Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Random stat: Has a team won the flag with one/two draws for the year? This doesn't include finals draws :P

This answer is YES…

Could Collingwood do it this year?
A more noteworthy point is that Collingwood, currently atop the ladder, would if they win the premiership become the first premier since Carlton in 1995 to have kicked four or fewer goals in a match. The Magpies kicked 4.17 (41) against St. Kilda early in the year at Docklands. If we exclude the very low-scoring years before 1919, a full list of premiers scoring four or fewer goals in a match (scores where the eventual premier won with a score of four or fewer goals are italicised) is:

  • Richmond in 1920:
    • 3.8 (26) v Carlton
    • 4.6 (30) v Carlton in Second Semi-Final
  • Fitzroy in 1922:
    • 3.14 (32) v Richmond
  • Essendon in 1923:
    • 1.12 (18) v St. Kilda
  • Collingwood in 1927:
    • 3.13 (31) v Essendon
    • 2.13 (25) v Richmond in Grand Final
  • Geelong in 1931:
    • 4.19 (43) v Collingwood
    • 3.10 (28) v Carlton
  • Richmond in 1934:
    • 4.9 (33) v Geelong
  • Essendon in 1942:
    • 4.15 (39) v St. Kilda
  • Geelong in 1951:
    • 3.11 (29) v Collingwood
  • Melbourne in 1957:
    • 4.9 (33) v Hawthorn
  • Collingwood in 1958:
    • 4.9 (33) v Melbourne in Second Semi Final
  • Melbourne in 1960:
    • 2.7 (19) v Collingwood
  • Geelong in 1963:
    • 4.11 (35) v Melbourne
    • 3.13 (31) v Fitzroy
  • Melbourne in 1964:
    • 4.14 (38) v Footscray
  • Carlton in 1968:
    • 1.11 (17) v Essendon
  • Carlton in 1970:
    • 2.12 (24) v Collingwood
  • Essendon in 1984:
    • 4.10 (34) v Footscray
  • West Coast in 1992:
    • 3.11 (29) v St. Kilda
    • 3.5 (23) v Footscray
  • Carlton in 1995:
    • 3.6 (24) v St. Kilda

Round 19 2010 - Trivia

1) Since 2006, Essendon has conceded more centuries than any other team - 71 (65.74% of their matches.) Geelong in the same period has conceded the least - 21 or 18.26% of matches played.
2) 4th time Sydney/SM has been 40 or more pts ahead at 1/2 time compared to once in 2009 and 2008. Most: 5 in 1987.
3) 70 pts. Brisbane's lowest winning score v West Coast.
4) 3.13: The fewest goals with the most behinds scored in the last quarter of a Collingwood v Geelong match since 1.12-18 round 10, 1917.
5) St Kilda's quarter tally was increased in each subsequent quarter by 2 to 5 pts. This is the first win St Kilda has done this in a match and the only 24th time a winning team has done this. St Kilda's winning margin of 94 pts. is the highest by a team doing this.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

3) 70 pts. Brisbane's lowest winning score v West Coast
Things I noticed on your site that are not even listed there:

  1. Brisbane’s win is the first winning only the second quarter for just over two years - since Western Bulldogs against Sydney in Round 18 of 2008
  2. Brisbane’s score is the lowest in a home-and-away game by a team winning only the second quarter and the match since the twelfth round of 1965, when South Melbourne scored 8.8 (56) to North Melbourne’s 6.17 (53)
  3. The game is the first Round 19 match won by winning only the second quarter
Two more noteworthy facts that are related to this occurrence and which I just found out:
  1. The last season where no match was won winning only one quarter was 1951
  2. Previous seasons where no match was won winning only one quarter were 1946, 1918, 1910, 1907, 1906, 1905, 1903, 1902, 1899 and 1897

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

A common trivia question is which team won the wooden spoon and premiership in the same year. Well the Bendigo Pioneers will soon have a chance to emulate Fitzroy of 1916. The TAC Cup has 13 teams and this year introduced a finals system comprising the top 12 teams, except 12th placed Greater Western Sydney have announced that they won't compete in the finals. Thus, last placed Bendigo will (probably) win the wooden spoon yet will also play in finals for a chance to win this year's TAC Cup.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Sorry if these have been posted. But these come to mind.

The 2 umpire system was introduced in 1976

The out of bounds on the full rule started in 1969

The VFL first tried a diamond in the middle of the ground instead of a square for the 1974 season. For obvious reasons this was then changed to a square.

The North Melbourne football club was once known as Hotham.

Fitzroy were called the Gorillas from 1938 - 1956

Before the Brownlow Medal the award for the best player was called Champion of the Colony ( 1897 - 1902 ) and then called Champion of the Season ( 1902 - 1924 )

The 1st 2 seasons of the VFL consisted of 20 playes on the field and from 1899 onwards there have been 18 only on the field.

By the end of the 1922 season Fitzroy had the most premierships in the competition ( 7 ) this was then overtaken by Collingwood when they won there 8th in the 1928 season. The poor Lions would only win 1 more :(

North Melbourne was the 1st of the three new teams to come into the comp in 1925 to reach a Grand Final ( 1950 vs Ess ) Yet was the last to win a flag.
Footscray 1954 and Hawthorn 1961 beat them to it.

