Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Adelaide are now 4-0 at Gold Coast Stadium.

Adelaide have played 4 different opponents at Gold Coast Stadium.

Adelaide's four scores there are 110, 102, 102 and 100.

Port Adelaide have never played at Gold Coast Stadium.

Fremantle, like Adelaide, are undefeated at Gold Coast Stadium. Yet they have never won at the Gabba.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

28 players have kicked 100 or more goals in a season a total of 57 times.

Of those 57 times, only 8 times have been acheived by a player who didn't have at least one game where he kicked 10 or more goals;

Gary Ablett (1995) - 122
Lance Franklin (2008) - 113
Matthew Lloyd (2000) - 109
Larry Donohue (1976) - 105
Malcolm Blight (1982) - 103
Warwick Capper (1987) - 103
Doug Wade (1974) - 103
Jack Titus (1940) - 100

In 1974, when Doug Wade kicked 103 goals, the most he scored in a match was 8 Goals. This is the lowest season-high score of all century goalkickers and the only time this has occurred.

So from this we can gather that history has shown all full-forwards that unless they kick at least 8 goals in a game during some point of the season, they won't be able to crack the 100 goal mark.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

And both times we lost the Grand Final to the team that finished 4th (Essendon in '65 and Adelaide in '97)...
:D and after going through a ladder predictor that will be Adelaide

Wait, I had Geelong regaining 1st.

So you wont get lose to 4th

(BTW in the ladder predictor and finals predictor I have St Kilda (2nd) d Bulldogs (3rd) in the grand final)

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Sydney's Grand Final win was actually their first victory on the MCG in a final for over 60 years!

You mean 8 days. :p We beat St Kilda at the MCG in the Prelim the week before.

But yup, was probably 60 odd years prior to that. :(

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Congratulations to St Kilda winning their 18th game of the season, something they have never done before.

Another thing St Kilda has never done before is win 3 finals, which they will need to do to win the flag.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Jade Rawlings is Richmond's caretaker coach for 11 games. How will he do? How will he compare to other short-lived coaches?

69 men have coached between 10 and 22 games.
- 1 has achieved a win rate of 80% or greater

Who was this man, and why wasn't his contracted extended!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_Clymo

http://www.gfc.com.au/1931/tabid/9380/default.aspx

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Coghlan

Much like Alan Joyce in 1988, it looks like Charlie Clymo filled in for a season in place of Arthur Coghlan. I don't know why. Coghlan was captain-coach in 1929-30, making the grand final in 1930, albeit losing to Collingwood (their 4th on the trot). Perhaps he or the club thought it best he step down, and he did, from both posts. Rover Ted Baker became captain in 1931, while Charlie Clymo became coach, and Geelong won their 2nd premiership*.

Rumour is that Clymo was not an entirely popular fellow and that he was offered more money to go coach in the bush, which I presume he did. Geelong great Reg Hickey took over both captain and coaching roles in 1932, then in 1933, Coghlan who had retired as a player the previous year, resumed the coaching mantle while Hickey continued on as captain.

* Coincidentally, 1931 was the first time the McIntyre finals system was used.

Who was Charlie Clymo?

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

You have to go back 22 years to find the last time a player kicked ten goals or more in a game for the Bulldogs.

10 goals kicked
Simon Beasley: Round 21, 1987 V Brisbane

Off the top of my head:
Adelaide: Modra
Brisbane: Brown
Carlton: Sticks
Collingwood: Sav
Essendon: Lloyd
Fremantle: None
Geelong: Ablett
Hawthorn: Dunstall
North: Carey
Melbourne: Lyon
Richmond: Richo
Port: None
St. Kilda: Lockett
Sydney: Lockett
West Coast: Summich

So there are only two teams who have failed to have a player kick ten goals since the 90s, and they are the two newest teams in the competition.

Going back 22 years is a hell of a long time to find the last player to score ten goals for a team in one match. I'm hoping Freo can continue to keep this streak alive in and go past this record in eight more years :thumbsu:

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Tony Modra kicked 10.2 for Freo vs Melbourne in 1999!

Here's the game info.

Others;

Adelaide: Modra
Brisbane: Brown
Carlton: Sticks, SOS
Collingwood: Sav, Daicos
Essendon: Lloyd, Salmon
Fremantle: Modra
Geelong: Ablett, Brownless
Hawthorn: Dunstall, Brereton
North: Carey, Longmire
Melbourne: Lyon, Allen Jakovich
Richmond: Richo, Jeff Hogg
Port: None
St. Kilda: Lockett, Milne
Sydney: Lockett
West Coast: Sumich, Cummings

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Interesting stat I just noticed is that the Shaw brothers are miles ahead of the pack on the number of bounces.
Rhyce has 134 and Heath has 92. The next best is Rodan on 68, and everyone else in the top 10 has 40 - 50.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Five football hard luck stories:

1. Rene Kink played in 4 losing and 1 drawn grand final without ever winning a premiership. The losses were for Collingwood (1977, 1979, 1980, 1981) and Essendon (1983). Kink was an Essendon player in 1984 & 1985 when the Bombers won premierships, but did not play in either game.

