Which player holds the record for the most games in a complete VFL/AFL career without playing a game at the MCG?

It would have to be an interstate team player, obviously.....I'd plump for the West Coast Eagles, but no idea who the player would be.

Does anyone know the best undefeated record in history by one player against a team?

Probably one of the Collingwood players against Hawthorn, given we never won a game against them from our league inception in 1925, on up until 1941....So 29 games in total, across 17 seasons....It also took us until 1938 to knock off Carlton for the first time, which included 25 games, across 14 seasons.

You'd reckon there'd be a player in among there, who played in the majority of those games.

Gordon Coventry and Harry Collier both went 21-0 against Hawthorn

No....22 rounds where each side played each other twice, with Melbourne & Richmond co-tenants.....Very unlikely in my books.

I think it is most likely a player in the VFL era pre-1965. Richmond became a co-tenet in 1965 with Melbourne being the only home team at the MCG before then.

Also, no games were played at the MCG from 1942-45 because of World War 2, when the ground was used as an army base. In fact, the MCG was not used again until Round 17 in 1946, with Melbourne playing home games at Punt Road until then.

The most likelycandidate for most games played without playing at the MCG is a player whose career spanned World War 2.

Can anyone come up with a likelihood percentage of the Miracle on Grass happening? As in, the number of games where a 52 point deficit has been overcome divided by the number of games where it hasn’t?

I can’t seem to find records online for margins mid game, only end game.

Mid-game margins don't exist pre-2001

Thank you for this, super interesting.

At the 25th minute of the third quarter, according to this guy's algorithm, the Lions had a 0.47% chance of winning the game and that was the lowest it was all night. So I guess in other words, if you played out the remainder of that game 213(ish) different times, the Lions would only come back in one of those games.

* premiership player

Most for a player outside the late 1930's/1940's is 43 by Geelong's Vin Maguire (1915-19). Of interest is Karl Amon's run of 42 games, which is a chance to be broken as he's still on Port's list.

Modern times - match #56 by Koby Stevens (WC/WB/St).

When did we have the first father and son play for same club in league history?
I thought I heard it was late 1940's but find it hard to believe it took over four decades of league running for that to happen.

Some follow up research for someone got time to look into it:
Pre-dating the start of the league in 1897,the foundations clubs were in the VFA. So I assume there might have been a player around then whose father played with same club as early as 1860's. Anyone got any idea on that one ?

The actual father-son rule didn't come into the VFL until around 1950. Harvey Dunn jnr. (Carlton) was the first player recruited under the rule.

"League records indicate that Harvey Dunn jnr. was officially cleared to play for Carlton’s senior team in accordance with the newly-introduced father/son rule (50 games-plus) on May 11, 1951. Next was Melbourne’s Ronald Dale Barassi (March 15, 1953); South Melbourne’s Hugh McLaughlin and Bob Pratt junior (April 15, 1953); whose fathers all represented their respective clubs with distinction." https://web.archive.org/web/2012061...article/tabid/4311/newsid/124390/default.aspx

Prior to this, there would have been many examples of sons playing for the same team their father played for. For example, Teddy Rankin played for Geelong in the VFA (1891-1896) and the VFL (1897, 1899-1910), and had three sons (Bert, Cliff and Doug) play for Geelong. Bert Rankin debuted in 1912.

I don't have the name of the first son (to play in the VFL) of a player who played for the same club (in the VFA) but there's likely to have been at least one player in the first year or two of the VFL.

This may well be the dumbest and most pointless stat question ever, but for anyone who has data on all current players, what percentages of players wear a number lower than, exactly, or higher than their age respectively? It was just a super weird thought I had watching the game on Saturday and figured it might run pretty close. Obviously everyone who wears 1-17 is older than their guernsey, while most players in the 33-50 bracket would be younger.
