Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats [Part 2]

Round 18 2011

1) Adelaide’s
24 pts: The lowest score recorded at Docklands Stadium. Previous: Fremantle 4.4-28 v St Kilda 17.9-111 round 4 2009. (7 of the lowest 8 scores at Docklands have been v St Kilda and the other of the 8 was by St Kilda.)

2) Second half - Collingwood 6.7-43 v Gold Coast 6.7-43. Collingwood's 37th drawn 2nd half and the first since round 13, 2010 v Sydney/SM - also 6.7-43 each.

3) First time Carlton has defeated Essendon by 10 goals or more in consecutive seasons. Previous: Won by 76 points round 19, 2010.

4) Richmond joins Melbourne for the most occasions of only 1 goal in a first half - 4 each - in the last 4 seasons. Collingwood, Fremantle, and St Kilda have done it twice, no other team more than once.

5) Hawthorn scored their 2,000th goal and 14,000th point against Melbourne during their match.

5. Fremantle have hosted a game on ANZAC Day 9 times; West Coast have yet to host one.

With this game being Freo's Len Hall game I think it unlikely that WC will host an ANZAC game until a third Perth team.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats [Part 2]

2011 Round 19

1) Geelong v Melbourne: The only match played where a team scored 50 points or more each quarter.

2) Collingwood has so far this year had the highest percentage of ‘biggest wins of the round’. Next most is Melbourne followed by Geelong.

3) Gold Coast's percentage after 17 matches is the lowest of any of the teams that joined the League after 1897 in their first 17 matches.

4) 9th time that Essendon has been beaten by 10 goals or more in consecutive matches. (Six times 2006-2011).

5) Combined scores for 2011 Adelaide 25.27 v Port Adelaide 25.27.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats [Part 2]

Cats were late developers in high scoring

In round 9 1936 Geelong bettered their highest score by scoring 26.18-174 v Essendon.

That was not bettered for 51 years until they scored 29.10-184 v Fitzroy in round 5 1987.

At that stage Geelong had one entry in the highest 50 scores. (49th place.)

Currently Geelong has 8 of the 50 highest scores - equal most with Hawthorn.
Geelong places: 1,4,7,equal 9, equal 15, equal 18, equal 35 and equal 48.
Hawthorn places: 5,8,13,23,24,equal 41,equal 45 and equal 48.

Currently 6 of the last 13 scores of 200 points or more have been scored by Geelong.

There has been some discussion about consecutive 100-point victories. With regards to Sydney's brilliant three-match run in 1987 of 130 pt, 163 pt and 91 pt wins, I noticed that this was a rare three match home streak for them at the SCG.

Sydney's 3 consecutive games at the SCG:
- 1987 Rounds 6, 7, 8; Rounds 16, 17, 18
- 1988 Rounds 10, 11, 12
- 1996 Round 22, QF, PF
- 1997 Rounds 15, 16, 17
- 1998 Round 22, QF, SF

With North Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs playing some home games at the SCG, Sydney have even had 4 and 5 consecutive games at the SCG.

RR....i was at the Geelong K.P double in 1981 where Geelong in successive weeks beat St.Kilda 135-35 and then followed up with a whipping of 170-56 over the Kangaroos, a side Geelong had serious trouble with in the mid-late 70's....Brian Peake's first game. That score of 26.14.170 i think was Geelong's second or 3rd highest scoring game.

Counting those two hundred point wins....can you tell me how many wins of 100+ points has Geelong had since 1980? Given i started watching them in the late 70's i reckon i've been fortunate to see probably at least 75% of such wins in the club's history, and for good measure about 90% of their top scores!!

I recall with some glee as the draw for the 1987 season came out, Geelong played reigning wooden spooner St.Kilda in Rd 1 and then had a four game home-stand at K.P from Rd's 2 to 5. In successive weeks we played the new chums the Bears, Melbourne, North and Fitzroy. Only the Lions of that group were finallists the previous season...

Loss to the Bears, win over the Dees, a high-scoring loss to North 18.19.127 to 19.22.136 (eerily similar score to the Rd 22 loss against the Hawks that cost us a place in the finals) and then the 29.10.184 against the Lions. K.P was far from a fortress back in those days that's for sure. Indeed from 1982 to 1988, Geelong had at best a mediocre record of barely more than 50% at home!

