Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

1) University had a higher match/win ratio from their first 100 matches in the League than did five current AFL sides in their first 100 in the League.

2) Collingwood won 68% of their first 100 matches and have won 65% of their last 100.

3) Richmond won 33.5% of their first 100 and have won 32.5% of their last 100.

4) Between 1969 and 1993 the original 12 VFL clubs bettered their previous high scores on 40 occasions. Since then none have

5)
Carlton's current high score is the longest standing, having been not bettered since 1969 in 979 matches.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

No wonder Carlton won the Grand Final with less goals :S
It’s not only that: in their first clash of the year, played in a hurricane force wind on Anzac Day at Princes Park, the score-line was:
Code:
[COLOR="Navy"]Carlton    0-6 (6)    0-7 (7)    1-10 (16)    1-11 (17)[/COLOR]
Essendon 0-1 (1) 0-5 (5) 3-6 (24) 7-8 (50)
That is, Essendon won by five and a half goals with only three more scoring shots, in conditions that the players thought were worse than even the wettest days of Easter and early August 1965, even though it was a very warm 23.3˚C and extremely dry from the drought of 1967. That year, Melbourne had only 332 millimetres (half the 1885 to 1996 average), Robinvale only 76 millimetres (a record low for Victoria) and Yunta on the Barrier Highway only 51. In fact, the dryness of the ground made goals harder to get because there was no mud to nullify the effect of the gale force wind across the ground and make it easier to provide force to kick the ball upwind. At half time - when the scoreboard showed the first goalless first half since 1899 - people were betting on whether a goal would be kicked at all! It was the ten-minute mark of the third quarter when Ken Fraser finally put the ball through the big sticks, and observers were surprised at how easily Essendon kicked their seven goals in the second half against one at the 23 minute mark of the third quarter by little-known forward Peter Smith for Carlton.

Interesting observation about the dry ground exacerbating the effect of the wind. Maybe Essendon put the ball in a bucket of water at half time?

The other freakish thing about this match and the only other three in VFL/AFL history where no goals were scored in the first half, is that they all involved Essendon!

The round robin final v Melbourne 1897.
Round 3 1899 v Sth Melbourne
Round 3 1968 v Carlton
Round 17 1984 v Footscray

Essendon won all of them.

(Peter Smith who kicked Carlton's one goal in 1968 was the son of Norm Smith.)

Of the 107 lowest post-1919 scores of 26 points or less, thirty have occurred since 1965 (in roughly half the seasons since 1919). If we do not restrict ourselves to post-1919 scores, there have been the following periods in which none of the 100 lowest scores have occurred:
  1. 1928 to 1952
  2. 1966 to 1988
  3. 1990 to 2008

I’ve always known how Collingwood never had any of the highest scores kicked against it. Carlton’s 1943 record proved very durable indeed, only being beaten by Fremantle in 2005, by which time a defensive, Docklands-adapted style of play and shorter, TV-adapted quarters meant that, though Collingwood’s 2005 season would in reality rank probably as its second- or third-worst ever (I haven’t assessed it totally, but that it what my imagination tells me). On paper, the one big chance to break the 1943 record occurred in 1987, but there Collingwood’s poor form was not due to its defence, but the lack of forwards to back up Brian Taylor in so many games.

Century Scores

1) The last of Geelong's opponents to score a century at Kardinia Park was Port Adelaide - 15.11-101 in round 21 of 2007.

2) Collingwood last scored a century against Sydney in Sydney round 4 2000. Richmond round 6 2000 and St Kilda round 19 1998.

3) Since 1997 WB/Footscray have been the only team to score a century in more than half their matches.

4) Since 1997 Adelaide, Geelong and Sydney/SM are the only teams to have conceded centuries in less than one third of their matches.

5) No team has conceded a century in every match of a season. Carlton: 2007 - 21/22 conceded (1 score of 98 against) and Sydney/SM: 1993 - 19/20 conceded (1 score of 94 against) came closest.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Last night's Richmond team (average age 22.53) was the youngest in an opening round since 1993.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Just like when Brisbane were playing Footscray last year, I thought for a time we might see the first win with two fewer goals of the twenty-first century in last night’s game between Carlton and Richmond. Sadly from a statistical perspective, we did not, and so the Round 12, 1999 game between North and Melbourne remains my biggest priority purchase post-1997.

