Gerard Healy just stated on 3AW:

The only side which has won their last two AFL matches is Port Adelaide.

Round 1 2011 it was Geelong and Adelaide.
Round 1 2010 it was just Geelong.
Round 1 2009 it was Geelong and Port Adelaide
Round 1 2008 it was Geelong and St Kilda
Round 1 2007 it was just West Coast.
Round 1 2006 it was just the Western Bulldogs

The finals break all the better teams winning streaks except the Premiers.
If the Premier losses the first round on the next season it leaves only last years non-finalists to have won the last two.

Appears a fascinating piece of trivia at first, but you've put it in its proper perspective.

Geelong did lose their final games of 2010 and 2008, however.

Surely Essendon is the only team of the final 8 era to have a winning record and not feature in the final 8?

16 teams first match - if you win you will be placed (for entertainment value only*) in one of the top 8 positions.

The situation of missing being in the the "8" didn't arise in 2011 with 17 teams because Melbourne and Sydney drew in their first match and Gold Coast didn't play. Melbourne were 8th however with no wins because "M" comes before "S".

With 18 teams one of 9 first up winners will be placed 9th.
With 12 teams two of first up winners were placed outside of the top "4" up until 1971.

With byes in some seasons losing teams have appeared on the ladder in a potential finals qualifying position in the first round.

* The progressive ladder except for the occasions when the League used it for determining a mid-season draft and a re-draw of the fixture in 1943 after the bottom team (St Kilda) was eliminated, has no official status nor function. The final ladder at the completion of all the matches in the 'home and away' season (first round) is the only one that counts as having an official status and function.

Yes I did that a bit quick by eye and made a mess in my excitement to demonstrate that is was not unusually that Port Adelaide at the end of the first round were the only team with consecutive wins..

Should be (I hope)

As RTB suggested, your way of summing this situation up was very good. Just try asking a few football fans to name the one and only team in the competition that's currently on a winning streak (of 2 games)!

For the 1925 season the League introduced Premiership medals for each player, replacing the caps previously presented. Teams receiving the medals have consisted variously of 18,19,20,21 and 22 players.

The figures assume that the medals have been presented each year from 1925 and that all players including substitutes who did not take the field, received one.

From 1983, Geelong and Hawthorn have won a higher percentage of their matches than anybody else.

This is how they stand 30 seasons on at round 1 2012 before they meet in round 2.

Top teams topping everything.

The following is all minor premiers who achieved the ensuing statistics at the end of a home and away season: Most games won, Fewest games lost, Most points for, Fewest points against, Highest percentage

Season Minor premier . Position after finals
1900 . Fitzroy . . . . runner up
1902 . Collingwood . . premier
1905 . Collingwood . . runner up
1907 . Carlton . . . . premier
1910 . Carlton . . . . runner up
1911 . Essendon . . . .premier
1916 . Carlton . . . . runner up
1921 . Carlton . . . . runner up
1923 . Essendon . . . .premier
1950 . Essendon . . . .premier
1956 . Melbourne . . . premier
1957 . Melbourne . . . premier
1966 . Collingwood . . runner up
1975 . Hawthorn . . . .runner up
1985 . Essendon . . . .premier
1990 . Essendon . . . .runner up
2000 . Essendon . . . .premier
2007 . Geelong . . . . premier
2008 . Geelong . . . . runner up
2011 . Collingwood . . runner up

This has happened on 20 occasions, with a 50/50 split in relation to finishing as premier.
In comparison, wooden spooners finishing with the fewest wins, most losses, fewest points for, most points against and the smallest percentage in one season has happened on 36 occasions, but none since 2002.

In case anyone wonders the 1929 Collingwood team unbeaten on top of the ladder, met all the above criteria except that 7th placed Geelong (8 wins, 10 losses) conceded the least points - 35 fewer than Collingwood. (Geelong's percentage of 108.6 was the highest for a team with 8 wins in a 12 team 18 round season.)
The other thing Collingwood weren't in 1929 was "minor premiers".

League Preliminary Final.
By OLD BOY

On Saturday last at the Melbourne Cricket ground some Geelong enthusiasts were discussing the question, and claimed that the Geelong club should have been acclaimed as "minor premiers". They could not understand why this had not been done, but Mr. E.L. Wilson (the League secretary) on being appealed to said, "It is 25 years since the minor premiership idea was abandoned" ' Several correspondents have written on the subject, and have pointed out that in the country the custom in to use the term "minor premier". This explanation should set to rest all doubt on the subject, us far as the League premiership is concerned.

AFL 2011 Annual Report.

We also congratulate Collingwood on reaching the
Toyota AFL Grand Final for the second successive year and
for winning the Dr Wm. C. McClelland Trophy for finishing
on top of the ladder
after the premiership season
, also for
the second successive year.

No mention of Collingwood being the "minor premiers".

The term is used in other sporting competitions but not the AFL.
"Finishing on top of the ladder" sounds like something of value in a sporting competition, being the "minor" something does not. No wonder the League abandoned it long, long ago.

Todays game between Essendon and Port Adelaide marks the first time Dustin Fletcher (Round 2 03/04/93) plays against a player (Chad Wingard: 29/9/93) born after he made his AFL debut.

9 of the GWS players from last week would also fit that category. Might rack up about 20 by year's end.

The two SA teams combined have won in Geelong just 5 times (from 26 matches).

At the conclusion of this season, Gold Coast and the Western Bulldogs will be the only two teams that have never played in western Sydney (ANZ Stadium, Blacktown, Skoda Stadium).

In their first 5 home games, the GWS Giants will play at 4 different grounds: ANZ Stadium, Blacktown Football Ground, Manuka Oval and finally in Round 9, their real home ground, Skoda Stadium.
