In the round just completed, GWS finished with a score lower than 30, this being 4.5 (29), yet it was not the lowest score of the round, this going to North Melbourne's 1.8 (14). The last time this peculiarity happened was round 11, 1989. In this round Brisbane Bears kicked 3.8 (26), yet the lowest score of the round went to Fitzroy who finished with 1.8 (14), the same score as North Melbourne. In both these rounds there was also a score in the 30s which thus had two lower scores preventing it from being the round's lowest total. In 2019 Essendon kicked 4.9 (33) whilst in 1989 it was again Essendon, this time kicking 4.11 (35).

It has since been brought to my attention that I missed two rounds which fit this criteria. I would say what happened was my brain was fixed on finding scores in the teens range when I went researching this on AFL Tables, and I missed seeing two scores in the 20s range occurring in the same round.
Anyway since round 11, 1989, there was round 13 in 1989 when Brisbane Bears kicked 4.11 (35) but two lower scores were kicked by Essendon 3.10 (28) and Footscray 3.5 (23), both in the same game.
Then in round 16, 1996 Melbourne kicked 4.6 (30) but St. Kilda kicked 4.5 (29) and Footscray kicked 3.4 (22).

Not being negative - but with Geelong - im trying to think of the 12 - 100 point plus losses ( its amazing how you remember them - because they sting like bugggery - you lose by 90 it doesnt feel anywhere near as bad as 100 lol )

Ive come up with 5 - since ive been following it

(1) About 3-4 years ago againt Sydney Swans at the SCG 110 points

(2) Collingwood 2006 - just over 100 points

(3) Opening round 1990 GF replay v Haw at Waverley ( 1 pt the difference midway through the 3rd qtr can you believe it )

(4 ) A bit of a guess - mid 70s maybe 75 against Haw Princess Park - Closter kicked the 1st goal - then it was an avalanche - way over 100 pts

(5) 1969 1st semi v Richmond - arguably Geelongs worst ever defeat - about 20 goals

I cant think of any others in that time frame - probably either side of war years there would be some - maybe 57 and 58 when Wooden spooners

That Geelong/Hawthorn 1990 game must be the latest a team has led during a match (Geel 10.6/Haw 9.11, 21:18 remaining 3rd qtr), only to then lose by more than 100 points.

It would be hard to beat, that's for sure! Just looking at quarter by quarter scores, the closest any team that's lost by 100 points or more has been at 3/4 time is (trailing by) 24 points (-34 is next best):
1976 Rd. 19 - St Kilda (-24):
726186

1963 Rd. 14 - Fitzroy (-34):
726187

Neither of those teams (St Kilda 1976, Fitzroy 1963) could have held the lead in the third quarter.

There's been seven games where a team that has lost by 100 points or more has trailed at half-time by 20 points or less. Geelong in that 1990 game (-17) and the two examples above (Fitzroy -7, St Kilda -8) are three such cases. The others are:
1986 Rd. 21 - Geelong (-3):
726185

Geelong might have hit the lead in the third quarter and held it for a while, but it seems very unlikely (even if they did) they'd have beaten their 1990 effort!
Edit: They didn't hit the lead!: https://news.google.com.au/newspapers?nid=MDQ-9Oe3GGUC&dat=19860825&printsec=frontpage&hl=en (page 30)

1961 Rd. 18 - South Melbourne (-16):
726184

1977 Rd. 6 - Essendon (-17):
726183

1947 Rd. 6 - St Kilda (-20):

Heres a trivia question - see if anyone can answer it

That 1977 Foot v Ess game you quoted - where the Bulldogs won by exactly 100 points ( ironic seeing last weekend there was a century plus winning margin to the Dogs over the Dons ) - that 1977 game - something happened - transpired in that game - that the VFL stepped in after that game and brought in a rule change

What was it ?

Not at all sure. Was it something to do with ruck rules?

Nothing to do with the ruck rules - but the VFL were most upset with something that happened in that game - and brought in a rule change because of it

Its a great trivia /quiz question

Was the rule change implemented the following week, or the following season, or at some other stage?

Something went wrong with my computer

The rule change came in the following week

The only other clue i will give - is Geoff Jennings - who was a very talented Footscray player

It has to be something to do with the Footscray players changing their jumpers/numbers, doesn't it (Jennings was one of those who did that)?

Yeah youve got it - the Age article gives it up

The reason i knew - was as my avatar suggests - im a big Billy Goggin fan - and Billy was coach of Footscray at the time - and Billy was street cunning - and he got 4 of the Footscray younger players to play in their wrong jumper numbers to confuse the opposition - well they won by 100 - and it was at Windy Hill !

They couldnt fine him - because there was no rule you couldnt do it - but it would distort Brownlow voting and everything - so they immediately brought in a rule change to make it illegal

Port/Adelaide separated by just 0.00012698624% after the game :)
That's cool.

If they both win by seven points next week, they will finish equal 8th on 100%

Edit

What I was meant to say is that if they both win by the same margin next week, but Adelaide score exactly seven points more, they will finish equal 8th