There have been ten wins with fewer goals on an opening round since 1897, though in 1931 and 1943 there were two wins with fewer goals on opening day. In the latter case Collingwood achieved the amazing feat of beating North Melbourne with a goal tally only one greater than the lowest goal tally all season, rivalled only by Melbourne against Footscray in the very wet Round 9 of 1935. (I’ve not checked how often a team has won with the lowest goal tally of a round, but it’s certainly happened more than in those two case). Round 1, 1943 is also notable because Hawthorn’s win over St. Kilda preceded the longest streak without winning with fewer goals of over 500 games until Round 9 of 1972.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

It took my attention when watching last night's season opener between Carlton and Richmond that both the previous season's Leading Goalkicker Medallist (Jack Riewoldt) and Brownlow Medallist (Chris Judd) were playing against each other. Naturally, I then had to check how many other times this had taken place during the opening round.

Season Game . . . . . . . .Brownlow, Goalkicker
1932 Fitzroy vs Carlton . .Haydn Bunton, Soapy Vallence
1937 St.Kilda vs Fitzroy . Dinny Ryan, Bill Mohr
1956 South Melb vs Geelong Fred Goldsmith, Noel Rayson
1964 South Melb vs Hawthorn Bob Skilton, John Peck
1965 Hawthorn vs Carlton . Gordon Collis, John Peck
1985 Melbourne vs Fitzroy .Peter Moore, Bernie Quinlan
1987 Collingwood vs Sydney Greg Williams, Brian Taylor
1990 Hawthorn vs Geelong . Paul Couch, Jason Dunstall
2006 West Coast vs St.Kilda Ben Cousins, Fraser Gehrig

The only other time this could have occurred was in the opening round of 1941 between Collingwood and Richmond, when Des Fothergill was one of the Brownlow Medallists and Jack Titus the Leading Goalkicker, but Fothergill did not line up for Collingwood.

On/Off Target

1) 1997-2010
St Kilda has scored twice as many goals in a match as behinds on 50 occasions - Collingwood 22

2) 1997-2010
Hawthorn and WB/Footscray
has scored twice as many behinds in a match as goals on 6 occasions - Adelaide 19.

3) Round 3 2010
Collingwood 4.17-41 v St Kilda 10.9-69

Collingwood's score was the worst inaccuracy by an eventual Premier since Carlton's 2.12-24 v Collingwood 13.23-101 round 19, 1970. Collingwood was also the first eventual Premier to be goalless in a 2nd half since Collingwood scored 0.4-4 after half time v WB/Footscray in round 7 1953.

4) Best improvement in goal/behind ratio in 2010 after half time:
Round 13: Carlton 62.6% - 2.12 first half - 10.3 second half

5) Worst decrease in goal/behind ratio in 2010 after half time:
Round 21: Richmond 60.1% - 10.1 in first half - 4.9 second half

Too Long at the Top?

Bomber fans are excited about being on top of the progressive ladder after a completed round for the first time since 2002.

But being on top is not always the best.

1) Premierships won by team on top of ladder the most during the season - 49 (42.98%)
2) Premierships won by team not on top of ladder the most - 62 (54.39%) *
3) Number of teams that were on top of the ladder less than 33% of the season and were premiers - 49.
4) Number of teams that were on top of the ladder more than 70% of the season but weren't premiers - 21. (Most recent: Geelong 2008 and Essendon 2001)
5) Three teams on top after each completed round won the Premiership and three teams on top after each completed round, didn't.

* 3 have been one by teams equal most on top of the ladder during the season.

At first I thought you meant Collingwood last scored a century against St Kilda in round 19 1998 which is wrong obviously as they scored a hundred points against us twice in the last year alone.

The '9' and the '0' are next to one another on the keyboard. So round 10 1998 came out at 19. Oops!

St Kilda's last century score against Sydney in Sydney was 24.10-154 round 10 1998 at the SCG. (Highest score in 9 matches since for St Kilda v Sydney in Sydney is 13.16-94 R18, 2009)

Collingwood's last century score against Sydney in Sydney was 15.16-106 round 4 2000 at the SCG.

Richmond's last century score against Sydney in Sydney was 17.10-112 round 6 2000 at the SCG.

All other teams have scored a century against Sydney in Sydney more recently.

Hope that is more clear.
