Little bit of the 'Robert Klomps' about Gavin Brown's effort in 1997 for SA, but nice to see an assortment of players in various positions win the medal. Ruckmen, KPF's, KPB's, rovers, wingmen....it's all there.

No player is yet to win the Norm Smith Medal and also collect three Brownlow votes against the same opposition in both home and away meetings in the same season. Two players have won the Norm Smith and collected three Brownlow votes in the only home and away game their team was allocated against the same opposition. James Hird did this against Melbourne in 2000 (3 Brownlow votes in round 9) and Nathan Buckley did likewise against Brisbane Lions in 2002 (3 Brownlow votes in round 8).

893 VFL matches had passed when the first bag of exactly 9 goals was scored by Melbourne's Harry Brereton in 1909. In every season from 1975 to 2009 at least one player managed the feat, but since Brendan Fevola's effort against Richmond, a hundred years after Brereton, 659 matches have been completed - the second-longest drought ever.

2012 was the League's 116th year of competition.
This span can be divided into four 29 year periods.
1897-1925: 1926-1954: 1955-1983: 1984-2012
Click on the link above for a menu of various performance categories and each clubs Head-to-Head records against the others overall and in the 4 time periods.

Some observations:

  • ¨ One club’s overall match/win percentage has varied little more than 1% in the 4 periods.
  • ¨ One club’s m/w% in the most recent period is over 200% higher than their first full period of 29 years.
  • ¨ Two clubs have each amassed a surplus of 8,000 more points over opponents in the last 29 seasons than they did in the previous 29.
  • ¨ One club, 1926-54 and 1955-83 had the highest percentage of wins in matches decided by 40 points or more. In the last 29 seasons, they rank 7th.
  • ¨ 1926-1954 three clubs won more matches than they lost in over 80% of their seasons. In the last 29 years, the club with the highest percentage of seasons with more wins than loses is 69.23%.
  • ¨ In the first ‘3 quarters’ at least 1 team won 60% of their matches in more than 60% of their seasons. In the last ‘quarter’ no team has won 60 percent of their matches in 50% or more of their seasons.
  • ¨ One team has managed to go 29 seasons in each period without winning fewer than 30% of their matches each season.

Just dragging something up we talked about last year started from this:
http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/stats-questions-part-1.577967/page-38#post-21515704

It seems now the Lions have gone back to 11 premierships,

and are hedging their bets by having several versions of their stats.
http://www.lions.com.au/Default.aspx?tabid=5162
This has been noted before. The AFL Record Season Guide has Brisbane Lions as having 11 Premierships (3 'Lions', 8 'Fitzroy' and 0 'Bears') but the only Premiership tally table that the Season Guide publishes (Premierships in all Grades) has Fitzroy 8, Brisbane 3 with no mention of Brisbane 'Bears' having 0.

Then the Season Guide treats all other records as separate for Fitzroy and as one for Brisbane from 1987. This makes the club site at odds with the AFL in the way it treats the pre and post 'merger' records.

Probably needs the League to make some further clarification for those of us who care about such things.

Probably needs the League to make some further clarification for those of us who care about such things.

Over the past 15 years, the League has been pretty clear that they regard the Brisbane Lions as a club that began in 1987. Under that policy, the Brisbane Lions have three premierships.

The Lions' own official policy is that the Brisbane Lions began in 1997. Under that policy, the Brisbane Lions have three premierships.

Of course eleven premierships sounds more impressive than three. Hence the increasing blurring of Fitzroy's and Brisbane's history by the Lions.

When the "Official Statistical History of the AFL" (AFL Record Season Guide 2010) publishes information such as the above - some clarification is needed from the League. Not only are Fitzroy's premiership claimed but the 'Bears', contrary to League policy are designated as a separate entity that won no premierships.
Someone else can confirm if later editions include the same information.

Yes, it is exactly the same on the corresponding page in the 2012 edition.

"but the only Premiership tally table that the Season Guide publishes (Premierships in all Grades) has Fitzroy 8, Brisbane 3 with no mention of Brisbane 'Bears' having 0".

This also is unchanged. Quite bizarre, really!

Certainly bizarre and bizarre that this conversation exists some 15 years after the 'merger'.

Whereas the League's position is that Fitzroy's records ended with the 1996 season and Brisbane's continued on from 1987-1996, the Brisbane Lions now seem to consider themselves as four entities. One that has won 8 premierships, one that has won 3 premierships, one that conceded the highest score in the history of the League (and for 10 seasons played matches against itself) and one that has won 11 premierships (but presumably didn't concede the highest score ever.)

If only Fitzroy had just moved north and become the Brisbane Lions for the 1987 season!

Chuck in the VFL/AFL disassociation that some people advocate, and you've got yourself another couple of slices in the pie chart.

Although that might give them ideas, a way of forcing all these separate records together so they look like one is pie chartiness.

Not the most exciting stat, but this year Bob Skilton presented the premiership cup for the second time. He had previously done so in 1999. Only Bob Davis, among football allumni, has also presented the premiership cup twice (1995 and 2009). The governor of Victoria used to present the cup on a yearly basis up until 1985, and then Bob Hawke presented it twice as PM in 1986 and 1987, before Robert Flower was a worthy first non political presenter the following year.

So could that mean whoever presented Adelaide with the cup in 1998 will present it to next years premier as there's a 15 year gap.

1999-2012 = 13 years difference.
1995-2009 = 14 years difference.
1998-2013 = 15 years difference.

Royce Hart was the 1998 presenter. But if you look at Davis and Skilton, their former clubs were playing in the grand final in 2009 and 2012. So, are Richmond destined for mighty things next season?

The first players to play matches for premiership points on all seven days of the week were Richmond stalwarts, Kevin Bartlett and Francis Bourke, on Anzac Day 1980 (which fell on a Friday).

73 players in all have done this, including current players Dustin Fletcher, Ben Johnson, Dane Swan, Alan Didak, Travis Cloke, Heath Shaw, Harry O'Brien, Dale Thomas and Nick Maxwell.

Adam Ramanauskas achieved it the fastest - 712 days after his first game, while Alastair Lynch took until 15 years and 1 day from his debut.

28 players have played in a win on every day of the week, including Fletcher and Didak.

With the retirements of Mark McVeigh and Chris Tarrant, Fletcher is the only current player among the 20 who've played in a loss on every day.

Fletcher, James Hird, Tarkyn Lockyer and Josh Fraser have played in both a win and a loss on every day.

Gavin Wanganeen is the only player to have played in a draw on four different weekdays.
