My guess is that Richmond 1967 with Kevin Bartlett's departure in 1983 could be the longest surviving premiership team, followed by Richmond 1934 with Jack Dyer playing until 1949 - but maybe there are others, I've not thought of.

What could be interesting is the longest at least 6 of the premiership team stayed on the playing list.

Interesting that in the list the latest is Essendon 1993 (the 'Baby Bombers'). Suggests that premiership teams are becoming more mature with players not debuting until they are of a more mature age.

Average debut ages in different eras would be interesting to see and who were the last under 19's to play in a Premiership team besides Fletcher and Mesiti in 1993.

Hawthorn's Round 17 Hoodoo.

Since winning their 5th consecutive Round 17 match in 1991 (v Sydney), Hawthorn has played 19 Round 17 matches. Their record has been:

3 wins: (1993 v Sydney and 2001, 2005 v Carlton)
15 losses: (Average losing margin 35 points.)
1 draw (2010 v St Kilda.)

In 2011 they were given the mercy of a bye. In Round 17 2012 they play Collingwood.

Every other team including Gold Coast has won a Round 17 match since Hawthorn last did in 2005.

Only Cats in the 'Black'.

In the last 20 seasons, only Geelong has scored more points than they have conceded in matches against the eventual top 4 placed teams. Next best is Collingwood, with Richmond most in the 'red'.

Tom Fitzmaurice could have gone three - played in Geelong's 1925 GF win and the best and fairest for Geelong that year is not recorded.

I wonder too who Essendon deems are their "Premiership players" for 1924.
All who had a senior game? Those who played in all three finals or just those who played in the final against Richmond and who managed to keep the loss above where a grand final would have been needed?

I think that table might be a 'world first'. I don't remember ever before seeing a count of how many times the reserves and U-19's finished on top of the ladder. Well done.

As for the vexed term "minor premiers", I recently came across a proposal for its reinstatement in 1936 (after being in abeyance for some 30 years) which involved a split into two 'conferences' and a redraw after each team had played the others once. After which would follow a version of the final 8 and then a final 5 with one team (not necessarily the team on top of the ladder at the end of the first round) given the title of "minor premier" and having a bye like the winner of the 2nd sem-final in the final 5 system of 1972-1990.

The proposal which involved the elimination of the bottom 4 teams after 16 rounds (to "save them losing more money") was of course not taken up by the League.

Here is a watered down answer to a question I asked in the questions thread.
I've looked at the relationship between a teams total hitouts, clearances and final ladder position over season 2011.

The relationship between a teams average hitouts and clearances across the season was very weak to non-existent (r = 0.188).

The relationship between average hitouts and final ladder position also appears rather weak. This is the ladder sorted by team hitouts per game:
West Coast 50
Adelaide
Melbourne
Brisbane
Sydney
Carlton
Fremantle
North Melbourne
Essendon
Hawthorn
Geelong
St. Kilda
Western Bulldogs
Collingwood
Richmond
Port Adelaide
Gold Coast 29

The relationship between team clearances per game and ladder position seems a bit stronger. However, the spread in averages in much less than it is re: hitouts.
Sydney 43
Collingwood
Carlton
West Coast
Essendon
North Melbourne
Gold Coast
Western Bulldogs
Fremantle
Hawthorn
Melbourne
Richmond
Adelaide
Brisbane
Geelong
Port Adelaide
St. Kilda 29

Gold Coast (+9) and Collingwood (+8) had the largest positive differential between hitouts and clearances.
West Coast (-10) and Adelaide (-9) had the largest negative differentials.

The record for playing at the most different venues is 19, held jointly by Paul Salmon and Robert Harvey.

Andrew Embley is the leader among current players with 15 (ranked equal #81). West Coast is scheduled to play away games in 2012 at Blacktown Park and Blundstone Arena, which potentially takes his tally to 17. If Embley can eke out another season in 2013 at 32, and the Eagles travel to Skoda Stadium, Cazaly's Stadium and TIO Stadium, he could take the record...

Yes it's the off-season.

I wonder who has played the most under different stadium sponsor names? Mathew Scarlett would chalk up some extra credits playing at all the different incarnations of Kardinia Park as might Embley.

Selling, 'naming rights' is necessary for football finances but IMO the sponsors' names should be reserved for the commercial media and generic names be used for historical records.