Geelong's 1981 score against North of 170 pts. was their 3rd highest at the time and their highest since 1936.

There have been 162 100 point or more wins since 1980.
Geelong has had the most - 21
Next most is Essendon and Nth Melbourne 17, followed by Hawthorn 16.

Of teams that have competed in all seasons from 1980, Melbourne and WB/Footscray have had the least - 4 each.

Geelong's record at KP 1982-88 was less than 50% - 47.69% 31 wins and 34 losses. They did better in combined scores - 6,500 v 6,501.

Collingwood has 'kicked the sweep' (had the highest score of the round) in 12.82% of their matches (280 times) - the highest of any club.

Next are Essendon 11.90% (257 times), Carlton 11.81% (258 times) and Geelong 9.98% (214 times)

University kicked the sweep in a higher percentage of their matches (5.56%) than has WB/Footscray (5.43%), North Melbourne (5.37%), West Coast (5.34%) and Fremantle (4.61%)

All current teams except Gold Coast and Richmond have 'kicked the sweep' at least once in the last 3 seasons. Richmond last kicked the sweep round 5, 2008.

Geelong's 17.15-117 v Hawthorn in round 3 of 2011 was the lowest highest score of the round since Sydney's 17.14-116 v Essendon round 18, 2006.

interesting about the highest scores of the round.

what about conceeding the lowest score of the round??

i reckon west coast would feature very prominentaly of that given our defence in the early 90's.

As a pecentage of rounds played West Coast comes in 5th - 9.94% (54 times) behind Adelaide 11.87% (54 times), Carlton 11.72% (256 times), Collingwood 11.17% (244 times), Geelong 11.10% (238 times.)

However because the chance of conceding the lowest score of the round is effected by how many teams are competing, if the period is taken just from 1987, the postions are Adelaide 11.87% (54 times), West Coast 9.94% (54 times), Port Adelaide 9.54% (31 times), Geelong 8.29% (45 times.).

1997-2010 where all teams played the same number of rounds (308) against the same opponents the figures are:
Code:
Adelaide 40
St Kilda 32
Port Adelaide 31
Geelong 30
Sydney 27
Brisbane 27
West Coast 20
Richmond 17
Collingwood 17
Hawthorn 15
Essendon 14
Carlton 14
Melbourne 13
Fremantle 10
North Melbourne 9
WB/Footscray 5

(Note that some lowest scores conceded of the round were shared equally.)

Demonstrates some of the problems of relative comparisons.

More stuff here about superlatives by the round.

In 2011 to round 19, 31.97% of matches have been decided by 50 points or more.

This is the highest percentage for a season since 34.05% in 1996. (1996 had the highest percentage of 50 points or more margins in a season.)

The percentages for recent seasons have been:
2010 27.42%
2009 23.24%
2008 28.11%
2007 21.26%
2006 26.49%

However if Fitzroy is removed from 1996 the percentage comes down to 28.83%

If the Gold Coast is removed from 2011 the percentage comes down to 27.69%

In 2011 Collingwood became the first team to score 2,000 points or more (2,057) after 17 matches since Essendon in 2001 (2,048).

The only other time Collingwood has had 2,000 points after 17 matches was in 1977 (2,034).

34 teams have scored 2,000 points or more after 17 matches.

The first was Sydney/SM in 1934 (2,090). No team scored 2,000 points or more after 17 matches again until 1977. (Hawthorn 2,039 and Collingwood 2,034)

The most points scored after 17 matches is 2,521 by Geelong in 1992.

Hawthorn has scored 2,000 or more points after 17 matches on 9 occasions - the most of any team. Next: Essendon 6, North Melbourne 4.

Hawthorn had 2,000 or more points on the board by 17 matches in 4 consecutive seasons, 1982-85 and a further 3 consecutive seasons 1997-89. The only other teams to have done it in consecutive seasons are North Melbourne 1982-3 and Geelong 1991-2

Collingwood over Port the 9th margin of 100+ for the year. Most in a season:

10 - 1991
9 - 2011*
8 - 1983,1985,1992,1996
7 - 1987
6 - 1944,1979,1980,1982,1986,1993,1995,2000

I think there's only 2 point possible 100+ point games left. Hawks v Port next week and Gold Coast v Hawks in Round 24.
