Question without notice re: Buddy's 13 on saturday.

As the quarter time siren sounded he was yet to kick a goal, but with 10:13 remaining in the 3rd he had kicked his 10th.
I assume the timing of goals within a game wouldnt have been kept too far back in terms of records, but this has to be right up there in terms of an AFL/VFL record (10 goals in a quarter and a half game time)?

Not far back if at all.
Just for starters though, Melbourne's Harry Davie in round 14 1925 kicked 13 goals including 8 in the 3rd quarter*. You might like to research the online match reports to see if there is any evidence of when the other 5 were scored. (You know where to find them?)

*Published in "Everything you wanted to know about Football but couldn't be bothered asking - 1982"

Also reports: 8 in one quarter by South's Bob Pratt v Carlton in 1934, Collingwood's Gordon Coventry v Hawthorn in 1929 and 7 by Melbourne's Fred Fanning v StKilda in 1947.

Fred Fanning had 12 by half time in his last match.

Michael Roach came off the bench 14 minutes into the third quarter and finished with 10 goals against Swan Districts in an Escort Cup match in 1982.

The most interesting part of that first 500 table, IMO, is how many more draws Fitzroy and Carlton were involved in than any other team. 13 for Carlton, 11 for Fitzroy. Contrast that to North and Hawthorn only having 3.

The incidence of draws in the 2096 matches prior to 1925 was exactly double that in the next 2096, after North & Hawthorn joined the VFL.

Would not expect afl.com.au to be correct with anything AFL-related
A little harsh but as with much that is put online and in print the text is entered by people with no knowledge of the subject and therefore no ability to say, "is that right?". Putting text on web pages is still regarded by most organisations as the exclusive domain of "web designers" and those who know about PHP, ASP, XML, CSS etc. There also appears to be less and less or no time for checking.
With the pay-wall I haven't been keeping track of the statistical boners published by the Herald-Sun. The AFL site has never came close to competing with them for nonsense.

Observed in Round 11 2012:

  • Geelong defeat Carlton in consecutive matches, each time 3 fewer scoring shots than the Blues.
  • Fremantle's 4th win in Victoria in 32 matches.
  • Gold Coast's 7th loss by 90 points or more in 33 matches. (Hawthorn have had 7 losses of 90 points or more in their last 768 matches.)
  • Essendon's fewest goals with the most behinds at 3/4 time since 1901.
  • Hawthorn win 3 consecutive matches v Port Adelaide for the first time.
  • The fifth team to score 9.0 in the last quarter.

Quite a few Carlton players needing a rest there and one 'Ga' player too!

Essendon's last 2 home games against Melbourne have been at Melbourne's home ground, the MCG. Melbourne have won both of those games. Since football began at Docklands, 6 of Essendon's 10 home games against Melbourne have been at the MCG. In the AFL's wisdom, they have scheduled Essendon's home game against Hawthorn this year at Docklands. Not a lot of sense shown in these decisions. Compare with Collingwood who play Gold Coast and Fremantle at the MCG.

Essendon and Geelong tend to play at Docklands these days rather than the MCG.

St Kilda's home game this year against Melbourne is also at the MCG.

With talk in some areas of the media that Buddy Franklin had a chance of posting 11 goals versus Brisbane Lions, which he needed to reach 500, I decided to research who had been furthest away from this milestone prior to achieving it.
