^^ Richmond lost three of these in the first five games of 1987. The final leg against the Swans brought about the infamous footage of Tony Jewell apparently tearing his hair out in the box.

Jumped!

So far this year 14 teams have been ‘jumped’ in the first quarter, finding themselves 6 goals or more behind at quarter time.
This is the 3rd equal highest in one season. Most: 17 in 1995, 15 in 1985, 14 in 1983, 1999 and 2010. (There were 7 in 2009).

In 2011 Gold Coast has contributed 5 of the instances and Port Adelaide 3.

Collingwood, Geelong and Hawthorn have each done 2 of the ‘jumpings’.

Gold Coast are the only ones this year to have won after being ‘jumped’ (v Richmond.)

Of 544 teams that have found themselves 6 goals or more down at quarter time, 53 have gone on to win and one forced a draw.

Collingwood didn’t trail by six goals or more at quarter time until their 1,281st match in the competition, round 16 1964 v Carlton. Trailing 0.3-3 v 6.5-41 at ¼ time, the Magpies recovered to draw the match 12.8-79 v 11.13-79. Since that match Collingwood has been down 6 goals or more at the first break a further 17 times for 3 wins and 14 losses. The last being round 17, 2007 v Brisbane – trailed by 39 points at the first break - lost by 93 points – 7.14-56 v 22.17-149. (The current longest gap in being 'jumped' of any team.)

In last year’s Preliminary Final, Collingwood broke Geelong’s club record 480 game streak of not being ‘jumped’ in the first quarter.

Of teams that have competed from 1925, WB/Footscray has the highest percentage of matches where they trailed by 6 goals or more at 1/4 time - 3.04% (54) and Collingwood the least - 0.97% (18). WB/Footscray however has currently gone the 2nd longest after Collingwood, not being 'jumped'. Last: Round 3 2008 v St Kilda 1.2-8 v 7.3-45, but the Bulldogs went on to win 19.11-125 v 13.9-87.

Only 9 eventual Premiers have trailed in a match by 6 goals or more at 1/4 time in the season they won the flag.

1900 R1: Melbourne v St Kilda - trailed by 35 - lost 9.13-67 v 10.8-68
1931 PF: Geelong v Carlton - trailed by 47 - won 11.17-83 v 11.11-77
1938 R6: Carlton v Melbourne - trailed by 47 - lost 14.18-102 v 16.11-107
1942 R14: Essendon v Carlton - trailed by 40 - lost 11.9-75 v 18.20-128
1946 R10: Essendon v Geelong - trailed by 47 - lost 12.15-87 v 18.18-126
1950 R15: Essendon v WB/Footscray - trailed by 46 - won 10.11-71 v 10.9-69
1952 R7: Geelong v Carlton - trailed by 43 - lost 13.15-93 v 18.12-120
1983 R19: Hawthorn v Essendon - trailed by 45 - lost 16.14-110 v 23.18-156
1997 R13: Adelaide v Geelong - trailed by 36 - lost 7.12-54 v 17.8-110.

Very interesting!

In the majority of cases, its as you would expect - an unchanged team is fit and playing well and so does better than average.
But have a look at who have done worse with an unchanged team!
Poor lists and/or poor team management?

Poor lists and/or poor team management?

Reasons probably vary, e.g. the temptation not to make unforced changes to a struggling team after a morale-boosting win would be strong.

e.g. Richmond's win percentage with unchanged sides ran at 73% through the Dyer era; Terry Wallace was responsible for 10 of Richmond's 73 instances and won just 3 of those.

Could we see the figures just from 1997?

And if you are also interested, the overall percentage of unchanged sides in different eras?

Stynes played 244 in a row?

If you are asking whether this statistic is correct, it sure is. If I recall correctly, Stynes' total can further be boosted by the fact he also played in every night/preseason game and practice game Melbourne played during that time.

Most matches missed between debut and milestone game, where milestones were reached at one club:

Interesting....if Harvey hadn't missed 3 full seasons he would've smashed the 400 barrier. If he was healthy as Goodes he would've passed Tuck.

With talk about fixing the fixture on the Main forum, I posted this to highlight the extent to which some Victorian teams travel compared to others. Collingwood travels west by far the least, followed by Essendon and the Western Bulldogs. Carlton have the short straw here, having flown west almost twice as much as Carlton in recent years.

Victorian clubs, H&A games in Adelaide, 2004-2011
9 - Collingwood
10 - St Kilda
11 - Essendon, Geelong, Western Bulldogs
12 - Hawthorn, Melbourne, North Melbourne, Richmond
13 - Carlton

Victorian clubs, H&A games in Perth, 2003-2011
8 - Collingwood
11 - Hawthorn
12 - Melbourne
13 - Essendon, Western Bulldogs
14 - Richmond, North Melbourne
15 - Carlton, Geelong, St Kilda

I wonder what Football Managers would make of these?
I wonder too if the figures from 1930 to before the interchange reflect, the rotation of 19th and 20th men, who in many cases did not take the field while the team selected in field positions remained the same?

What would a breakdown for 2011 look like - the accumulated changes of each team, broken down into injured, omitted, suspended and 'sore'?

Note McHale's two huge sequences. Some references credit him with the 1930 GF, even though he did not attend the match due to illness. Must've been pretty severe 'flu.

Likewise, most sources credit Sheedy with R16 2006, when Gary O'Donnell stood in for him.
