Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Round 5 2011

1) Geelong's
86th win from their last 100 matches, extending their League record number of wins from 100 consecutive matches.

I think that's it for this record. For Geelong to improve, they would need to win their next 16 games, thus wiping out their loss to Port at Kardinia Park late in 2007.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

1. Collingwood has drawn level with Carlton for most times at the top of the ladder: 319.

2. Collingwood, Carlton and Essendon have been 1st or 2nd more than all other team. However, Geelong is just 3 behind Essendon for number of times in 2nd position and should probably take that record within a few weeks.

3. Before this year, number of times Collingwood has been atop the ladder for at least 4 of the first 5 weeks in the last 50 years: once (1973).

4. Last time North Melbourne were last on the ladder this far into a season: 1984.

5. Collingwood, Carlton, Essendon and Geelong have a mortgage on the top 3 for most times at 1st through 5th on the ladder, with one exception. South Melbourne / Sydney Swans are 3rd on the all-time list for 5th position, just 1 ahead of Essendon currently.

However as these sequences have multiple entry and exit points, Geelong could possibly still achieve a sequence with 86 wins and 14 losses with a higher for and against percentage before then.

Meanwhile not as noticed is that last round West Coast returned their worst result from 100 consecutive matches.

They are starting to lose their wins in 2007 from a current sequence of 100 matches and their status as one of the 'least worst' is in danger.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

^^ good point re percentage

Although unlikely as the next game to drop off Geelong's last 100 is their mauling of Richmond 222-65

Going into that game was the last time Geelong were not in the top 8. They obviously weren't happy about that.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

  1. With their win against Adelaide, Carlton take the outright record for most matches won winning only the first quarter. Previously Geelong and Footscray also had eight.
  2. Carlton equal the record for the greatest surplus in scoring shots by a team winning only the first quarter and the match at eleven
  3. The previous cases of a team with eleven more scoring shots winning only the first quarter and the match were:
    1. Code:
      July 4, 1959, Victoria Park
      Collingwood 6-7 (43) 8-10 (58) 10-15 (75) 11-18 (84)
      [COLOR=Blue]North Melbourne  1-0 (6)    3-7 (25)    6-7 (43)    9-9 (63)[/COLOR]
    2. Code:

  4. This is the 75th case of a team winning only the first quarter and the match. Of these cases, the winning team has had more scoring shots in 49 cases, fewer in 21 and five games have had equal scoring shots.
  5. Of the 49 cases where the team winning only the first quarter and the match has had more scoring shots, in only 17 has it had 5 more scoring shots, but of the 21 where it has had fewer, it has had at least five fewer in ten.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

At round 5 2011

1) Since the start of 1931 Carlton and Collingwood have each won 1,001 matches each. Carlton has drawn 20 and Collingwood 19. (Carlton has played 22 fewer matches.)

2) Since the start of 1980 Geelong and Hawthorn have each won 420 and lost 304 matches. Geelong has had 5 draws, Hawthorn 4.

3) Since the start of 1990 St Kilda and WB/Footscray have each won 246, lost 234 and drawn 8 matches.

4) Since the start of 2005 Carlton and Melbourne have each won 48, lost 88 and drawn 3 matches.

5) Hawthorn has won 3 more matches (834) in 16 fewer seasons (1925-2011) than St Kilda (1907-1915, 1918-2011)

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Scoreless Quarters

1) In the last 2 seasons (2009-10) St Kilda has kept an opponent scoreless in a quarter on 7 occasions.

2) Collingwood
hasn't held an opponent to a scoreless quarter since 1990.

3) Hawthorn has on 6 occasions (1st in 1940 - last in 2003) kept Carlton scoreless in a quarter but never Collingwood.

4)
Geelong has held West Coast scoreless in a quarter on 3 occasions - no other team has more than once.

5)
Melbourne has prevented Collingwood from scoring in a quarter on 7 occasions. On 5 of those occasions, Collingwood won the match. (1 was drawn).

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

This may not be correct, so I encourage any corrections.

This weekend will be just the 24th occasion that < 50% of games will be played in Victoria. In fact, this week will be only the second time that only 2 games are played in Victoria, and this weekend will see the lowest percentage of games ever played in Victoria.

Maybe next year we might see a round with 2 games in Victoria and 6 interstate.

Code:
[B]Year Round VIC INT VIC%[/B]

2001 13 3 5 37.5 (first of 20 such instances)
...
2011 17 3 5 37.5 (last of 20 such instances)
1994 4 3 4 42.9
2011 16 3 4 42.9

How about 7 interstate, wouldnt that be great

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

It took Sam Iles 4 years, 8 months and 26 days to score his first AFL goal from debut...it took him a further 1 minute and 40 seconds to score his second :D

Curious as to which player may have taken the longest from debut to score a goal

1730 days ranks Iles 98th. A sprinkling of great players in that list.

This was a great one from the main board:

Is 107 points turn around in one quarter a record?
I know it 1998 Western Bulldogs led West Coast by 48 points at quarter time then the Eagles outscored them by 49 points in the 2nd quarter for a 97 point turn around.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

That R2, 1942 game above must have been an incredible game:

http://stats.rleague.com/afl/stats/games/1942/111419420516.html

48 goals were kicked in that game, but 36 were to one end, or +24 to one end.

So my question is what is the greatest difference in goals scored to one end of a ground? (say top 10)

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

The 1970s saw Footscray begin an interesting period of seasonal consistency. In 1970 they finished with an 11-11 win/loss record, and then finished 1971 and 1972 also with 11-11 win/loss records, though they missed the final five each time. 1973 saw them slip to a 7-14-1 record, but they improved in 1974 to have a 13-9-1 record, including their Elimination Final loss. 1975 saw them back to an 11-11 record, whereas 1976 saw them finish 11-11-1, including their finals loss. In 1977 they only just missed another 11-11 record when they finished 10-11-1. It may be no surprise therefore that Footscray/Western Bulldogs have finished with the most seasons where they recorded an even number of wins and losses, including any finals played.
