Little bit of the 'Robert Klomps' about Gavin Brown's effort in 1997 for SA,

From memory Robert Harvey played an exceedingly good game that year ;)

Harvey amassed 24 kicks, 5 marks, 8 handballs, 0 frees for, 1 free against, kicked one behind and had one tackle versus SA in 1997. Nathan Burke had the next best possession count with 16 kicks and 8 handballs with David King having 21 kicks and 2 handballs. It does make you wonder a bit how Brown got the medal.

Similar to Brad Hardie's Simpson Medal performance in the 1986 State of Origin match between WA and Victoria (aka the greatest match ever played).

Hardie did a few good things, but he was back pocket in a side which gave up about 10 goals to the Weightman/Royal pairing and he rarely stayed on his man all day.

Meanwhile, Brian Peake (and his 7 goals), Gary Buckenara, Weightman, Royal, Maurice Rioli were all neglected.

worbod, have you got the stats handy for that match? I might have them at home, but I can't remember.

I personally don't have any state game stats before 1988 at home. The main sources for my state game stats are newspaper microfilms or Inside Football. I'm not sure if any newspaper printed stats for the state games in 1986. It's something I would have to check during a visit to Melbourne State Library. I could also check The Age via the Google News Archive Search, but maybe you have already done this. I wouldn't be able to do this specific check until I get home because I don't know the exact date of the 1986 game.

Looking at the WA lineup for that 1986 game is interesting, as it always bemused me back in the State of Origin days that there were complaints from elsewhere about Victoria playing the likes of Terry Daniher (NSW) and Jason Dunstall (Qld.), and how unfair that was! WA had Maurice Rioli (NT) and Leon Baker, Geoff Miles and Colin Waterson (all Vic.) in that team. SA played the likes of Tim Evans (Tas.), Peter Meuret (NSW), and stacks of Victorians e.g. Max Parker, David Bolton, Russell Johnston, Craig Williams, Grenville Dietrich, Rudi Mandemaker and others over the years. Even SA football legend Peter Carey qualifies as a Victorian, having lived there until he was 15. The rules, of course, were different back then to what they later became, but still I always found the complaints very amusing.

Don't forget Victoria had Brian Taylor - who only played for Victoria because Richmond recruited him from Mandurah before he got to play in the WAFL at any level.

But yeah - the rules were definitely different back then.
The Stephen McCann situation was the same as the Brian Taylor one. He bypassed the WAFL and went to North Melbourne, then played for Victoria. The rules that existed when State of Origin was last played were certainly fairer and more sensible than the earlier rule(s). Getting hold of a video of that 1986 game would be worthwhile, that's for sure.

Carlton and Richmond never scored less than 12 points in a first quarter. Nth Melbourne never in the 2nd and St Kilda never in the 3rd.

The Bulldogs scored less than 12 points in 10 first quarters and the Giants failed to get 12 points in 10 3rd quarters.

Fremantle and Sydney each kept opponents under 12 points in 9 first quarters. Sydney conceded less than 12 points in 8 2nd quarters and 11 third quarters. Fremantle conceded less than 12 points in 9 last quarters.

Gold Coast's opponents never scored less than 12 points in a last quarter and GWS never conceded less than 12 points in the 2nd and 3rd quarters.

Did you have any luck in finding whether the "West Australian" printed stats for the 1986 WA vs Vic game?

I thought I had the scans for the West Australian - turns out I didn't. I've got the scans for the Sunday Times, the Western Mail and Westside Football... but no stats unfortunately.

Matches lost by 18 points or more each quarter 1897-2012 (72 total)
The first of these matches was in 1899 (Geelong defeated St Kilda).
The first 5 (1899-1911) were lost by St Kilda.
14 occurred before 1970.
19 have occurred in the 21st century (2001-2012) - 5 of the wins have been by Geelong.

In the trade period, we had 35 players with previous AFL experience get either traded to clubs or went as free agents.

Jamie Cripps was the 35th and last player to switch clubs.

Cripps' number at St Kilda, 35.