In thirty years time a mention that there was a Sydney team in the AFL that played matches at the Sydney Showgrounds immediately locates things. Skoda Stadium sounds like it should be hosting Hradec Kralove v Slavia Praha in the Czech Liga.

How does it work for old grounds that are now known by a sponsor name but no longer host AFL matches?

Not quite sure what you mean.

Princes Park - Optus Oval - MC Labour Park - Visy Park.?

"Optus Oval" and "MC Labour" Park have no status as the naming rights have lapsed and no AFL games have been played at "Visy Park".

However in writing about Carlton's matches on the oval in Princes Park 1993-2005, if the venue is referred to as "Optus Oval" instead of "Princes Park", then Optus get a free plug and in effect their naming rights in perpetuity.

Technically I think the Carlton Football Club played their home matches 1897-2005 on the "Carlton Recreation Ground" in Princes Park, just as Geelong plays their home matches on the "Eastern Oval" in Kardinia Park.

The only current AFL venues with one unambiguous official and popular name throughout their history, unsullied by commercialism, are the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the Sydney Cricket Ground and Manuka Oval, Canberra. (The Brisbane Cricket Ground is also unsullied by naming rights but how often is it called that?)

In order to conclude which teams were Reserves premiers, I used Stephen Rodgers' 1987 book "The Complete Book of VFL Records". Using the chapter 'Premierships and Finals', and beginning on page 188, I used Rodgers' notes regarding each season's Grand Finalists and Minor Premier. This is part of what Rodgers has written on that page, "Senior results - In all years before 1931, unless otherwise noted, the Minor Premiers are the first team in the Grand Final result."

I have assumed the first mentioned team in the Reserves grand finals between 1919 and 1930 are also the minor premiers in that grade. If anybody else owns this book, you may wish to use it to make sure I have provided the right info for Reserves minor premiers, though I am very sure I got it right.

RESERVES MINOR PREMIERS

1919 Collingwood 1920 Collingwood 1921 Collingwood 1922 Collingwood 1923 Richmond 1924 Geelong 1925 Collingwood 1926 Geelong 1927 Carlton 1928 Carlton 1929 Richmond 1930 Geelong

From 1931 to 1986 it is easy to determine the Reserves minor premier as Rodgers puts a capital M next to the grand finalist who achieved that honour. And if the minor premier did not make the grand final, that team is placed beside the grand final result, again being signified with a capital M.

1931 Collingwood 1932 Geelong 1933 Melbourne 1934 Melbourne 1935 Geelong 1936 Melbourne 1937 Geelong 1938 Collingwood 1939 Richmond 1940 Essendon 1941 Essendon 1942 St.Kilda 1943 St.Kilda 1944 Footscray 1945 Fitzroy 1946 Richmond 1947 Richmond 1948 Collingwood 1949 Melbourne 1950 Essendon 1951 Essendon 1952 Collingwood 1953 Essendon 1954 Melbourne 1955 Richmond 1956 South Melbourne 1957 North Melbourne 1958 Hawthorn 1959 Hawthorn 1960 Geelong 1961 Collingwood 1962 Footscray 1963 Geelong 1964 Collingwood 1965 Collingwood 1966 Collingwood 1967 Richmond 1968 Richmond 1969 Melbourne 1970 Richmond 1971 Richmond 1972 Hawthorn 1973 Richmond 1974 Footscray 1975 Richmond 1976 Collingwood 1977 Richmond 1978 North Melbourne 1979 Collingwood 1980 South Melbourne 1981 Geelong 1982 Geelong 1983 Fitzroy 1984 Melbourne 1985 Carlton 1986 Carlton

For Reserves minor premiers from 1987 to 1999 I used VFL yearbooks and Herald Sun/The Age microfilm.

1987 Footscray 1988 Footscray 1989 Carlton 1990 Carlton 1991 Collingwood 1992 Essendon 1993 Melbourne 1994 North Melbourne 1995 North Melbourne 1996 North Melbourne 1997 Footscray 1998 Essendon 1999 St.Kilda

In determining who were the Under 19 Minor Premiers, I used a database I had compiled on my computer in which I have been trying to record each team's seasonal home and away win/loss record in the Under 19s. The advent of the old VFL records being posted online has allowed me to get to within one season of completing this. However, having stated in post 367 that I did not know the Under 19s Minor Premier for 1946, I completely forgot to refer to Stephen Rodgers' book, the one I have mentioned in the above post. Hence, I can reveal that the Under 19 minor premier for 1946 was Melbourne, and they should therefore be credited with 7 in the Under 19s column and 24 minor premierships all together.