2. Derek Kickett played every game for Essendon in 1993, but was dropped from the (winning) Grand Final team. Kickett had previously played in the 1990 Essendon Grand Final team that was thrashed by Collingwood, and after leaving the Bombers played in Sydney's losing 1996 team. While playing in the WAFL in 1987, Kickett had topped the Sandover Medal poll by a huge margin, but missed out due to suspension.

3. Greg Tate played at Essendon in 1947-51, a very successful era for the Bombers. But while Tate played in the beaten 1947, 1948 & 1951 GF teams, he missed out on the 1949 & 1950 flags, getting injured in 1950 after playing every game of the season to this point!

4. Frank Tuck was a Collingwood player in the 1950s. He played in the beaten 1952, 1955 & 1956 Magpie GF teams, but missed out on the two Collingwood Premiership teams of this era - suspended in 1953 & injured in 1958.

5. Jeff Hogg & Darren Holmes were two talented players who certainly had no problems with missing Grand Finals. Hogg played 200 games for Richmond (1986-93) & Fitzroy (1994-96), all in bottom four teams, with four wooden spoons and two second last positions. Holmes played in five successive wooden spoon teams with Sydney (1992, 93, 94) & Fitzroy (1995, 96). Teamates at Fitzroy as the Lions struggled through their last days prior to the merger, their previous teams improved and climbed out of the bottom rungs of the ladder, while Fitzroy went from a competetive mid ladder team to a chopping block. An even more amazing coincidence further links their careers; in the Round 9 1992 match between Richmond & Sydney, Hogg and Holmes had an accidental collision, which saw both men stretchered from the MCG, with this game starting off a 26 game losing streak for the Swans! But it was an encounter with an entirely different type of hog that earned Holmes lasting fame - he was the player who caught a pig released onto the SCG in a Round 18 1993 match between Sydney and St Kilda!

Shouldn't that be 5 losing Grand Finals and a draw

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

77 was a draw and a loss, draw the first game came back the week after lost the replay.

And as such:

1977 (draw), 1977 (loss), 1979 (loss), 1980 (loss), 1981 (loss), 1983 (loss)

As Blood said, 5 losing Grand Finals and a draw

Yeh...aside from the week before against St Kilda...

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Collingwood hasn't beaten a Victorian team in a final since 1990.

Hawthorn v Fitzroy in 1991 sets the record for cumulative margin (126+157=283) and score (231+195=426).

Adelaide is the only unbeaten team in Grand Finals.

Hawthorn has easily the best strike rate of converting finals series appearances into premierships (10 from 27) of the original 12 clubs.

1994 finals series had 3 matches decided after the final siren. Ablett & Brownless both kicked after the siren goals, and Hawthorn v North went extra time.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Melbourne had a 10 goal win today against Fremantle.

Number of 10 goals wins by Melbourne since 2000: 3.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

With Essendon halting St Kilda's streak to 19 wins, slotting between Essendon's 20-0 in 2000 and Collingwood's 18-0 in 1929, how about those teams that always struggle to start the season off well:

- Adelaide's best start to a season: 4-0
- Port Adelaide's best start to a season: 3-0
- Fremantle's best start to a season: 2-0

And it's the non-Victorian clubs (together with Essendon and Carlton) that never start the season too badly:

- Port Adelaide's worst start to a season: 0-4
- West Coast's worst start to a season: 0-4
- Essendon's worst start to a season: 0-5
- Carlton's worst start to a season: 0-5
- Adelaide's worst start to a season: 0-5

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Geelong is the only football club to have 3 coaches coach 100 games or more in a row.

Malcolm Blight 145
Gary Ayres 116
Mark Thompson 231

The next closest was Melbourne who had Balme fall 2 games short on 98.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Premierships won by teams in years read normally and backwards:

Collingwood ('03, '30)
Carlton ('07, '70)
Essendon ('24, '42)
Geelong ('25, '52)
Collingwood ('35, '53)

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

If you are into omen tipping then here's a couple for finals week 1.

- in their last 6 finals appearances Essendon has won in week 1 each time (defeated SYD 1999, NM 2000, RICH 2001, WC 2002, FREO 2003, MELB 2004). The last 3 instances saw them lose in week 2 each time.

- in the previous 4 seasons where Geelong have beaten the Bulldogs during the finals they went on to LOSE that year's Grand Final (1992 QF & PF, 1994 QF, 1995 QF, 2008 PF). The cats have a 6 match finals winning streak over the dogs having also won the 1976 Elimination Final.

- Dustin Fletcher is the sole survivor from the most recent Essendon vs Adelaide finals meeting (1993 PF)

- 3 listed Lions played the last time they met Carlton at the Gabba in a final, a venue where no away side has been triumphant in finals (Black, Power, Notting were the players. Brisbane beat ESS/CARL 1996, CARL/WB 1999, WB 2000, PORT/RICH 2001, ADEL/PORT 2002, ADEL 2003, ST.K 2004)
