Off the top of my head, Essendon v Melbourne is still the most common grand final pairing.

Carlton v Collingwood and Collingwood v Geelong Grand Finals have both occured six times. I think Essendon v Melbourne Grand Finals have occured seven times. Off the top of my head anyway..

Collingwood v Geelong also becomes the equal second most common Grand Final Final combination with Carlton v Collingwood, Carlton v Essendon, Carlton v Richmond and Collingwood v Richmond all on 6 Grand Final meetings. Most: 7 - Collingwood v Melbourne, Essendon v Melbourne.

Retrospective Match/Win Ratio Tables - 2011

Collingwood has clearly won a higher percentage of their matches than any other club since the VFL/AFL began in 1897 and currently they have won the highest percentage since their Premiership year of 2010. But if we start in 2009, Geelong nudges out Collingwood as the team with the highest match win percentage. In the last three seasons, Geelong has won a higher percentage of their matches than any other team, putting them on top of any Match/Win% table. But what if we work backwards, how long does Geelong stay on top?

Last 100 to 1,000 Wins - to the end of 2011

• Geelong have realised their last 100 wins from 151 fewer matches than Richmond.
• Fremantle and Nth Melbourne have won exactly 100 matches each from round 16, 2002.
• Carlton, Melbourne and Richmond are yet to win 100 matches this century.
• Geelong's last 200 wins have come in 10 fewer years than Richmond's.
• Richmond is the only team to have not had 200 wins from 1990 to 2011.
• Geelong's last 300 wins have come in 12 fewer years than Richmond's.
• Richmond is the only team to have not won 300 matches since 1980.
• Hawthorn's last 400 wins have come in 16 fewer years than Melbourne's

Melbourne not having even 300 wins since 1970 is an amazing statistic. That's 42 seasons, and having sub-300 wins suggests the Dees have won close to average of just seven games a season since 1970.

By contrast, Geelong's last 300 wins have come since mid-1991.

A typo has made the Demon's worse than they really are!

The 300 in that statement should have been 400 (as the table of the last 400 wins shows.) Melbourne has to go back to middle of 1966 to tally up 400 wins. The comparison is with Hawthorn who only have to go back to 1982 for their last 400 wins.

Since 1970 Melbourne have had 379 wins for an average of 9 per season with an average m/w% per season of 39.57%. It still the worst performance of any team that has competed 1970-2011

Also noticed that of the eight original VFL clubs, St Kilda are the only one who hasn't yet got to 1000 wins. The Saints sit on 865 wins now, still just behind the 869 Fitzroy managed before they folded in 1996.

Hawthorn are just 15 wins behind St Kilda on 850, despite joining the competition 28 years after them.

Century Scores:

• Of teams that have competed since 1987, only Geelong and Nth Melbourne have scored centuries in more than half of their matches. In the same period, Richmond has scored centuries in under a third of their matches.

• Highest percentage of century scores in a season - 1982 - 64.13% (37.76% in 2011).

That is astonishing, especially for the 2nd highest goal tally of all time, and those 16 and 17 goal hauls would surely have been miles above any other personal best in VFL history to that time. Lockett and Dunstall are the only players to kick more than 15 in a game since Templeton in 1978.

e.g. Adelaide has played 486 games and has had more cumulative points for than against after 269 of those games; they currently have 45658 points for and 43865 against (aggregate +1793); and the last time they were in deficit was Round 17, 2002.

Interesting points are that Collingwood and Essendon have never been in deficit, and that only 6 of 19 clubs are currently in the black, with Collingwood, Carlton, Essendon and Geelong all showing a massive surplus.

Actually, after winning its first VFL game, Richmond was in deficit until 1931. They went almost 80 years before returning to the red last year. I've augmented the table with the number of changes (e.g. Richmond + first game, then - to 1931, + to 2010, - to current = 3 changes).

It's generally the newer clubs in the more even modern era that have shown the most volatility.

Cheers RTB, thanks for that. Eagles with 12 'changes of lead' so to speak in their history? Didn't realise Geelong has had 11.....i recieved a spreadsheet of Geelong's figure over the year and upon greater perusal the bad war years saw Geelong dip up and down a bit in that 50's and early 60's era. Certainly the Cat's number has ballooned significantly in the last couple of decades.

Pies and Bombers being early powerhouses have of course generally been ahead all the time.