UNDER 19s MINOR PREMIERS

1946 Melbourne 1947 Melbourne 1948 Essendon 1949 Geelong 1950 Essendon 1951 Essendon 1952 Melbourne 1953 Melbourne 1954 Footscray 1955 Footscray 1956 Collingwood 1957 St.Kilda 1958 Richmond 1959 Essendon 1960 Geelong 1961 Essendon 1962 Footscray 1963 Carlton 1964 Melbourne 1965 Collingwood 1966 Collingwood 1967 Richmond 1968 Richmond 1969 Richmond 1970 Richmond 1971 Melbourne 1972 North Melbourne 1973 Richmond 1974 Footscray 1975 Richmond 1976 North Melbourne 1977 Richmond 1978 Carlton 1979 Geelong 1980 Richmond 1981 Geelong 1982 Melbourne 1983 North Melbourne 1984 Richmond 1985 North Melbourne 1986 North Melbourne 1987 North Melbourne 1988 North Melbourne 1989 North Melbourne 1990 Essendon 1991 Collingwood

Rodgers has listed Fitzroy as being the Under 19s Minor Premier for 1956, but the source I used, the Sporting Globe microfilm, has listed Collingwood with 14-2 record, with Fitzroy finishing with 13-3.

Essendon are the only team to have been minor premier in all three grades in the same season, 1950, and also won all three grand finals.

Collingwood are the only team to have been minor premier in all three grades in the same season, 1966, and lost all three grand finals.

Richmond have also been minor premiers in all three grades in the same season, this being 1967. They won the senior and Under 19 grand finals.

For Reserves minor premiers from 1987 to 1999 I used VFL yearbooks and Herald Sun/The Age microfilm.

1987 Footscray 1988 Footscray 1989 Carlton 1990 Carlton 1991 Collingwood 1992 Essendon 1993 Melbourne 1994 North Melbourne 1995 North Melbourne 1996 North Melbourne 1997 Footscray 1998 Essendon 1999 St.Kilda

List should go somewhere: Kevin Taylor's Footy Stats could be interested in putting it up.

Rodgers was not aware of the League's dropping of the title "minor premiers" after 1904.

For any discrepancies or uncertainties 1919-1930 you could check the online copies of the Football Record to see who finished on top of the second eighteen ladder. (They won't mention "minor premier".)

The 1956 1st semi-final edition of the Football Record has Fitzroy and Collingwood third eighteens both on 13 wins on the "Club Championship" table.

Rodgers has listed Fitzroy as being the Under 19s Minor Premier for 1956, but the source I used, the Sporting Globe microfilm, has listed Collingwood with 14-2 record, with Fitzroy finishing with 13-3.

Fitzroy . 13 3 — 880 539 163.3% 52
Collingwood 13 3 — 943 681 138.5% 52

Top two teams - third eighteens ladder 1956.
Football Record - August 11, 1956 (Round 17)
Third eighteens season was 16 matches - finals were not played as curtain-raisers at the MCG.

Melbourne are the team with the longest sequence of having obtained a minor premiership at some level. In 1952 and 1953 they were the Under 19s Minor Premier, in 1954 they were the Reserves Minor Premier, whilst from 1955 to 1960 they were Minor Premier in the seniors, (a record six in a row) giving them nine successive seasons all together.

A long quarter - R15 1924
http://handle.slv.vic.gov.au/10381/131119

Owing to stoppages for free-kicks, out-Of-bounds, and the hold-ups to cool down the overtime at Essendon last week ran to 24 minutes 50 seconds — only 10 seconds short of an ordinary quarter's play.

That's over the odds, but I consider that the field umpire did the right thing to stop the game, as he did. Otherwise, there might have been most unpleasant Consequences.

Start time 2.45 pm - Sunset 5:34 PM - would have been decidedly dim depending on the cloud cover after the extra "quarter"!

Same issue of the Football Record had a description of the South Australian team to play Victoria. They had "rucksters", "wingsters" and Ackland, S. (Norwood), "goalkeeper".

The Adelaide Advertiser as late as 1952 was still referring to full backs as "goalkeepers".
