Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

West Coast's loss to Richmond last night marks a significant "achievement" for them.

In Round 21, 2007, West Coast defeated St Kilda at Docklands. However, since then, they have lost 17 consecutive games on the road. If they don't defeat Melbourne at the MCG in Round 14, West Coast are likely to extend that run to 21 with games to come away to Port, the Bulldogs and Adelaide.

The significant "achievement" is that West Coast have now lost their last away game to every team. They even lost their last "away" game to Fremantle. Such a poor run makes it hard to win consecutive games, and they have not achieved that since Round 22, 2007.

Geelong's last 57 games:

15W - L - 12W - L - 15W - L - 12W

Geelong's last 75 games are as below. After each game this year, you can drop off one result from the bottom of the list. Each win at the top that replaces a loss at the bottom improves Geelong's 75 game sequence. If Geelong defeats Port this weekend, they will move to 2nd on the list at 64-10-1

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

One of my personal favourites(that i think i discovered) is that Melbourne & Richmond have NOT played in the same finals series since 1941. So that is 68 seasons including this year that they have not both made the finals.
For the record, they also have only played of in 2 finals, both in 1940 including the decider. That is in 101 seasons since the tigers inception.

Along a similar trend, Collingwood and Hawthorn have not played each other in a final since 1974.

The weirder fact that is there have only been five years (95, 97, 98, 04, 05) where neither team haven't made the finals. Considering the amount of Grand Finals that the Hawks have played (and won) and the Pies have played (and lost) its quite strange.

Also, in 1984, there wasnt a finals game played without Collingwood or Hawks in it, but they still never played each other.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Since the Final 8 system came in in 1994:

- 1st and 2nd have played off against each other in the Grand Final 6 out of 15 times; this is the most common match-off (2nd vs. 3rd is next; this has occurred twice).

- Of those six meetings, 1st has won three times, and 2nd has won three times.

- At least one of the top two sides each year has played in the Grand Final.

- 1st has missed out on the Grand Final four times - Essendon (1999), Port Adelaide twice (2002-03) and Adelaide (2005); 1st only missed out once under the old final 8 format (Essendon in '99). 2nd has missed 5 times, the last time was in 2000 (the first year of the current Final 8 system format).
(This statistic would point to the increased benefits to the rest of the top 4 once the Final 8 system was changed.)

- 1st has won the Grand Final 6 out of 15 times, 2nd has won 5 times, 3rd has won twice, and 4th and 5th have won once each - both of those were Adelaide's premierships in 1997-98 respectively, both against teams who finished 1st.

Edit thanks to red+black

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Since the Final 8 system came in in 1994:

- 1st has missed out on the Grand Final four times - Port Adelaide twice (2002-03) and Adelaide twice (2005-06); both Adelaide teams and both did this back-to-back (1st never missed out from 1994 until 2000, when the current format of the Final 8 system was introduced).

NQR, bolded bits are wrong.

Adelaide were not minor premiers in 2006, West Coast were, and they made the Grand Final.

Essendon in 1999 were minor premiers and missed the grand final.

:o
Thanks! Shall edit for accuracy.

Also thought I'd post another 5 stats specific to the current Final 8 format (hopefully accurately this time!).

So, since 2000 inclusive:

- 2nd has made every Grand Final except 2000 and 2006; or, to put it another way, 2nd has made the Grand Final in seven of the last eight years.

- 1st has made the Grand Final six times, 2nd as mentioned has made it seven times, 3rd has made it four times, and 4th has made it once.

- 1st has won the Grand Final four times, 2nd three times and 3rd twice.

- ...and from that, obviously no-one has made the Grand Final from outside the top 4.

- 1st and 2nd have played off against each other in the Grand Final four times (the most common match-up), with two wins apiece

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Thought I'd check the records for the SA and WA teams at home.

Football Park - consecutive wins
11 - Port Adelaide
9 - Adelaide

Subiaco - consecutive wins
20 - West Coast
9 - Fremantle

West Coast's consecutive wins streak at Subiaco came to an end against Adelaide in round 22, 2005.
Incidently West Coast were 1st on the ladder and Adelaide were 2nd, and that loss surrendered the minor premiership to the Crows on percentage.

