That's pretty amazing for a team that, since inception, has been consistently rubbish.

In that time they have received some schellacking's too.

I thought it only fair to find something where they came out on top.

It is somewhat surprising, but losing each quarter by just 3 goals or more is very, very rare.

It has only happened in 68 of 13,918 matches played to date.

That it has happened 4 times this year is extremely unusual - including 3 in consecutive rounds - R18 St Kilda v Adelaide, R19 Geelong v Melbourne, R20 Collingwood v Port Adelaide.

The most in a whole season has been 4 in 1994. Most seasons (73) it hasn't happened at all.

There were none in 2010 or 2009.

Geelong in round 18, 1933 is the only time it has happened to them.

St Kilda has lost the most games by 3 or more goals each quarter - 9.

After Gold Coast, Adelaide has the highest percentage of matches lost by 3 or more goals each quarter - 1.24% of matches played. (6/482)

Geelong has won the most matches by 3 goals or more each quarter - 10.
And Adelaide has won the highest percentage of matches played by 3 goals or more each quarter - 0.83%. (4/482)

Up to 2009 when they won four matches by 60 points, WB/Footscray had never won more than three matches by 60 points in a season. (They won seven in 2010 and have won three in 2011.)

Noticed that Richard Tambling is (perhaps) set to play under his fifth AFL coach in the space of 34 games. Thought this may be close to a record, however some research turned up the following...

281 players have played under three different coaches in three games - most recently Scott Harding, in the final three matches of his 50-game career: Michael Voss in the 2009 Elimination Final, Mark Williams in 2010 R1 and Matthew Primus in 2010 R16.

The shortest stretches of games played while playing under four or more coaches is given by the following table:

We don't talk about that season. We'd prefer everyone just forgot that it took place.

Sorry it came up again. :)

Although they were one off equaling the most 10 goal defeats in a season, the Eagles' points for and against deficit for 2001 (-882) only ranks the 15th greatest from 22 matches. In 2011 with 4 matches to go Gold Coast has already achieved a deficit of 1,030 and Port Adelaide a deficit of 731, so the 2001 Eagles ranking could improve 2 places.

Port Adelaide's last two games have returned 53 pts. Last time a two game haul netted less was Fitzroy Rds 14-15, 1964. (4.3.27 & 2.9 21)

All time is St Kilda Rds 13-14, 1899 (1.2 8 & 0.2 2)

Round 21 2011:

Only the 7th match of the 153 that Collingwood has won v St Kilda where they had fewer scoring shots. Previous were in years: 2008, 1975 (2), 1934, 1931, 1906.

6.16: The highest factor that Hawthorn has multiplied an opponent's score by. Previous: 4.71 times round 12, 1988 - Hawthorn 10.20-80 v Brisbane 2.7.17.

The last time Carlton defeated Fremantle was round 14, 2009 - their score was also 16.19-115.

Gold Coast's percentage of 54.18% is the second lowest recorded after 19 matches. Lowest: Fitzroy 1996 - 51.79%

One of 4 occasions where Essendon has scored 7 or more goals with 0 behinds in the first quarter. Previous: 8.0-48 v West Coast round 3, 2004. 7.0-42 v St Kilda round 1, 1992. 8.0-48 v Richmond round 11, 1979.

West Coast's 5th win outside of W.A. this year after winning a total of 3 in the last three seasons.

43 pts: Richmond's biggest win v Sydney/SM since 79 points round 9, 1990 - 20.19-139 v 9.6-60.

Only the 2nd match that Adelaide has lost, losing only the 2nd quarter. Previous: Round 5, 1994 13.5-93 v WB/Footscray 17.8-110.

Intruiging how Collingwood have just seven entries on this list in all of VFL/AFL history given they have won more games than anyone else (1439 games) http://afl.allthestats.com/index.ph...7:all-time-ladder&catid=34:all-time&Itemid=56

Perhaps the stereotypical idea of the Pies being a hard-working club perhaps lacking the finess and skill of other sides in times gone by could be reflected in this stat. Mind you, the Pies right now could well lay claim to being the best ever Collingwood side, with plenty of flair, skill and the hard-nosed pressure that Malthouse has instilled into them. They may well add significantly to that total of seven entries in the coming few years.

