A mate and I were just having a discussion over the batting equivalent of a 7 wicket haul, and I am of the opinion that a haul of 7 is the equivalent of a double ton.

Does anyone have any double century to 7 wicket haul stats handy?

In tests:

190 different players have taken 7 wickets in an innings. Murali did it 11 times. All up it has been done 332 times

165 players have scored Double centuries. The Don did it 12 times. All up it has been done 306 times

Can't compare it. Because a bowler has the opportunity to bowl for as long as they want.

Herath's 7 is comparable to Mathews' ton at a strike rate of sub-40.

Just disgraceful by Sri Lanka, considering they were in a winning position, and needed the win to not lose the series.

The other point is SOMEONE has to pick up the wickets. If you bowl long enough, eventually the batsmen will get bored and get themselves out. There are always 10 wickets to be had. The opposite is that there are only 10 wickets - if your mate gets a bag, it leaves fewer for you.

I always thought Hadlee got a lot of his wickets purely because he was the only NZ bowler capable of getting them.

I could probably get a test wicket if I bowled long enough - someone would mishit one of my nude nuts and be cought on the boundary. But no way I could make 10 runs in test cricket - I couldn't nick them all through 2nd slip's legs.

double ton seems about right.

but just like we dismiss 200's on roads, we dismiss 7fa if they bowl 50 overs and get belted for 160.

Its a bit of both re: Hadlee. Ditto Murali, which is why most i think put warne > Murali because of the competition warne had for those wickets.

Thanks Jed.:thumbsu:

It seems as though, at least statistically, I have made a fair call.

Is anyone up for a crack at 8 fors and 250's and 9 fors and 300's?

I will put Laker and Kumbles 10 wicket haul efforts on a par with Laras 400.

Richard Hadlee got a lot of wickets because he's a top 5 seamer ever.

Hadlee was a genius.

In fact, forget seamers, he'd be close to a top 10 bowler of all time.

Whenever I saw Hadlee play, most of the crowd seemed keen to voice the opinion that he was a w***er.

I love this. There are times I do not get a wicket at indoor cricket against flogs. There are times when bowling long long spells in the nets, I don't get a wicket against mates. Test players would annihilate me.

I remember at high school, Greg Shipperd was a phys ed teacher. He was playing for WA at the time and one lunchtime, he offered to pay $10 or something to anyone that could get him out. Everybody had to pay 50cents a bowl and it raised money for some charity. He would have been the slowest batsman in world cricket but he hit almost every delivery into the bush that surrounded the school oval. One of the guys bowling to him would have been a year 12 who ended up playing grade cricket and even a bit of semi pro stuff in the Yorkshire league (and knocked out my brother's front teeth with a cricket ball) but he never looked like getting Shipperd out. And this was all while he was playing a shot to every ball.

He scored a hundred that year against the West Indies so he was in pretty good form, but it is not like he was putting his immaculate forward and backward defence into use.

It's interesting that at our cricket club we present awards for centuries at Presentation Night and also for 7 fors. The balance is far and away in favour of centuries in regards to how many are presented.

Pretty much.

I bowled in the practice nets to one Victorian state player and my claim to fame is that I got him to play and miss one delivery.
