Note though it reflects the final ladder with results in the finals taken into account e.g. St Kilda finishes on top of Geelong in 2010.

Marginally Obscure

1) In 9 seasons, there have been teams that defeated both Premiers and Runners-up in all meetings.
2) The highest any of these teams finished was 5th.
3) The lowest was 14th.
4) In one year the team, finishing 5th defeated both the Premiers and the Runners-up twice with a combined score of 58.62-410 v 44.34-298.
5) In another year the team finishing 5th defeated both Grand Finalists by 38 points in their only meetings.

Football on ANZAC Day:

1. Collingwood and Essendon had never played each other on ANZAC Day until 1995.
2. Essendon has played the most times on ANZAC Day: 33 times (Collingwood 28).
3. Prior to 1995, the three teams to have played the most times on ANZAC Day were Richmond (21), Melbourne (20) and Carlton (19).
4. Western Bulldogs have only played 9 times on ANZAC Day, as many as Fremantle.
5. Fremantle have hosted a game on ANZAC Day 9 times; West Coast have yet to host one.

Round 8 2011



  • Since 2001, WB/Footscray has now played 14 matches where both teams scored 18 or more goals. Every other team has also at least once except Geelong and so far, Gold Coast.
  • Sydney/SM has won the 4th highest percentage of matches v Port Adelaide played outside of South Australia. (Melbourne has won the highest percentage, Hawthorn the lowest.)
  • St Kilda’s 2011 season after 7 matches ranks 82nd from the 113 they have competed in.
  • Melbourne has had 55 seasons with results better after 7 matches and 56 with results worse than their result so far in 2011
  • Hawthorn v St Kilda: Only the 2nd match ever played where one team scored 1 behind in the 1st quarter and 5 or more goals in the 2nd and the other team 5 or more goals in the first quarter and then only 1 behind in the 2nd.

Wanted to fix up a stat that no one has ever got right* on BigFooty, including myself. That is, the shortest list of players starting from R1, 1897 whose careers overlap to present day.

* The previous lists are correct if you consider career span, but not if you want to have every year covered.
eg. Wels Eicke (St Kilda) didn't play in 1916-17 due to WWI
eg. Kevin Murray (Fitzroy) played in the WANFL in 1965-66 (yes, WANFL not WAFL)

I was wondering if you started from Round 1, 1897 and went right through to the 2009 Grand Final, what is the least number of players required where each of their careers overlapped the next.

There was a thread on this very topic last year. It can be reduced to 8 players, starting with the first round of VFL football. The rounds listed are the final rounds in which both linking players participated.

So can someone finish the list, correctly? Not 100% happy with Jack Titus as he only played Round 1 in 1927 (anyone know what happened?). The OP from the Harvey thread makes an interesting point. What if one stipulation was that the two players, before and after, had to play against each other, to sort of pass the baton?

At Round 8 2011


  • Since the start of 2010, after Collingwood and Geelong, Sydney has now won the highest percentage of their matches.
  • Since the start of 2009 Hawthorn and Sydney have each conceded 4,618 points. Hawthorn in 1 fewer matches.
  • Since the start of 2008, Carlton and Sydney have each won 39 matches – 30 fewer than Geelong has.
  • Since the start of 2007, Brisbane, Essendon and Fremantle have each won 40 matches – 50 fewer than Geelong has.
  • Since the start of 2006, Geelong has won 100 matches. Richmond’s last 100 wins start from round 9, 1999.

What's the best coincidence I can think of?

When Brad Johnson had those shots after the siren and missed them both. List of coincidences:

Both times, Johnson missed.
Both times occured in Round 9.
Both times in back to back years.
Both times where a player broke 250/300 games (Brent Harvey and Jason Akermanis) in the match.
Both involved the Bulldogs losing.
Both involved a Victorian team winning.
Both games occured at night.
Both games were played in the Indigenous Round.
Both games were played in Melbourne.
Both last quarters involved Brad Johnson kicking a goal ten minutes before he lost both games.

  • Geelong's 14th consecutive third quarter win.
  • Melbourne have 3 wins, 4 losses, 1 draw from 8 matches. They have only done this once before - in 1911.
  • 37: Most scoring shots by Fremantle v Port Adelaide. Previous: 36 - 23.13-151 v 9.18-72 round 22, 2006.
  • Until half-time, the equal closest Richmond v Essendon match ever played.
  • Only the 4th time that West Coast has had the highest score of the round, had the biggest win and conceded the lowest score. Previous: Round 6, 1996 - 24.12-156 v Melbourne 7.8-50.

Was looking for a link to the excellent footy stats site and stumbled upon this post about a remarkable game re Melbourne vs Richmond in 1942, where Richmond scored 10 and 12 goals in the 2nd and 4th quarters and the Dees 10 in the 3rd.

That R2, 1942 game above must have been an incredible game:

48 goals were kicked in that game, but 36 were to one end, or +24 to one end.

So my question is what is the greatest difference in goals scored to one end of a ground? (say top 10) (quote Red and Black)

One amazing thing that i noticed was that the Tigers had FIVE 'Jacks' playing for them, the Demons had two. Would there be any more than five of any other name all in the one side ever before, and would seven Jacks be the most of any particular Christian name in any match ever played?

Geelong of recent times did have four Toms:- Hawkins, Harley, Lonergan and Gillies....

Thanks for that Ron, seven of the one name in a side is amazing, hope they all weren't nicnamed Jacko or something!

When i cut and pasted the original post by Red and Black it didn't show up as quoted like it would normally do, but then again i'm not much chop with the computer.


With the names, undoubtedly the more 'Anglo' mix of Australia in pre-WW2 era would contribute to so many names like Bill, Jack, John, Peter etc.

Doubt we'll have a side with seven Chances or Ty's!:D

By round 9 2011 all teams had scored or conceded 10,000 points from some time in either 2006 or 2007.

1) Geelong has scored their last 10,000 points in 28 fewer matches than Melbourne - 90 v 118.

2) Collingwood and WB/Footscray have both scored their last 10,000 points in 99 matches.

3) Adelaide, Port Adelaide and St Kilda have all scored their last 10,000 points in 112 matches.

4) Richmond have conceded their last 10,000 points in 35 fewer matches than Geelong and St Kilda - 92 v 127.

5) Carlton, Essendon, Melbourne and Richmond are the only 4 teams to have conceded 10,000 points starting after 2006.
