NB These may be affected by the way I calculate my ladders. I have a ladder calculated for each day on which one or more matches were played, with a flag (1 or 0) to indicate whether the round was complete. The above is calculated using only ladders where the round is complete, so if there is a situation such as 1987 R16-18 where the dates are scrambled, a team may have sat on the bottom (or top) during the week but not be recorded in my numbers. Early years where single matches were postponed until later in the year might also be affected.

Thanks Ron The Bear - I was amazed to find out that 6 teams were last at some stage of 2004, from memory Hawthorn and Richmond were down the bottom for most of that year.

From memory, Essendon, Geelong and Collingwood were on the bottom too.

Adelaide may've been (Round 4 I think.)

Does anyone know the players who hold the following records?

1. Most games played without playing in a premiership team but never played in a wooden spoon team.
2. Most games played without a Grand Final appearance but never played in a wooden spoon team.
3. Most games played without a finals appearance but never played in a wooden spoon team.

Think the answers are

1. Paul Roos (356)
2. Barry Round (328)
3. Ivan McAlpine (179)

Hi Ron the Bear - thanks - that was a quick response!

You wouldn't happen to know the inverse of these i.e.:

1. The least number of games to play in both a premiership team and a wooden spoon team
2. The least number of games to play in both a grand final and a wooden spoon team
3. The least number of games to play a finals game and a wooden spoon side.

In round 23 of 1992, West Coast kicked a total score of two points in its opening three quarters against Footscray. In addition to that, the Eagles didn't kick their first goal until the 20th minute mark of the final term.

Are there any other examples of teams winning the premiership in a season where they are held goalless for three consecutive quarters in any game during the season?

I found one from Round 1 1901:

Collingwood 3.2 3.4 7.7 9.10-64 d. Essendon 0.4 0.6 0.10 1.15-21

The others are

1897 R6 Es 0.3 0.6 0.11 1.13 d. SM
1898 R7 Fi 0.1 0.7 0.7 2.10 l. SM
1923 R10 Es 0.2 0.5 0.8 1.12 l. St

No cases of going goalless in the last three quarters (but four instances for runners-up).

Thanks, guys. Legends!

1923 to 1992 is certainly a long time between drinks.

I got to experince this on a personal level when I played in a premiership in Under 12s in 1998. We lost one game for the entire year, which was in the final home and away game. We were scoreless at 3/4 time before kicking a couple of goals in the final qtr.

Geelong are involved in two of football's best known scoring anomalies.

In 1980, the Cats topped the ladder to take minor premiers, but their feline cousins the Fitzroy Lions were wooden spooners and had a higher points for than Geelong.

In 1932, Geelong were reigning premiers and showed no signs of a premiership hangover. The Cats had the highest points for and the best percentage (139.7) in the league, yet somehow missed the finals that year. Interestingly, the third feline team, the Richmond Tigers, took out the premiership both in 1932 & 1980.

I know that the 1980 season where the wooden spooner had a higher points for than the minor premier and the 1932 season where the team with the highest percentage misses the finals are one off and have never take place before or since; however are there any other cases where the highest scoring team of the season missed the finals like the 1932 Cats team?

Technically a case could be made for Geelong of 1899 being the highest scoring team and missing the finals, even though they finished second on the ladder. That season there was only one official final played, that being the grand final between Fitzroy and South Melbourne. Geelong had the most points scored both after the 14 home and away games and also after the Sectional matches.
Apart from that peculiarity, the following teams have been the highest scoring teams of the season but have not made the finals, all under the final four system. In 1949 and 1968 there were two teams who outscored those who qualified for the finals.

season | club | ladder position | points for | next highest scoring team | ladder position | points for
\1913|Geelong|5th|1264|South Melbourne|2nd|1256
\1914|St Kilda|7th|1243|Fitzroy|3rd|1177
\1932|Geelong|5th|1825|Carlton|1st|1803
\1936|Geelong|5th|1884|Carlton|3rd|1877
\1948|Richmond|5th|1895|Essendon|1st|1838
\1949|Richmond|6th|1733|Carlton|2nd|1679
\1949|Geelong|8th|1722|Carlton|2nd|1679
\1951|Richmond|6th|1551|Essendon|3rd|1530
\1968|Hawthorn|6th|1934|Essendon|1st|1860
\1968|Richmond|5th|1889|Essendon|1st|1860

Similarly, are the Bulldogs of 1955 the only team to miss the finals having the lowest points against?

