Any other sides be so lop-sided from the old 'phone book' split like this?

Carlton's team of 18 in R6 1902 begins with Joe Marr.

Next "latest" first names are Herring, Healing, Hart, Harding & Hamilton.

In modern times the latest start is Adam Goodes in R16 2011.

- - - - -

St.Kilda's teams in R1 & R7 1915 ended at Harry Moyes.

Next are O'Brien, O'Halloran, Orchard, O'Rourke, Outram & Owen.

Earliest end to the alphabetic order in modern times is Darcy Parish, R16 2016.

On the subject of player surnames, I was curious if there have been any club lists or even particular games that feature a number of players with surnames starting with the less common letters I, Q, U, X, Y & Z?

That's amazing, thanks Ron the Bear. I was curious about the Q/U/Z combination which came up only once, do you have any details on which game this was?

North would have had a handful of games with Zurhaar and Ziebell i'm sure. Essendon with Zerk-Thatcher and Zaharakis.

There has obviously never been a football game played on Halloween (31st October), but if there ever was one by the scores this match between St. Kilda and Carlton in Round 10 2004 would be perfect:

St. Kilda 31.10-196 d. Carlton 13.10-88
Had me check, what is the latest game in the season a game has been played

Before today
October 20 1923

So yeah, never a halloween game

But it made me wonder
October premiers. Will it be Collingwood

7 of the last 8 flags have been won by a Rioli in the team.

Is there another surname that has a better record across 8 years than this?

Neesham 7 in 11 years in the WAFL 83-93 is pretty good for one person [Gerard]. Best in an 8 year patch was 5.

Shame he couldn't bring that to Freo.

Johnson (6) the next best 1997-03. There were two Johnsons in 2000, so 7 individual medals in 7 years.

Plenty of 5's at Melbourne through the Norm Smith era

Adams 1955-60
Barassi 1955-60
Beckwith 1955-60
Hart 1997-03
Johnson 1904-08
Johnson 1955-60 (3 Johnsons in 1960, 7 in total)
Johnson 2000-07 (2 Johnsons in 2000, 6 in total)
Kennedy 1983-89
Lord 1957-64 (2 Lords in 1963, 6 in total)

There have been AFL players with every letter of the alphabet, but when was the last time there was a premiership player with a surname for each letter?

As per the list below, 20 have occurred from 2015 onwards, 1 letter a little way back in 2012, 3 letters not for many years and 2 never:

A 2020
B 2020
C 2020
D 2018
E 2020
F 2015
G 2020
H 2020
I 1977
J 2018
K 2018
L 2020
M 2020
N 2020
O 2012
P 2020
Q 1968
R 2020
S 2020
T 2017
U None
V 2020
W 2016
X None
Y 2018
Z 1934

If you were curious, the players for the letters that haven't come up for a while are Steven Icke (North Melbourne 1977), Ryan O'Keefe (Sydney Swans 2012), Bryan Quirk (Carlton 1968) and Eric Zesch (Richmond 1934). Zesch, who was also a Tigers' premiership player in 1932, has the distinction of being the only player whose surname started with Z to play in a premiership team.

Another interesting fact about Zschech's career is that the four consecutive grand finals he appeared in between 1931 and 1934 resulted in alternating wins and losses - 1931 (loss), 1932 (win), 1933 (loss) and 1934 (win). Has any other played done this?

You would need to be looking at teams who had sustained periods of grand final appearances to get consecutive alternations. Surely there are players from North Melbourne's 1970s teams when they had 1974 (lost), 1975 (won,) 1976 (lost), 1977 (won) and 1978 (lost).
In recent times Lance Franklin went 2008 (won), 2012 (lost), 2013 (won), 2014 (lost) but they were not four consecutive years.

Hawthorn went loss, win, loss, win from 1985-1988.
Without going over the teams in detail, I would be fairly confident that at least these players were in each GF:
Tuck, Mew, Ayres, Dipper, Brereton, Langford, Greene, Kennedy.

Tom Hickey was today traded from the West Coast Eagles to Sydney, and as soon as he plays his debut match for the Swans next year he will become the first player to have played senior AFL football in four different states, Hickey having previously played for the Gold Coast in their early years and then St Kilda.

There have been a number of players who have played for clubs in three different states, but never four.
