VFA team Port Melbourne suffered a frustrating run in 1950-1957, playing in 8 successive Grand Finals but winning just once, an easy 60-point victory over the Yarraville Eagles in 1953. It must have been bad enough losing 3 consecutive Grand Finals to arch rivals Williamstown in 1954, 1955 and 1956, but the 1957 Grand Final would probably have stung the most. Williamstown had dominated the season, going through undefeated and miles out in front at the top of the ladder, but the Seagulls inexplicably lost both finals to crash out in straight sets. This set up a Grand Final between Port Melbourne and Moorabbin, with the Kangaroos having not beaten Port since entering in 1951. Unfortunately for the Borough, the Kangaroos chose Grand Final day 1957 to end this hoodoo, easily winning the premiership by 40 points over an inaccurate Port.

I wonder if there were any Port Melbourne players during this era who played in a number of the lost Grand Finals, but for one reason or another missed the demolition of Yarraville in 1953?

On the subject of Port Melbourne and Grand Finals, Port have made something of a habit of providing teams with their first VFL/VFA Grand Final victory, and this is a list below of all the times this has happened from 1897 onwards. Please note that some of the teams previously won premierships in the VFA Second Division that ran from 1961-1989, but their first premierships in First Division were achieved at the expense of the Borough:

1902 - Richmond Tigers
1929 - Northcote Dragons
1957 - Moorabbin Kangaroos
1965 - Waverley Panthers
1967 - Dandenong Redlegs
1987 - Springvale Scorpions
1993 - Werribee Tigers
2002 - Geelong Cats Reserves
2008 - North Ballarat Roosters

* Actually, the VFA didn't play any finals matches in 1902. The premiership was awarded to the club that finished on top of the ladder, so Richmond's premiership that year didn't involve a grand final win over Port Melbourne
* Northcote was known as the 'Brickfielders' in the '20s. I don't think the 'Dragons' nickname came about until much later.
* Similarly, Springvale was not known as the 'Scorpions' until the early '90s, from memory. I think they went by the rather unimaginative 'Vales' before that.
* VFA Second division ended in 1988.

Trent Nichols played in East Fremantle's premiership team when a West Coast Eagles player in 1992 and played in three successive AFL reserves premierships in 1995 & 1996 for North Melbourne and for Richmond in 1997, but never played in a senior flag team for West Coast or North Melbourne.

Only 5 times in VFL/AFL history has a single player kicked a score of 100 points or more in a match....This has been achieved by 4 players only:

Fred Fanning kicked 18.1.109 in Round 19, 1947.
Jason Dunstall kicked 17.5.107 in Round 7, 1992.
Gordon Coventry kicked 17.4.106 in Round 12, 1930 & 16.5.101 in Round 13, 1929.
Peter McKenna kicked 16.4.100 in Round 19,1969.

Kelvin Templeton came close kicking 15.9.99 in Round 13, 1978.
Peter Hudson kicked 16.1.97 in Round 5, 1969.
Tony Lockett kicked An incredibly Accurate 16.0.96 in Round 19,1995.

Templeton's 15.9 remains the highest aggregate scoring shots record, for A single player in A match, with 24.

North Melbourne have achieved nothing for two decades.

This may sound like a harsh and blunt statement but the reality is that the Kangaroos have not made any additions to their trophy cabinet for 20 years, either for the team or individual players.

North last made the grand final in 1999, so they obviously have never won a premiership or finished runner up since then. They have not headed the ladder since 1998, so no McLelland trophy for winning the minor premiership. The night or pre-season premiership has not been held since 2013, but North did not win one of these after 1998. At the other end of the scale North Melbourne have not finished last for decades, so no wooden spoons either.

On the individual front, the last Kangaroo players to win any major awards are as follows. Brownlow Medal - Ross Glendinning 1983. Coleman Medal (leading goal kicker) - John Longmire 1990. AFL Rising Star - Byron Pickett 1998. Norm Smith Medal - Shannon Grant 1999.

It is very rare for a team not to win any team or individual awards in a decade. Richmond was one example in the 1990s, but North have done it in both the 2000s and 2010s.

Continuing on with the goal-kicking theme:

George Maloney of Geelong was the first player to kick 10 goals or more in consecutive matches during the 1932 season….In Round 15 he kicked 10.11 vs Melbourne out at Corio Oval in Geelong....He then followed that up with 11.10 against Fitzroy in Round 16 the following week, at the same venue.

Others to have achieved the same feat are:

Bob Pratt of South Melb, in 1933...Kicked 10.5 vs Nth Melb in Round 11 at Arden street . Then followed it up in Round 12 with 11.5 vs Carlton at the Lake Oval.

Bob Pratt then achieved the feat twice in 1934 (The year he kicked 150 goals to set the record), kicking 10.6 vs Carlton in Round 2 at Princess Park & 15.3 vs Essendon in Round 3 at the Lake Oval.

He then followed it up by kicking 10 or more 3 times on the Trot....First in round 13 vs Carlton kicking 11.3 at the Lake Oval. He then kicked 11.5 vs Essendon in Round 14 out at Windy Hill & then 12.2 vs Footscray in Round 15 at the Lake Oval....Bombers & Blues fans must have been having nightmares about him that year.

Ron Todd achieved the feat in Rounds 5 & 6 of 1938, kicking 11.5 vs Carlton at Victoria Park, then 10.4 vs North out at Arden Street.

Fred Fanning in rounds 18 & 19 of 1947, kicked 10.4 vs Footscray out at the Whitten Oval, followed by 18.1 vs the Saints at the Junction Oval.