Fitzroy managed to win 5 Brownlow medals from 1931 - 1936 ( Bunton, Smallhorn, Ryan ) yet never made the finals in any of these years.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

  1. 2004 was both
    1. the last season without a draw
    2. the last season with no match where scores were level at three-quarter time
  2. In 1914 there were four draws but no match with level scores at three-quarter time
  3. The biggest final winning margin with scores level at three-quarter time is 57 points by Hawthorn against Sydney in early 1993. The Hawks kicked 10.4 (64) to 0.7 (7) in the last quarter after both teams were 12.13 (85) at the final break.
  4. Carlton in 1929 and 1954, Geelong in 1965 and North Melbourne in 2001 are the only teams since 1919 to have both the highest losing score and the lowest winning score of a season.
  5. In 1952, Essendon lost two games in which they kicked the most goals of any team that round (versus Melbourne in Round 9 and Collingwood in Round 15). Only three other matches have both provided the two highest score of a round and been won with fewer goals:
      • It’s amazing how:
        1. all five cases involve either Essendon or South Melbourne
        2. four of the five occurred in five years in the 1950s with no occurrence in 55 years since

Round 20 – 2010 – Trivia:

1) 163 pts: Collingwood's greatest combined margin over Essendon in one season. Previous: 147 pts. 1971.

2) First time Carlton has scored 9 or more goals in the last quarter of consecutive matches.

3) Geelong's 8th win in all 4 quarters this season, their most in 1 season. Previous: 7 in 1989, 2007, 2008.

4) West Coast's 53rd loss from their last 75 matches, giving them their worst result from 75 consecutive matches.

5) Brisbane v Adelaide: Adelaide scored their 400th goal and 400th behind v Brisbane in this match. Brisbane scored their 400th behind v Adelaide.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Some trivia from the early years...

Ted Lockwood (Co) & Arthur Pincott (Ge) were opponents for the day in R6, 1903, with neither getting a kick for the entire match.

Following a goal umpire's decision to award a behind instead of a goal to Melbourne against South Melbourne, umpire (and former Collingwood player) Lardie Tulloch took matters into his own hands and restarted play by bouncing the ball in the centre as a personal protest at the decision in R11, 1906. Tulloch umpired the following year's Grand Final.

Nine Footscray players became lost on their way to the Brunswick ground for a VFA match in 1897. Despite the head trainer and eight supporters taking the field in their stead until the players arrived, Footscray won by 47 points.

Carlton players sported a Union Jack on the backs of their jumpers in the Queen's Birthday match against St.Kilda in R4, 1900.

Fitzroy winger George Holden took ten bounces in eluding six South Melbourne opponents, R7 1913.

Essendon winger Cyril Gove rode Menthe into third place in a hurdle at Moonee Valley shortly before being one of their best players against South Melbourne, R6 1915.

May 17, 1930 (R3) - Bob Johnson snr kicked the winning goal for Melbourne v Fitzroy; Les Johnson kicked the winning goal for Essendon v Richmond; Maurie Johnson kicked the winning goal for Carlton v Hawthorn.

Collingwood's Alan Ryan, when shooting from 35m after the final siren amidst hundreds of supporters who'd invaded the ground, nailed the goal to tie the match despite having to kick over a police horse which reared in front of him.

Baseball was played as a curtain-raiser to all VFL matches for many years until shortly after WW2.

In 1977, field umpires were paid $105 per match, boundary umpires $47, and goal umpires $33.

1. LOL AT THE JOHNSONS!
2. It was Collingwood's first draw that year, and the second draw also came from an after siren goal (The other player was Ron Baggott)

Re: Most goals against ladder leader

Interesting list. Most of the games will be very familiar, but I did nto expect it that McKenna would stand out do firmly.

People will remember the Wayne Carey game well, and Gavin Exell’s two-week honeymoon during which Geelong supporters saw 102 goals kicked in two successive games is another standout.

Lockett’s case against Brisbane I had never thought of. The Bears had come of age late in 1995, but I never realised they were on top via big wins over Footscray, Fitzroy and Hawthorn at that point. Yet, when they met Sydney, Lockett kicked eleven goals and the Swans won very easily.

Yep I double-checked that one. Also Melbourne on top in 1971 and Essendon in '72.

Surprising, both of these. The Crows had lost narrowly to Collingwood in the seventh last game ever played at Victoria Park, but I had thought their healthy percentage would have kept them higher even with only two wins at that point.

The only team Ben McEvoy has played in a losing side against is Essendon.

I love the fact that he took it into his own hands against Hawthorn to keep it that way :thumbsu:

Round 21 2010 – Trivia

1) Geelong's club record of matches won in all 4 quarters in a season extended to 9. (Which is now only 2nd to Brisbane's league record of 10 in 2002.)

2) Only the 3rd time Hawthorn has won both the 2nd and 3rd quarters in a match by 6 goals or more. Previous: 41 and 55 pts. round 20, 1992 v Essendon. 38 and 55 pts, round 3, 1982 v WB/Footscray.

3)
First time Collingwood has played 11 matches without a loss since 1965.

4) St Kilda and Richmond has each won 49 of their last 100 matches against each other with 2 drawn. (Richmond won 53 of the prior 73.)

5) Brisbane's 14th consecutive match failing to score a century - a new club record.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Tony McGuinness had 10 or more possessions in his first 121 matches.

Only 4 times during his 222-game career did he not have 10 possessions or more, meaning in only 1.8% of his games did he not get 10 touches. This figure is better than both Robert Harvey and Greg Williams.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Factor in Le Cras' performance for WC this year, and it's a strange looking goalkicking leaderboard at the top in 2010.

Two of the three from the bottom two teams. Surely this has to be a first?

1956 H&A season
Bill Young (St, 11th/12) 1st
Jock Spencer (NM, 12th/12) 3rd

Spencer was overtaken by three players during the finals.

Also happened in 1916, but there were only four clubs that year.
