Of the five expansion teams;

Brisbane Bears debuted with 17 players who had previous VFL experience

Did you include Danny Stanley in GC's figure?

Also:

I recall that one player from 1985 had an accident where they spilt battery acid from their car and had to miss the rest of the season. I am not sure what club it was from, but it could have been Hutchinson since I am sure it was a very inexperienced player and he had twelve disposals in that game so Melbourne would have had some reason to persist with him unless he was making way for an injured player’s return.

This begs several questions:

  1. What is a full list of players losing by 100 points or more in every game they played in?
  2. What is the biggest loss in the first game of a player playing 200 or more games?
  3. It’s notable that the eight teams losing by more than 161 points had all lost their previous game except for Essendon against Sydney in 1987 (just an uncharacteristic and amazingly terrible performance as I can verify on DVD) yet four of the other seven had no new players - especially surprising with Melbourne in 1979 as their seconds were strong.
  4. Do you think Wal Heron’s record will ever be broken? What about even Trevor Heath’s since 1900? I cannot see any of the Gold Coast players coming as close as 119 points!
  5. What have been the biggest losses in the game of a one-game player since 1986?

Out of curiousity, how many times has that happened overall, and the 8.11 in the 3rd quarter would be nowhere near a record for either, but what would be most behinds and scoring shots for a quarter?

If memory serves me, South Melbourne had 22 shots in a massive last quarter c. 1919 (17.5 vs St Kilda). As for behinds, I'm tipping Hawthorn again to feature in their match of 25.41...

Table showing how many times each team has scored 25 or more behinds.

Most scoring shots for a quarter: 23
Third quarter round 6, 1929 at the Western Experimental Wind Tunnel Facility.
WB/Footscray 7.16-58 v Hawthorn 0.0-0

16 behinds is the most in one quarter shared by Collingwood - third quarter round 6 1970 at Arden St. Oval - 6.16-52 v Nth Melbourne 1.0-6

Highest score in a quarter Sydney/SM 17-4-106 v St Kilda 0.0-0 last quarter round 12, 1919. (Some of the St Kilda players walked off in disgust before the match finished.)

Hawthorn's 41 behinds is the world record - 6 ahead of Geelong 22.35-167 round 16 1981 v Melbourne 12.7-89

1) North Melbourne (1977-79) and West Coast (2005-07) are the only teams to win their first 5 matches in 3 consecutive seasons,

2)
Geelong 2008-2009 and Melbourne 1955-1956 are the only teams to win their first 8 matches in consecutive seasons.

3)
Melbourne has the most number of seasons where they won the first 8 matches: 5 - 1928,1937,1955,1956,1965

4)
The most teams with 2 wins after 2 rounds was 7 in 1995.

5) The longest Port Adelaide and Fremantle have gone before their first loss in a season has been 3 rounds.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

One of my personal favourites(that i think i discovered) is that Melbourne & Richmond have NOT played in the same finals series since 1941. So that is 68 seasons including this year that they have not both made the finals.
For the record, they also have only played off in 2 finals, both in 1940 including the decider. That is in 101 seasons since the tigers inception. 2 finals. Rivalry:o

This one is still going funnily enough, and with both still holding developing lists and a mere draw from the opening 2 rounds, looks set to hit 70 seasons this year. Staggering.

Also, my other favourite stat of the last few years is still running;

Fremantle, since their inception in 1995, have never finished above the Sydney Swans. If it occurs again in 2011, thats 17 seasons.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

it’s not only that: In their first clash of the year, played in a hurricane force wind on anzac day at princes park, the score-line was:
Code:
[color="navy"]carlton    0-6 (6)    0-7 (7)    1-10 (16)    1-11 (17)[/color]
essendon   0-1 (1)    0-5 (5)    3-6 (24)     7-8 (50)
that is, essendon won by five and a half goals with only three more scoring shots, in conditions that the players thought were worse than even the wettest days of easter and early august 1965, even though it was a very warm 23.3˚c and extremely dry from the drought of 1967. That year, melbourne had only 332 millimetres (half the 1885 to 1996 average), robinvale only 76 millimetres (a record low for victoria) and yunta on the barrier highway only 51. In fact, the dryness of the ground made goals harder to get because there was no mud to nullify the effect of the gale force wind across the ground and make it easier to provide force to kick the ball upwind. At half time - when the scoreboard showed the first goalless first half since 1899 - people were betting on whether a goal would be kicked at all! It was the ten-minute mark of the third quarter when ken fraser finally put the ball through the big sticks, and observers were surprised at how easily essendon kicked their seven goals in the second half against one at the 23 minute mark of the third quarter by little-known forward peter smith for carlton.

dayum!

Over the Border

Since a team has been established in States other than Victoria, of current teams to the end of 2010:

1) Port Adelaide has played a lower percentage of their matches in Victoria than any other team.
2) Adelaide has played a lower percentage of their matches in NSW than any other team.

3) Collingwood has played a lower percentage of their matches in WA than any other team.
4) Fremantle has played a lower percentage of their matches in QLD than any other team.
5) St Kilda has played a lower percentage of their matches in SA than any other team.

In R9, 1980 Richmond beat Melbourne by the following scores;

Seniors - 195 to 102
Reserves - 198 to 87
Under 19's - 145 to 79
http://wiki.fcmelbourne.com.au/Round+9+1980

For a total of 538 to 268 over the three games.

Has any other club ever lost all three grades by such a massive combined margin?

I posted last year's "times tables" earlier in this thread, here's how they're going this year.

These are great. Would be a good feature to add to 2011 Season Scores and Results pages at AFL Tables. Perhaps ranked in order of time ahead?

Could be one of the most valuable guides to form just from figures.

I hope the data you source to compile this makes it a not too tedious task!

I wonder if the brains trust at the Suns are analysing those 46 seconds where they matched it with with Carlton?

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Biggest Win/Loss of the Round

1) Since 1997 the team to have suffered the greatest number of biggest losses of the round in one season is West Coast with 9 in 2001.

2)
The lowest greatest winning margin of the round in an 12 team competition was 12 points, round 4 1926. The other margins were, 11,8,5 (twice) and 2 . points.

3)
The lowest greatest winning margin of the round in an 16 team competition was 26 points, round 2 2005. The other margins were, 23,22,14,6,4,2 points and 1 point.

4)
Eventual winners of the 'wooden spoon' have had the biggest win of the round on 31 occasions. Those that did it more than once in a season were: Essendon 1907 (3), Richmond 1917 (2), Sydney/SM 1922 (2), Nth Melbourne 1956 (2), Geelong 1957 (2), Sydney/SM 1973 (2), St Kilda 1983 (2).

5)
Only 2 Premiers have failed to record at least 1 biggest win of the round - Richmond in 1934 and Hawthorn in 1961.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

In the modern era what is the longest winning streak any one player has had over one team? (I know Collingwood had a streak of 20+ wins over Hawthorn from memory in the '20s and '30s)

Luke Ball has never lost a game against Carlton.

Currently has a 12-0 record against them.