Apart from Geelong's circumstances of the 1899 season as alluded to above, the following teams have had the lowest Points Against totals but not qualified for the finals.

season | club | ladder position | points against | next lowest "points against" team | ladder position | points against
\1929|Geelong|7th|1082|Collingwood|1st|1117
\1939|Carlton|5th|1459|Richmond|3rd|1469
\1944|Carlton|5th|1259|Fitzroy|2nd|1280
\1946|Fitzroy|8th|1339|Essendon|1st|1407
\1955|Footscray|5th|1018|Melbourne|1st|1036

In 1997, the Bulldogs won 14 H&A games, plus one final.

Of their 15 wins, their greatest winning margin was 45 points.

Are there any examples of teams playing in a Preliminary Final (or finishing top four) where their greatest winning margin of the season was as small as 45 points?

Similarly, what examples do we have of teams finishing in the top four with a percentage as low as 101.8?

In 1958, North Melbourne finished fourth with an 11-7 record and a very low percentage of 92.7, but the Kangaroos won the first semi final against Fitzroy before going under to eventual premiers Collingwood by 20 points in the preliminary final. That year the Bulldogs finished second last with a 6-12 record, but their percentage of 97.3 was better than that of North, while Essendon and Hawthorn finished fifth & sixth respectively, with respective percentages of 111.3 & 109.3.

I remember the 1997 Bulldogs team having something of a hoodoo with the interstate teams, losing narrowly to Port Adelaide and Fremantle (twice) and suffering some heavy defeats at the hands of the Adelaide Crows, Brisbane Lions and Sydney Swans, these big losses a factor in the Dogs' low percentage.

Who would be the top ten players for the most games played without having played in 100 winning games?

And how about the top ten most career games without having played in 100 losing games?

Looking at *Paul's AFL tables page, the following players have less than 100 defeats in careers of over 300 games.

In number of wins order
Player Name...................Win...Draw....Loss.....Tot
Shaun Burgoyne...............220.....1.........98......319
Gordon Coventry..............220.....5.........81......306
Jimmy Bartel...................213.....3.........89......305
Chris Langford..................205.....2........96......303
Francis Bourke.................202.....3.........95......300
Kelvin Moore....................201.....0.........99......300

FWIW, Joel Selwood so far has 175 wins, one draw and just 52 losses, so he might join this group if his body stands up for four more seasons.

Robert Flower played 272 games, of which only 88 were victories, with no draws.
Geoff Cunningham is a mirror image of Selwood, with 52 wins, two draws and 170 losses.
Nathan Jones of current players has just 58 wins and three draws from his 223 career games so far.

What about most winningest Giant and biggest loser?

50 games min played.

Shane Mumford has the best win percentage as a Giant, with 29 wins from 51 games at 56.86%

Heath Shaw with 34 wins, 30 losses, and Josh Kelly, 30 wins and 30 losses are the only other 50+ game Giants to have a 50% or better win loss percentage.

Jonathon Giles participated in just five victories in his 51-game Giants career, and Curtly Hampton played in eight wins out of his 51 games as Giant.

Luke Power (2-18) and Taylor Adams (3-28) are the only two Giants having played 20 or more games to not exceed a win percentage of 10%.

And the following players played between 10 and 15 games for the Giants without singing the team song, in descending order of games..

Stephen Gilham (0-15), James McDonald (0-13), Sam Darley (0-13), Shaun Edwards (0-12) and Jed Lamb (0-10).

Not really a statistical question as such, but of the statistical gurus around here, which of you are planning on keeping records on AFLW statistics? Would be nice to know what resources are out there.
