Stats questions

Well, it's knowledge of history more than anything (or lack of it as some may describe it...) to key you in more fully - the game in Round 18 last year was Western Bulldogs v St. Kilda...

Does that give it away yet?
Not really but my head is ****ed at the moment so I'm not in the right frame of mind to think of it.

I see you're also a St. Kilda supporter like me, so I'll fill you in.

Of the 16 games in the 1960s for this stat, St. Kilda were involved in 16 of them, North Melbourne 10 of them, South Melbourne 4 of them and Hawthorn 2 of them.

The team's records were.

St. Kilda P16 W14 L2
North Melbourne P10 W1 L9
South Melbourne P4 W0 L4
Hawthorn P2 W1 L1

It's games in which the combined Premiership drought is 100 Years Plus.
Surprisingly enough, the Saints had a great record in these games in the 60s.

One of the few stats we do well in! (Another one is - Average size of Finals Crowds - Saints 1st in that one).

Damn it I thought it was something to do with premiership droughts.... lol

What is the highest score kicked by both teams in the same quarter of the same game? For example, in the second quarter of round 22, 1984, Essendon kicked 7.1 (43) and North Melbourne kicked 6.7 (43).

I don't want to jinx it, but there is a very strong chance that one of the longest AFL droughts may break this year and we will see a finals series containing both Melbourne and Richmond for the first time since 1941.

If this does happen and the Demons and Tigers play finals in the same season for the first time in 76 years, which will now be the longest drought of two clubs appearing the same finals series?

With all the attention on the teams in the finals, it has almost been overlooked that at the other end of the ladder a very rare event is happening. This is a wooden spoon 'grand final', where the loser of the game will take the wooden spoon.

This game is the Brisbane Lions vs. North Melbourne game at the GABBA, and the loser of this match will be the team to finish on the bottom of the ladder and collect the 2017 wooden spoon.

I can only name two other final round wooden spoon grand finals, and interestingly both involved the Brisbane Lions' predecessors, and all take place exactly 30 years apart. In 1987, Richmond and the Brisbane Bears met in the final round at the MCG, the Bears handing the wooden spoon to the Tigers with a big win in a high scoring game. In 1957, Fitzroy's win over the inaccurate Geelong in the last round match at Brunswick Street saw the Lions climb off the bottom of the ladder and consign the Cats to the wooden spoon. Will Brisbane make it the trifecta send North to bottom place for the first time since 1972? Time will tell.

Can anybody name any more games that were last round wooden spoon grand finals?

Richmond (14th) played Sydney (15th) on Friday night in R24 1992. Had Richmond lost, it would've left us equal with Brisbane on four wins, with Brisbane to play the following day. As it turned out, Richmond won, Brisbane lost and Sydney got the spoon.

Geelong defeated St.Kilda in the last round of 1945, drawing level with the Saints on two wins and condemning them to the spoon on percentage.

Collingwood defeated Hawthorn in the last round of 1942 after both teams entered the match with one win apiece.

Hawthorn pipped Essendon by five points to avoid the spoon in the last round of 1933.

St.Kilda beat Essendon by two points in the last round of 1921 to dodge the spoon by half a game.

Assuming Essendon beats Fremantle...

Richmond/St.Kilda (1973) is the answer. Next is Port/Bulldogs (1999).

Thanks Ron the Bear for this and the longest finals series drought info.

One long drought was Fitzroy and St Kilda, which after playing off in the 1913 Grand Final never played in the same finals series again in the next 83 years. Somewhat ironically, the Brisbane Lions played St Kilda in a final in 1997, the first year of the merged club.

Have any players begun their career by playing in a 100 point victory and also finished their career by playing in a 100 point victory? I see Peter Daicos went close by starting with a 178 point win and finishing with a 92 point win.
Conversely, have any players begun their career by playing in a 100 point defeat and also finished their career by playing in a 100 point defeat?

Has there been a season where more than the 17 grounds used this year for Premiership Pts?

Just in case people wanted to know the 17 for this year...