The Eagles got their revenge at the same venue when the teams faced off in a preliminary final just a few weeks later.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

This one is from memory but I'm pretty sure that it's correct.

Troy Broadbridge is in the elite group of players to kick a point with their first kick in AFL (from only about 25 metres out directly in front), only to have the umpire give him a 50m penalty and then kick a goal from the goalline. I'm not sure if he got the point too. It was against Essendon I think.

Observations:
- scheduling Carlton v Collingwood at Princes Park in 2000 was ridiculous, but even more absurd given that they hadn't played there since 1982
- the Essendon v Hawthorn rivalry of the mid 80s saw Hawthorn as the first Victorian club to have all Windy Hill games relocated
- the dates arguably show that Collingwood v Carlton was the first matchup that needed to be permanently moved away from the smaller grounds
- Richmond are likely to continue being the only "big 4" club to have games scheduled at Kardinia Park (the others haven't played there for 10-15 years)

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

There have been 57 H&A matches since Round 1, 2007. Since then, how many times has Fremantle been better than 11th at the end of the round?

Just once.

In that same period on time, how many times has Melbourne been better than 13th at the end of the round?

Not once.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Last night Essendon won by 69 points. Today Collingwood kicked 169 points, Sydney kicked 69 points. Immature joke not included. ;)

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Last time a premiership team has missed finals the following year: 1999 (Adelaide).

Hawthorn look likely to do likewise.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Just looking at allthestats.com just now, and Geelong's run of 57 wins and 6 losses since 2007 has moved their overall win/loss percentage from 52.15% at the end of 2006, to 53.25% now. Given we are talking well over 2000 games, to move a number like that by 1.1% in that time is quite remarkable.

Collingwood had a remarkable early record, having achieved almost 70% win percentage at the 3nd of 1936, and was still over 65% at the end of 1981. Since then though, their overall mark has reduced to 60.88%. Still, that's huge, on average winning three games for every two defeats in over 100 years of footy.

The Demons since the start of 2007 have won nine games, and indeed have only PLAYED as many matches as Geelong has WON in that time!!

Comparing Geelong and Melbourne in recent times is not pretty. Since the start of 2007:

Code:

[B]Geelong[/B] 63 57 6
[B]Melbourne[/B] 57 9 48

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Nick Dal Santo has more hitouts this year than Justin Koschitzke.

Lenny Hayes has more than both of them combined.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

I know we shouldn't get carried away but how is this...

Whoever loses this match on Sunday between Geelong and St. Kilda, could very well go on to win the premiership!

For the past seven seasons, the premiers have actually lost to the runners-up in their last match played against each other.

2008 - Geelong def Hawthorn in R17
2007 - Port Adelaide def Geelong in R21
2006 - Sydney def West Coast in the QF
2005 - West Coast def Sydney in the QF
2004 - Brisbane def Port Adelaide in R11
2003 - Collingwood def Brisbane in QF
2002 - Collingwood def Brisbane in R8

With the strong possibility of a Geelong and St. Kilda Grand Final, maybe it would be worth dropping the four points this week!

Only three clubs have never had a player play past his 34th birthday;

University (oldest was Tom Fogarty in 1909, 31y 55d)
Port Adelaide (oldest was Daryl Wakelin in 2007, 33y, 49d)
West Coast (oldest was Chris Mainwaring in 1999, 33y 210d)

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Fremantle?

Players who spend their career playing in WA don't go far into their thirties because the travel effects them. It's why Cousins will struggle beyond next year.

Shane Parker and Dale Kickett both played after they turned 34.

Yeah.
I was thinking of that stat as well, quiet strange to see a team who loses, will go on and win the premiership. It is such a strange pattern.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

St Kilda are 14-0.

Only 3 times have St Kilda won more than 14 H&A games in a season, their best ever being 16.

Each of those times St Kilda won 17 matches for the year, including finals.

St Kilda have never won 3 finals in the same year.

St Kilda have been Minor Premiers twice. Both times they lost in the Grand Final.

St Kilda have won 16 straight matches at Docklands. Until yesterday, Geelong had won their last 13 there.
