collingwood won by 30 points or more after losing the 2nd and 3rd quarters was in round 14 1898. Collingwood 7.14-56 v Essendon 2.13-25.)
