Every post helps me verify my records. Keep 'em coming.

Today's obscure record:

1921 is the only season in the League's history where no team had more than 14 more scoring shots than their opponent.

Here's one on a personal level.

It's one I posted in another thread.

In 1991, the year I was born, there were 10 100 point wins.
In 2011, the year I turned 20, there were also 10 100 point wins.
I wonder if lightning can strike thrice when I'm 40 in 2031.

Before 1956, the last player to lead the table with 23 goals or less was Richmond's George Bayliss in 1920.
Just shows the sort of game that has developed over recent years. There is no doubt that teams are afraid to try to attack all-out when scoring at a moderate level is possible with steadier methods, whilst more professionalism in defences is sure to eat away at trying to keep scores at the level they were even in 1999. That is why it is easy for me to see a return in the future to scores as low as found circa 1919, which may actually attract the population because low-scoring games can be so exciting.

Maybe, but Pavlich, Franklin and Jack Riewoldt are the only 3 players to debut in the last 15 years who might reach 600 career goals.

Umm, what? Fev? Would have kicked a heap more if he wasn't a head-case too.

Milne could easily get there if he plays 2-3 more years (not hugely unlikely).
Brown would have got there if he wasn't injured - still could if he gets back to form.
Jnr. might give it a shake if he plays forward for a few years in a row.

Given only 27 players in history have done it I don't think we should expect to see a player who can do it every year.

Not sure how I missed Fev. Re Milne, Brown and Riewoldt, I may have been a tad hasty to write them off, although I'm not sure how long Milne and Riewoldt have left. Ablett Jnr most definitely won't get there.

With all that said, it is undeniable that goalkicking is harder than it has been for a long, long time. In the last 13 seasons, Buddy in 2008 is the only player to win the Coleman Medal with 100 or more goals. The last time that happened was 1956-68.

Observed in Round 8 2012:

  • Of teams that have played more than 30 matches at Docklands Stadium
only Fremantle have lost a higher percentage of matches there than
    Carlton.
  • Only 1 of 4 Grand Final rematches where both teams were placed below
    6th on the ladder.
  • Port Adelaide's best last quarter comeback.
  • First time Hawthorn has defeated Fremantle by 50 points in consecutive
    matches.
  • Sydney/SM's best start to a season since 1952.
  • Gold Coast's total attendances pass 600,000.
  • Essendon score their 201,000th point.
  • Brisbane's 4 win from their last 5 wins against a team placed 16th.
  • Adelaide's best start to a season.
  • St Kilda's 1,333rd loss.

Gold Coast lost their last 7 games of 2011 and now the first 8 of 2012.

I don't think they can beat Port (Metricon) or Brisbane (Metricon) so I predict they will lose the next 9 games. Then they play Melbourne (MCG) and GWS (Metricon). So I'm predicting Gold Coast to stretch the losing streak to 24 or 25. That would be the 10th longest losing streak in VFL/AFL history.

http://stats.rleague.com/afl/teams/allteams/streaks.html#08

But Gold Coast's record at their home stadium, Metricon Stadium (Carrara), is 0-11.

Surely they won't lose to GWS up there. Otherwise 0-22 for 29 losses makes it the =5th longest losing streak.

Melbourne, Richmond and West Coast are the only 3 sides to not play Gold Coast at Carrara in 2011 or 2012. However, each of these sides have played at Carrara in the last 4 years.

Code:
2009-R14 Richmond v Adelaide (Carrara)
2009-R10 St Kilda v Melbourne (Carrara)
2009-R03 Melbourne v Adelaide (Carrara)
2008-R08 North Melbourne v West Coast (Carrara)

Taylor Walker held his lead in the Coleman, despite not playing this week. 23 is the equal lowest tally for a leading goalkicker at Round 8 since 1918.

Given that he's out again this week, and leads the Coleman by 2 from Hawkins and 3 from Buddy and Crameri, how about the following numbers after Round 9?

23 - lowest since ....
24 - lowest since ....
25 - lowest since ....
26 - lowest since ....
27 - lowest since ....

23 - lowest since 1918 (22)
24 - lowest since 1956 (24), 1918 (22)
25 - lowest since 1956 (24)
26 - lowest since 1961 (26), 1956 (24)
27 - lowest since 2002, 1965 (30)

Looks like Dustin Fletcher will be missing Essendon's game against GWS; which is a shame for statistical buffs because it would have made him the only player ever to have played a game against both Fitzroy and GWS. Hopefully he plays on in 2013 to get another crack at the Giants!

He and Barry Hall are the only two who played games against both Fitzroy and Gold Coast.
