Robert Murphy has joined the list of captains who missed a premiership due to injury.

The others I have on this list are:

2004 - Matthew Primus (Port Adelaide)
1977 - Keith Greig (North Melbourne)
1958 - Frank Tuck (Collingwood)

Any others to add?

Josh Kennedy collected the most possessions in Saturday's grand final (34). How many other grand finals do we know of where the player with the most possessions did not play on the winning team?

That is nuts. 119 point loss and the three highest possession totals. Port also had more handballs than Geelong in total.

In round 14, 1977 Hawthorn kicked a score of 48 versus Carlton. Next round they kicked a score of 191 versus Geelong. Is this increase of 143 in scores a record for one team from one round to the next?

What would be the biggest drop in games experience from a team from one game to the next? Obviously this would have to be one year to another but this Kangaroos side would surely set a record next season.

Thanks Ron the Bear for the above info. Would it be possible to make a table showing the highest score increase for each club?

The thing I love about tables like the above is always seeing the Richmond records coming from before 1980 :D

I'm rather surprised that Geelong's biggest rise didn't happen in the era from '87 onwards, when about 75% of Geelong's highest scores have been kicked.

Geelong's lowest might be 123 when going from 191 to 68, Rd 9 and 10 1992.

Who has the most games but no statistics?

And has there been a player who's kicked a goal with their first, and eventually only kick in football? If there has been, what's the most goals for a kick:goal ratio of 1:1?

Anyone out there interested in putting their Statistical nous to good use, and help a club develop their young players through the use of stats? Just need to watch the Saturday game, and give report to Coach. Not a lot of time commitment volunteering, but very useful for the club, and could help out for someone who is keen to go into this field, and needs somewhere to practice their skills.

Sam Mitchell was been awarded the Brownlow Medal today. Have any players won a Brownlow medal with a club but never played as a Brownlow medallist for that club?

EDIT: found them, Graham Moss (ESS 1976) went back to WA and did not play another game of VFL

Brian Gleeson (STK 1957) was appointed captain for 1958, but injured a knee in a practice match and never played VFL football again.

Col Austen (HAW 1949*) was given a clearance to Richmond after a huge internal split occurred before the 1950 season.

* awarded retrospectively in 1989

In 1991, the West Coast Eagles started their season with a 14.15-99 to 2.8-20 demolition job on Melbourne. The massive percentage from this game, coupled with a 12 game winning streak ensured the Eagles the rare accomplishment of heading the ladder every round of the season.

Six years later, no fewer than 7 teams headed the ladder at some stage during the very even 1997 season; the West Coast Eagles, Adelaide Crows, Geelong, St Kilda, Western Bulldogs, Collingwood and Essendon all took top position for at least one week that year.

At the other end of the scale, Melbourne began the 2008 season with a 104-point thrashing from eventual premiers Hawthorn, and subsequently spent the entire season on the bottom of the ladder and claiming the wooden spoon. There are a few other wooden spooners to have been last every week of the season like the 2008 Demons; University in 1913, Hawthorn in 1950, St Kilda in 1985 and technically the 1993 Sydney Swans, which had an opening round bye but was last on the ladder for every week from Round 2 onwards.

Conversely, seasons where quite a number of different teams spent time at the bottom of the ladder where harder to find. The most I could find was 5 in 1957, where Collingwood, South Melbourne, North Melbourne and Geelong were all last at one stage during the season. Ironically, the Cats did not find last place until defeat in the last round of the season sent the 1957 wooden spoon to Kardinia Park.

Does anyone have more examples of teams that headed the ladder every week for the season, teams that were last every week during the season, seasons that saw quite a number of different teams in first position and seasons where 5 or more teams spent at last one week in last position?

NB These may be affected by the way I calculate my ladders. I have a ladder calculated for each day on which one or more matches were played, with a flag (1 or 0) to indicate whether the round was complete. The above is calculated using only ladders where the round is complete, so if there is a situation such as 1987 R16-18 where the dates are scrambled, a team may have sat on the bottom (or top) during the week but not be recorded in my numbers. Early years where single matches were postponed until later in the year might also be affected.

I was aware of WCE of 91 and Essendon of 2000 being on top for the entire season.

Bulldogs were on top of the ladder for 15 rounds in 1998, and for the remaining seven rounds they were second.

Missing from 'led all season' is Geelong 1953.
(Geelong was top of the ladder after each round from round 12 1952 to round 18 1953.)
