Enjoyed the word-association commentary from Bruce McAvaney last night, though I'm quite sure it was inadvertent. Had it come from Dennis Cometti it would most likely have been deliberate. The moment came after Brian Lake's goal near the three minute mark of the third quarter. It was the first goal of the game since the nine and a half minute mark of the second quarter, some 20 minutes previously. After Lake's goal went through, Bruce summed it up thus, "He's broken the drought, Lake."

Then you say in Soccer "where schedules are so long high winning eprcentages are not possible". I observe that Manchester United had a winning% of 81.6 in 2008-9.

If you say "all cats are black" and someone shows you a white one, it's time to reconsider you position and do some more research.

I was actually referring to baseball and ice hockey - where schedules are much longer than even in the EPL where seasons are still short enough for quite high winning percentages - it’s as if you did not see the parentheses!

The same point from my previous post applies to rugby league as it does to soccer - it’s just so much harder to achieve extremely high winning percentages than in Australian rules football because the number of scores per game is so much lower.

In other words, the relative skill level required for a winning percentage of 80 is much lower in Australian football than in soccer or rugby league. So it is unsurprising few teams in the NRL/NSWRL have achieved an 80 percent winning rate.