The great John Coleman then matched Bob Pratts' feat of kicking 10 goals in 3 consecutive matches at the beginning of 1953. Kicking 10.2 vs Fitzroy at Windy Hill in Round 1, 11.4 vs Sth. Melb out at the Lake Oval in Round 2, then 10 straight vs the Saints at Windy Hill in Round 3.

Peter McKenna in Rounds 13 & 14 of 1971, kicked 10.4 vs Richmond at Victoria Park, then 12.5 vs Essendon at the same venue the following week.

In 1991 Tony Lockett joined Pratt & Coleman in kicking 10 or more 3 times in a row, in rounds 7-9 of that year. He kicked 12.6 vs Adelaide at Moorabbin in Round 7, followed by 10.3 vs Brisbane at the Gabba, then 12.2 vs Sydney at the S.C.G....He then joined Pratt in kicking another 10 goals 2 weeks running twice in the one season, in kicking 13.3 vs Carlton in Round 21 out at Waverley, then 10.6 in Round 22 vs Adelaide at Football Park.

in 1994 Jason Dunstall kicked 10.1 vs Footscry out at Waverley in round 11. Then in Round 12, he kicked 11.3 vs Sydney at the S.C.G.

Phenomenal to my mind, to think that Peter Hudson never achieved the feat.

The most bags of 10 goals or more in a single season by a single player, belongs to Tony Lockett with 6 in 1991.
Bob Pratt kicked 5 bags of 10 or more in 1934.
Gary Ablett snr kicked 5 bags in 1993.
John Coleman kicked 4 bags in 1953.
Peter McKenna kicked 4 bags in both 1971 & 1972.
Jason Dunstall kicked 4 Bags in 1992.

The most bags of 10 goals or more kicked in a single season is an incredible 16 in 1993, shared between 9 players.. Ablett 5, Dunstall 1, Lockett 1, Modra 3, Rocca 2, Salmon 1, Osborne 1, McAdam 1, Silvagni 1....In fact, in rounds 6 & 16 of that year, 3 players kicked 10 or more goals in both rounds....This has only ever occurred on 2 occasions prior...In round 17 of 1931 & in Round 11 of 1933.

Other prolific seasons for kicking 10 goals or more are' 1991 with 11 instances, 1992 with 9 bags of 10, 1990 & 1994 with 8 bags of 10 each & 1989 with 7....The zenith of the Lockett, Dunstall, Ablett era.

1971 saw 9 bags of 10 goals kicked, there were 8 in 1972 & 6 in 1970.....The Hudson, McKenna, Wade era.

There was a spike of 6 & 5 in 1950 & 1953 respectively, representing the Coleman era.

9 bags of 10 goals or more were kicked in 1933, 7 bags in 1934 & 6 in 1931; Representing the Coventry, Pratt era.

1993 certainly appears to be a season out of the box....Odd considering there was only 20 H&A games played that year....that season is A real anomoly.

Three times in losing sides!

Not only for goalkicking. Look at the Brownlow medal.

Can anyone seriously imagine now a back pocket winning with only 18 votes. Or that non-midfielders could possibly fill 3 of the top 5 places.

Sadly with the combination of superstar hype, justified or not (and they're almost all midfielders to begin with), and the greater focus on numbers instead of influence, I can't see a non-midfielder triumphing any time soon.

Great point. That big a season for full-forwards and a back pocket wins the Brownlow!

Prior to the First World War, the ten VFL teams would play a full round of fixtures on the Saturday of the King's Birthday Long Weekend in early June, then another full round of fixtures on the Monday. I wonder how the modern day players would react to such a schedule for the Queen's Birthday Long Weekend?

In 1912, South Melbourne players, officials and fans would have had a fair sense of de ja vu, with the Swans beating University in the Saturday game by 32-points, then defeating Geelong by 32-points in the Monday game. And the 1914 King's Birthday Long Weekend was an absolute nightmare for University, with the black and blues thrashed by Melbourne by 47-points at the MCG on the Saturday, then destroyed by Fitzroy by 84 points two days later.

There has only ever been 2 seasons in VFL/AFL history where 3 players have notched up the tonne in one year:

In 1970 Hudson bagged 146 goals, McKenna 143 & Jesaulenko 115; For A combined total of 404 goals from 22 H&A games plus finals....Jezza finished 3rd in Brownlow votes with 20, while Hudson polled 14 votes in equal 10th spot, & McKenna finished with 11 votes in 12th place.

In 1993 Modra bagged 129 goals, Ablett 124 & Dunstall 123; For A combined total of 376 goals from 20 H&A games plus finals. Dunstall finished in equal 4th spot with Carey on 16 votes, Ablett equal 9th place with 13 votes & Modra 15th place with 11 votes.

McKenna's 143 goals in 1970, remains the highest total not to win the Coleman medal....It is still the 5th highest total in the game's history...He Also kicked 134 in 1971 to finish the bridesmaid to Hudson's 150 yet again, with the 7th highest tally ever.....Hudson finished equal 2nd in the Brownlow of 1971 on 18 votes....Lockett's 132 in 1992 saw him finish runner up to Dunstalls' 145, with the 9th highest goal tally ever....Dunstall finished runner-up on 18 votes in the Brownlow that year.

1933 & 1934 were the first 2 seasons in which 2 players - in Bob Pratt & Gordon Coventry - notched up the tonne in the same year....Neither player finished in the Top 10 votes for the Brownlow that year....In 1934, where Pratt kicked 150 at the phenomenal average of 7.1 goals per game, he finished 8th in the voting with 13 votes....absolutely mind-boggling.

Tony Lockett's 1991 season remains the most phenomenal goal-kicking season ever. Where he kicked 127 goals from 17 games at the rate of 7.5 goals per game....He had 6 bags of 10 or more goals & got 16 votes in the Brownlow finishing in equal 8th spot, after missing the first 6 games of that seson.
