An amazing parallel spoilt by Collingwood getting that last point or goal in the 1977 Grand Final:
These are the only matches since 1919 where the winning team has failed to goal in the second and third quarters. There were 21 such matches from 1897 to 1918.
As any person with knowledge of VFL/AFL history should know, these are the only matches since 1919 (in fact, since 1912) where both teams scored three or fewer goals. Although there were 31 such games from 1897 to 1911, it is to be expected that these three later occurrences attract much more attention when VFL/AFL history is written because scores were so much higher - an average of about 48 points from 1897 to 1911 versus 74 in 1927, 99 in 1977 and 94 (really more due to the weather) in 1989.
What is amazing is that the games of both pairs occurred in 1927 and 1989. North Melbourne in the drawn 1977 Grand Final did not goal in the second and third quarter. Had the Kangaroos got up late in the 1997 Grand Final, it would have been a double for the three years of 1927, 1977 and 1989, which logically is quite amazing.
