Hawthorn's 2013 premiership follows 5 years after their success in 2008. The last team to repeat this achievement was Carlton in 1987 which was 5 years after their 1982 premiership.

In 2008 and 2013, nine Hawthorn players played in both victories (plus the coach).
In 1982 and 1987, only one Carlton player played in both victories - Wayne Johnston.

I've long wanted to do a list of Brisbane and Geelong premiership players, might as well do it now. Can someone remind me why both Scott brothers did not play in the 2003 GF? Brad played 22/22 H&A games but no finals while Chris played 18/22 H&A games and the QF only.

St Kilda's forward of the late '50's and early '60's, William Young kicked 56 goals in each of his first 3 seasons.

Can someone remind me why both Scott brothers did not play in the 2003 GF? Brad played 22/22 H&A games but no finals while Chris played 18/22 H&A games and the QF only.

According to the 2004 AFL Record Season Guide, Brad suffered a broken leg in round 22 and missed the rest of the season. Chris missed the 2 finals prior to the Grand Final with a groin injury, and was only named as an emergency for the GF.

From the 2003 AFL Record Season Guide:- "Saw only minimal ground time in the Grand Final and failed to record a disposal, but had earned his place."

Beau McDonald (injured in 1st quarter) also failed to register a stat. Leon Davis managed just 3 tackles (0 disposals) for the day. Sadly, I don't think Leon had an excuse!

Why? Because even a decade ago, football was more a game between the best 18 on the field at any one time, rather than a quantum mess of 21/22 footballers swarming on and off continually.

The Balance Sheet of Accumulated Points For and Accumulated Points Against.

Four teams achieved their highest ever running surplus of points scored over points conceded during 2013 (although three finished a little lower by season end).

One of the four went into the ‘black’ for the first time since they joined the League.

Three teams completed or improved on 5 or more consecutive seasons of scoring more points than they conceded.

Only 7 of the 20 clubs that have competed in the League 1897-2013 have scored more points than they have conceded in over half of the seasons that they have competed in.

In 2013 Essendon had their highest points surplus in 10 years.

Fremantle’s points surplus in 2013 was nearly double their previous highest.

Geelong’s 2013 points surplus was the same as after they lost the Preliminary Final in 1991.

Gold Coast’s 2013 points deficit was over 1,000 points smaller than their first season deficit.

GWS’ 2012 deficit was 15 points greater than their 2013 deficit.

Melbourne’s deficit in 2013 was nearly 200 points greater than their previous highest for a season.

Nth Melbourne’s surplus in 2013 was their highest for a season since their last premiership year.

Richmond in 2013 had their first consecutive season with a points surplus since 1996.

Sydney had their 17th season points surplus from their last 20 seasons.

The Bulldogs had a third consecutive season points deficit for the first time since 1991.

Where was Huddo in 1980?

Hudson retired after 1979 but came back briefly to assist Glenorchy during the final weeks of 1981. According to "Goals, Goals, Goals" by Marc Fiddian:

Hudson then retired as a player, but late in 1981 made a comeback while coaching Glenorchy because the side was lacking in attack. At 35 and not fully fit he decided to start as an interchange player and come on when needed.


This explains why he scored no goals in round 20 as he was not on the ground for very long.

How Long? Last 100 to 1,000 Wins - to the end of 2013​

Some observations:

• Geelong's last 100 wins have come from less than half the number of matches needed for Carlton, Richmond and Melbourne's last 100 wins.

• Geelong are the only team to have won 200 matches this century.

• Hawthorn and Nth Melbourne have each won exactly 300 matches from 552 matches starting from round 3, 1990.

• Melbourne are the only team to have required more than 1,000 matches to realise their last 400 wins.

• Nth Melbourne's last 500 wins have come from 1 fewer matches than have Carlton's last 500 wins.

• Hawthorn are the only team whose last 600 wins have come from fewer than 1,000 matches.

• Essendon and Geelong have each had exactly their last 700 wins from the same number of matches. (Collingwood's last 700 wins have come from 1 fewer matches.)

• Hawthorn's last 700 wins date from 1962 - St Kilda's from 1932.

• Collingwood's last 800 wins date from 1951 - St Kilda's from 1918.

• Carlton's last 900 and 1,000 wins have each come from two fewer matches than have Collingwood's last 900 and 1,000 wins.

1897-2013 – Eight teams share the status of being teams that another has their worst m/w% against and 6 of those teams are expansion teams that joined the competition after 1897.

2004-2013 – Four teams share the status of being the others hardest to defeat.
2009-2013 – Eleven teams share the status of being the others hardest to defeat.

2009-2013 More than half the teams competing in that period have their best m/w% against the same opponent.

The number of teams that had their worst m/w% against Geelong 2007-11 halved 2009-13.

Btw, StKilda FC became the first club ever fined by the League, when they took to the field 15 minutes late for their first ever VFL game on May 8th 1897.

Anyone know why the MCG wasn't used in the first Round of the VFL back in 1897.

Not specifically, but the MCG was not used for round 1 matches in 1897, 1898, 1900, 1901, 1903, 1904, 1906, 1907, 1908 and 1909. We can assume that the cricketers (or perhaps baseballers*) still had need of it. After a run of round 1 matches there 1911-1915, until 1964 it was relatively rare for it to be used for round 1 matches in consecutive years.

* I remember seeing a report of a Melbourne Cricket Club annual general meeting around this time with enthusiastic and greater coverage of the MCC's baseball team's exploits than that of the MCC's football team (Melbourne VFL). (Baseball had a relatively high profile at the time - the New York Giants played the Chicago White Sox at the MCG in 1914).
