North 183 d GWS 54

=2nd most disposals by any side (505)
2nd most handballs by any side (294)
4th most handballs by both sides (455)
=4th highest winning margin for North
7th most disposals by both sides (855)
=11th highest score for North

GWS kicked 2.4 across 3 quarters but managed 6.2 in the 3rd. It could have been worse for them.

North Melbourne's score of 28 15 183 is their best since 28 19 187 Round 22 2003 vs Carlton.

North Melbourne's margin of 129 points is their highest since the corresponding round in 1996 vs Fitzroy when they won by 131 points.

That match was against Footscray actually, not the Roys. It's "immortalised" in that classic documentary "Year of the Dogs."

North had 15 goalkickers today, is that a club record?

My bad.

North Melbourne's disposal tally of 505 possessions easily a personal best for the club and Ryan Bastinac's 44 possessions is now the most by a player in one game by a player born in 1991.

Hmm, depends how you look at it. It is true that not one of the 9 teams won in both Rounds 7 and 8 in 1922, but Essendon did win in Rounds 6 and 7, then had a bye in Round 8. I assume you counted the bye as a break in the win streak.

Got me there. Query was pretty rough and dirty and didn't take byes into account as I was hoping to avoid the ~40 minutes it's just taken to answer this question definitively. :)

The full and complete list of occasions when no team has won two in a row, at the completion of a round, is:

This is a comparison between some of the game's best performed full forwards which looks at their four best seasons in terms of goal average, taking into account only the seasons in which a player has kicked 50 goals or more. I was originally thinking of making it their five best seasons, but for John Coleman, he basically only had five full seasons before his injury, and Peter Hudson only had six full seasons, and I wasn't sure about incorporating the large majority of a player's career. So I made a decision on what I thought made for interesting reading, but still hopefully looks at a generous enough slice of many players' careers.

Jack Riewoldt has returns of 1, 0, 0 and 0 goals from his four Round 2 matches. His average of 0.25 is 1.93 below his career average, which started me thinking about other players who have had 'bogey rounds'.

Biggest (negative) difference between career and round average (minimum 4 matches in round):

Round 2 2012 Trivia:

  • The Giants results after 2 matches ranks 1,380th out of 1388 results from the first 2 matches of a season.

  • Collingwood and Hawthorn have each lost 3 of their last 6 matches.

  • Only the 4th time that West Coast has won a match by 18 points or more each quarter.

  • Richmond's last goal was their 26.00th since entering the League in 1908.

  • GWS' goal tally in the third quarter is the equal third highest for a team that was goalless at half-time.

Only the legendary Worrall - the first ever football coach - proved an unqualified success. Of the others, Eade crept above 50% and led Sydney to a GF appearance, Jack Hale broke new ground at Hawthorn, and Brad Scott is making a good fist of things at North.

Greats to have started with consecutive losses include Jock McHale, Checker Hughes, David Parkin, Kevin Sheedy (Essendon) & Allan Jeans (St.Kilda).

Probably safe to say that Sheedy will be 0-6 after 6 rounds, which is only slightly worse than his 1-5 start at Essendon in 1981. Should have sacked him then! Although going into Round 22, a win was likely to have given us the minor premiership and the week off. Alas, we (3rd) lost to Geelong (4th) then lost the Elimination Final to Fitzroy (5th) and that was that :( But we did win the Night Series that year :thumbsu:, a game that featured the famous Tim Watson jump over the pack and run into goal.

The Round 2 GWS team (av age 21.33, av gms 32.0) was the youngest since Round 6, 1972 (North Melbourne, 21.22, 26.8).

As a Bulldogs supporter, I was expecting to see Royce Hart in there, considering we lost our first eleven games of his first year in charge (1980). After how many matches would Hart appear in your top 25?

After 7 games (there are only 25 coaches who've lost their first 7). Hart's record ranked:

187th of 225 coaches to lose their 1st match
105th/135 coaches to lose their first 2
66th/79.....3
37th/59.....4
31st/43.....5

19th/25.....7
15th/23.....8

12th/12.....10

The win in Round 12 put him back down (or up?) to 17th.

The Round 2 GWS team (av age 21.33, av gms 32.0) was the youngest since Round 6, 1972 (North Melbourne, 21.22, 26.8).
They have to be a good chance to 'improve' on that when a couple of the veterans are out with arthritis or dementia or something. Gives me a reason to be interested in the Giants ins and outs each week.

How much of an advantage will Adelaide and North Melbourne reap this year by their draw?

* These teams made finals that year (Final Five)
** These teams made finals that year (Final Four)
*** Melbourne played 6 of their 18 games in 1926 against the three clubs that joined the league the previous year. Melbourne went on to make the finals and win the premiership.

In 1925, no team played Hawthorn and Footscray 4 times or Hawthorn and North Melbourne 4 times.

In 1908 and 1909, all eight establishment clubs played Richmond and University twice each in both seasons.

Interesting contribution.

This is also the factor that GC and GWS are relatively the worst performed.

For those not already following - comparative tables are here.

The difference in 1926 may have meant that Melbourne without an extra win or two against the 'easy-beats' would have most likely met Geelong in an elimination final instead of Collingwood who they had already beaten twice whereas they had failed in their only match against Geelong. (They beat top of the ladder, Collingwood 4 times to take the premiership and then not again until 1937.)

Hawthorn in 1987 could have done without the extra West Coast match (they lost both) an extra win that year would have given them top spot on the ladder and a week's rest before playing their semi-final.

Herald-Sun article: 11 April 2012

Calls for drastic draw reforms as bookmakers ban bets on Greater Western Sydney. (Behind pay-wall but Google the headline to read it.)
Ted Hopkins, considered the godfather of AFL stats and mathematical analysis, delivered a stern warning to the league.

Hopkins said Fitzroy and University were the only clubs to finish a season with a percentage of 60 or below in the past. Both clubs are now extinct.
Fact:

34 teams have finished the season with "a percentage of 60 or below in the past" including the non-extinct Carlton, Geelong, Hawthorn, Melbourne, Nth Melbourne, St Kilda and Sydney/Sth Melbourne.

The last time Geelong finished with a percentage below 60% in 7 years time they had won the first of back-to-back premierships and in the next two seasons were to set the standing League records of 23 consecutive wins and 26 consecutive matches without defeat.

Gold Coast's percentage in 2011 ranks 13th highest of the 34 below 60%.

That's a curious thing for Hopkins to say. Hard to imagine how he could've been misquoted.

Yet another example of a newspaper using statistics in an article clearly without checking the facts. It might have saved the HS and Ted Hopkins some embarrassment if they did. I won't hold my breath waiting for a retraction and an apology for any "hysteria" caused.

It was quite obvious that Gold Coast and GWS would take a few years to really get going, but I suspect the day may eventually come when we wish they weren't so strong, as opposed to being so weak. Lumping Melbourne in with the two new clubs is totally unfair, however.

They never acknowledge nor publish any of my corrections and probably nobody else's . The information I posted here was put in as a comment on the article and has not appeared.

The Herald-Sun nor its predecessor the Sun News Pictorial have ever had much concern about being 'journals of record'.