71% of the greatest winning margins are from 1982 on.

M/W% 1982-2011
Hawthorn 58.88%
Essendon 58.58%
Geelong 57.77%
(West Coast 55.15%)
Nth Melbourne 53.56%
Carlton 52.96%
Collingwood 52.76%

You have to go back to 1927 to find a starting year from where Collingwood has won the highest percentage of matches.
(Not too many Magpie fans alive who could say that their team has won the highest percentage of matches in their lifetime.)

Only 7 of the highest 100 winning margins come from before 1927.

Magpie teams of the 70's had some flair (3 of their 7 entries come from then) but before this years thrashing of Port, Collingwood's most recent entry in the top 100 was from 1991 (v Adelaide).

The 100 Biggest Losers (118 to 190 points)

In one season so far Gold Coast has 3 entries on the list, the same as Collingwood has from 115 seasons.

Of teams on the list of 100 biggest losers, Geelong has the oldest entry - round 21 1986, followed by Collingwood round 16, 1987.

Of teams on the list, Carlton has the least entries - just one - round 22, 2003.

Fremantle is the only team (besides University) to not to be listed as their biggest loss so far is only 117 points.

Am I reading it right that Uni and Freo (the two least successful clubs) have also avoided the biggest losses?

Currently the 100 biggest losses in VFL/AFL history range from 118 to 190 points.

The biggest loss that University suffered in their career in the League was 89 points, which is currently the equal 437th highest losing margin recorded.

Fremantle's biggest loss has been 117 points, which is the equal 101st highest losing margin recorded. Up to the end of 2010 this ranked as the equal 94th biggest losing margin. There have been 7 margins above 117 points this year, so Fremantle has lost its place in the group.

At the end of 1914 when the University club ceased competing in the League, their 89 point loss was the equal 18th highest. University dropped off the list of the 100 biggest losses in 1958 when the range moved to 90 to 171 points.

Just 118 of 13,777 matches won in the VFL/AFL have been by teams that trailed by 24 points or more at 3/4 time.

The most in one season was 6 in 2008. (The next most was 5 in 1944.)

There has been 1 this year - Gold Coast v Port Adelaide.

There were none in 2010 and the only one in 2009 was Brisbane's win over Carlton in the Elimination Final.

Prior to the above match, the previous final won by a team trailing by 4 goals or more at 3/4 time was Essendon's 2 point win over Collingwood after trailing 5.7-37 to 9.7-61 at 3/4 time in the 1951 Preliminary Final.
(Collingwood also lost the 1945 Preliminary Final to Carlton after leading by 28 points at 3/4 time.)

The biggest win by a team trailing by 4 goals or more at 3/4 time was 37 points round 2, 1941 - Essendon 11.7-73 v Nth Melbourne 15.11-101 at 3/4 time - final score: 22.13-145 v 16.12-108.

Half of these matches occurred up to round 7, 1968. The other half from round 15, 1968.

17 teams have won matches by 1 point after trailing by 4 goals or more at 3/4 time. Most recent: Geelong v Fremantle round 6, 2008.

Fremantle and Port Adelaide are yet to win a match where they trailed by 4 goals or more at 3/4 time. University never did.

All other current teams have won at least 1 match in the last 20 years after trailing by 4 goals or more at 3/4 time except Hawthorn. The last time the Hawks won in such a situation was round 2, 1956. (They beat Richmond by 21 points after trailing by 25 at 3/4 time.)

With the exception of Gold Coast, Brisbane has the highest percentage of matches won after trailing by 4 goals or more at 3/4 time - 0.7% of matches played (4 times.)

Hawthorn has the least - 0.11% of matches played (2 times).

Carlton has won the most - 12, followed by Collingwood, Geelong and WB/Footscray - 11 each.
