I noticed that both the 2nd and 3rd quarters of the Lions match on the weekend went for over 35 minutes, which made me think –

What is the longest match by minutes played?

Well, technically, the famous St Kilda-Essendon 'Lights-out' game started on Sunday 8th June at 7.40 pm and finished at about 8.15pm on the following Tuesday night. There was about 46+ hours of time-on added during the 3rd quarter.

Brilliant.

Obvious detailed follow-up question -

Has any player had a higher consonant-to-vowel ratio in his surname than Eric Zschech (6-1)?

And extra bonus question - how was it pronounced?

Mick McGlynn and his younger brother Ben McGlynn hold the record here with 7-0. Mick played with Geelong in 1946 while Ben played his first senior game 60 years later.

Jeff Hogg, who played for Richmond (1986-1993) and Fitzroy (1994-1996) had a winning record at only one venue, the Sydney Cricket Ground, where he had a 4-3 record with the Tigers, but never played for the Lions against the Swans in Sydney. He never played in winning matches in Perth or Adelaide, and just once in Queensland at Carrara, all other games played against the Bears in Brisbane or on the Gold Coast were in losing teams.

Hope ive got the right poster ( apologies if i havent ) but you would be delirious after last night wouldnt you - because South Melbourne have beaten Geelong yet again in a very tight finish - with yet again a bizarre ending to the game ( non mark to Cameron )

There is a set of about 9-10 games now - list them out again for us will you - their interesting reading - even though the Cats lost the lot of them - hah

One interesting thing about Geelong and South Melbourne/Sydney, is that although the Cats and Swans have played plenty of thrillers over the years like last night which went Sydney's way and a 2020 game that went Geelong's way, never once has there ever been a drawn game between these teams. They remain the only eight foundation clubs that have never played a tie against each other, all others have drawn at least once including Fitzroy.

Some interesting stats arose between Geelong and South in the early-mid 1970s. The Swans mostly struggled from 1971-1975, but gave the Cats a lot of trouble in these years. In 1972, one of the 11th placed Swans 2 victories for the season was over the Cats early in the season. In 1973, the Swans were last with a 4-18 record, and from 1972-1973 had put together a 29 game losing streak, the longest since the Second World War. South broke their run of outs by crushing Geelong 18.15-123 to 12.6-78 at the Lake Oval. In 1974 the Swans improved to 9th and had a 9-12-1 record, and the results between Geelong and South saw a 1-point victory both times, Geelong winning at Kardinia Park, the Swans at the Lake Oval. In 1975 South slipped back to last with a 2-20 record like 1972. The Swans' only two victories that year were both at the expense of the Cats.

David Bain, who played for the Brisbane Bears from 1989-1993 and at Fitzroy in 1994 won best and fairest awards at high level competition in three different leagues. In 1988, he won the Sandover Medal playing for East Perth in the WAFL. In 1994 in his sole season for Fitzroy, he took out the Gardiner Medal for the AFL Reserves Best and Fairest. Returning to Queensland, Bain then won two Grogan Medals for the Southport Sharks in the QAFL in 1995 and 1999. He was also fourth in the 1990 Brownlow Medal, impressive given the Bears finished last that season.

The last three times a team has begun a season with at least 8 losses, it has been Hawthorn against whom the losing streak has been broken.

2021 North Melbourne began 0-8, then defeated Hawthorn by 7 points in round 9 (after Hawthorn had led by 32 during the second quarter).
2020 Adelaide began 0-13, then defeated Hawthorn by 35 points in round 15.
2018 Brisbane Lions began 0-8, then defeated Hawthorn by 56 points in round 9.

Prior to this Fremantle had begun 2016 with a 0-10 record before snapping their streak by defeating Essendon by 79 points in round 11.
The century began with Fremantle going 0-17 in 2001 before defeating Hawthorn by 16 points in round 18 (after Hawthorn had led by 41 during the second quarter).

Three of the four field umpires in last week's Geelong/Gold Coast game were named Nick. (Foot, Brown, and debutant Jankovskis). The odd man out was Alex Whetton.

Geelong is the 100th team to lose their next match after winning by 100+.

Lies.
Does this ignominious record go to the Bulldogs now Ron? Lost to Melbourne the week after smashing the hapless saints by 111 points??

Given most of the foundation clubs have had over 1000 players, and the Dogs, Hawks and North the same essentially that seems rather under the odds for the ages. There'd have been a few young ones killed in the two world wars of course. Poor John McCarthy....he's born after the likes of Tom Hawkins and Joel Selwood. Passed away by misadventure in that 2012 off-season. But as a segment of society in general, it seems like the average footballer seems to not live quite as long as a non-player, blokes average life expectancy would be mid 70's?

Think it's up to about 78.

I've got six players down as living to 99. Maybe someone has reached 100 and is still alive, but it's hard to tell since some DOD's are missing.

The top three of course were latecomers and benefit from a higher standard of living. This is een even more clearly in the low figure for University, whose last surviving player died in 1986. Low figures for the newer clubs are due to random early deaths.

A lot of University players died during WWI, and no doubt that really damages their average. 21 (out of an all-time total of 112 players) died 1915-1919.
