Enjoyed the word-association commentary from Bruce McAvaney last night, though I'm quite sure it was inadvertent. Had it come from Dennis Cometti it would most likely have been deliberate. The moment came after Brian Lake's goal near the three minute mark of the third quarter. It was the first goal of the game since the nine and a half minute mark of the second quarter, some 20 minutes previously. After Lake's goal went through, Bruce summed it up thus, "He's broken the drought, Lake."

19 of 33 NRL/NSWRL teams have also not cracked the 80% in H&A. Some of them very short lived though, Cronulla & Penrith 47 seasons the most. Norths did it once in 92 seasons, but it was a very short one due to a Kangaroo tour.

Then you say in Soccer "where schedules are so long high winning eprcentages are not possible". I observe that Manchester United had a winning% of 81.6 in 2008-9.

If you say "all cats are black" and someone shows you a white one, it's time to reconsider you position and do some more research.
I was actually referring to baseball and ice hockey - where schedules are much longer than even in the EPL where seasons are still short enough for quite high winning percentages - it’s as if you did not see the parentheses!

Penrith got very near it in 1991 - 79.54 percent to be exact.

The same point from my previous post applies to rugby league as it does to soccer - it’s just so much harder to achieve extremely high winning percentages than in Australian rules football because the number of scores per game is so much lower.

In other words, the relative skill level required for a winning percentage of 80 is much lower in Australian football than in soccer or rugby league. So it is unsurprising few teams in the NRL/NSWRL have achieved an 80 percent winning rate.

Observed in the Round 1 Finals 2013.

The Swans biggest loss in a final since 2001.

One of the Swans’ 5 biggest losses in the last 10 seasons.

A first in a final for the Hawks since 1988.

A lowest since 1924 for the ‘Bloods’.

One of only 19 matches and the first final with a certain first half scoreline.

Hawks on the right side of the scoring ledger for the first since they joined the competition.

A 2nd time only for the Dockers.

The most matches ever lost by Geelong in a season with a particular type of scoreline.

The visitors at Kardinia Park this year have had more success at avoiding the space between the goal and behind posts.

Two 2nd time onlys for the Power.

Something Collingwood fans haven’t witnessed since 1951.

5th and 8th evens under the current finals system.

Something the Blues have done better only once before.

Something the Tigers have done worse only once before.

A crowd at a certain category of match not seen since 1971.

Peter Hudson's goal average for 1972 and 1973 was 8.0 per game.

Gordon Coventry's 306th and final game was a grand final loss v Geelong in 1937, on his 36th birthday.

Which players having retired at 27-38yo played the most games?

Special mention to Robert Walls who played 259 games and retired at 30y 5d. He would have had the record for a 29yo if he didn't play that last game.

And a special mention to Gary Ablett Jr who has played 253 games, his last at 29y 110d. He'd have the 29yo record if he retired right now.

Observed in Finals Round 2 – 2013.

50 up for Geelong.

7 unlucky for the 2nd time.

Black Cats lucky on Friday 13th.

Geelong’s 2nd best comeback after 1/2 time in a final.

A lowest in a final for Geelong in 60 years.

Port Adelaide’s narrowest loss with 11 fewer scoring shots.

The 4th highest attended Port Adelaide match.

Geelong to head the table of ‘final 8’ Preliminary finals played.
(Nudging out the next most by 1.)

A scoreline seen only 23 times in 117 seasons but last seen in September
at the MCG and also involving Port Adelaide.

A Port Adelaide 5 point win in 2007 is looking very lonely.

The Red and White’s success rate in finals is now just under 1.5% below
that of the Blues.

A Red and White feat not seen since 100 seasons ago.

8 goes 0 to 4.

A 3/4 time record for the Swans.

A first ever scoreline for a final (seen in 24 other matches.)

Finals scoring not seen since 1959 and 1918.

One of only two occurrences in a final since 1908.

I have always thought that Brownlow vote lists should be adjusted for the double-vote years 1976 and 1977. Below is the top 20 with the last column being half votes for 1976-77.

1 | Gary Dempsey | FO NM | 1967-1984 | 246 | 218.5 | 11 | Keith Greig | NM | 1971-1985 | 165 | 151
\ 2 | Robert Harvey | SK | 1988-2008 | 215 | 215 | 12 | Garry Wilson | FI | 1971-1984 | 161 | 139.5
\ 3 | Leigh Matthews | HW | 1969-1985 | 202 | 173.5 | 13 | Kevin Bartlett | RI | 1965-1983 | 160 | 136.5
\ 4 | Chris Judd | WC CA | 2002-2013 | 197 | 197 | 14 | Shane Crawford | HW | 1993-2008 | 159 | 159
\ 5 | Bob Skilton | SM | 1956-1971 | 180 | 180 | 15 | Brent Harvey | NM | 1996-2013 | 159 | 159
\ 6 | Simon Black | BL | 1998-2013 | 179 | 179 | 16 | Gary Ablett Jr | GE GC | 2002-2013 | 159 | 159
\ 7 | Nathan Buckley | BB CW | 1993-2007 | 178 | 178 | 17 | Adam Goodes | SY | 1999-2013 | 158 | 158
\ 8 | Kevin Murray | FI | 1955-1974 | 178 | 178 | 18 | Greg Williams | GE SY CA | 1984-1997 | 154 | 154
\ 9 | Scott West | WB | 1993-2008 | 175 | 175 | 19 | Sam Mitchell | HW | 2002-2013 | 154 | 154
\ 10 | Bill Hutchison | ES | 1942-1957 | 172 | 172 | 20 | Dick Reynolds | ES | 1933-1951 | 154 | 154
If you reorder by the adjusted total, Garry Wilson and Kevin Bartlett drop out of the top 20 and Michael Voss and Ben Cousins come in. You would have to think that Ablett will jump to 5th on Monday (4th if you drop Leigh Matthews down).

Stephen Silvagni debuted for Carlton in round 7, 1985 versus the Swans, on their home ground (by now, the SCG)

You forgot to mention the numbers 8 and 5.

Good little get Worbod. :thumbsu:.

Ablett up from =14th to 5th for career Brownlow votes. Needs 16 next year to go 3rd behind Gary Dempsey and Robert Harvey (depending on how many Judd polls, I'm assuming not many).

And needs 5 BOGs next year to pass both of them to have the most 3-vote games by anyone.
