I’m thinking that the old Footy Stats Diary site might have kept a list of what round coaches got sacked.

Anyway, neither coach was in danger after a loss tonight, and especially not Worsfold as I just didn’t think Melbourne were good enough to beat Essendon.

Demons back in front....Can't jump the gun with the atrocious umpiring this season thus far.....It appears the umpires will determine the winner of the premiership in 2019, if the season thus far is any gauge…..Deplorable.

Mike Patterson was sacked as St.Kilda coach after Round 2 in 1980 and replaced with Alex Jesalenko.
Just goes to Show the precarious nature of the coching gig back in the day.

It was Jesaulenko who replaced Ian Stewart as coach of Carlton in round 4, 1978. As Captain-Coach in fact....He then went on to Captain/Coach Carlton to the flag in 1979, the very last person to do so in VFL/AFL history......Only to be shown the door at the beginning of 1980, with David Parkin his replacement.

Fancy that scenario in this day & age?....A premiership coach & a favourite son & club champion, being given the heave-ho?....That's just how ruthless the Blues were back in the day.

Little wonder then why the Saints were so keen to get him on board so early, the following season.

Pretty sure Parkin coached Hawthorn til the end of 1980.
Yeah, just checked....Apparently Peter 'Percy' Jones filled in that year.....Can't quite recall the politics around the whole Jezza leaving scenario. It did however, put my mum off football forever thereafter, due to Carlton's treatment of her favourite player.

Jezza got caught up with the political turmoil at Carlton, which involved George Harris resigning as President in late 1979 and being replaced by Ian Rice in early 1980.

Jezza backed Harris and was forced the leave Carlton as a result. St.Kilda recruited him as a player only, but soon elevated him to playing coach when they lost the first two games of the 1980 season.

Here are the details from a story on the Carlton website:

Jezza's departure from Carlton was mainly due to him supporting the outgoing president, George Harris. It cost him the coaching job. Then Percy Jones took over in 1980. The Blues won the 79,81 & 82 flags. That 80 flag would have been given them a legup in history for the old 4 peat!

Here's a random one
I noticed Ron Barrassi wore number #2 in the 1958 GF loss instead of he usual #31 anyone know why?
Tony Jewell had number #39 for all but the 1969 season when he had the number #1 but then was back in the number #39 for the 1970 season
Anyone have any answers on these 2 random finds
Cheers

This should cover the first one. It was in the Grand Final Football Record:

Paddy Guinane had been wearing #1 and retired at the end of 1968. Obviously that number was available and Jewell wore it in 1969, then went back to #39 for 1970, his final season. Nobody wore #1 in 1970, it seems.

As for why Jewell reverted to his original number after just one season in #1, I've no idea! Hopefully someone comes along with a better answer!!

What is the earliest in a season that every team has won and lost at least one game?

I'd expect R5 to be earlier than usual, particularly over the last few years.

I believe 1997 had a similar start - everyone had won one by round three and Essendon had their first loss in round four.

FWIW, the minor premier that year finished on 15 wins.

This is the earliest with 18 clubs.

Every club had won and lost by Round 4 1997 (16 clubs). Also Round 4 in 1987 (14 clubs), and 1940/1941/1957 (12 clubs).

Technically, every club was at least 1-1 after three rounds in 1900 (8 teams). Round 3 was postponed and played in August, so the first three rounds to be played were 1, 2 & 4.

That's actually a good point - didn't even consider the two extra teams from 1997.

At the start of this season, Hawthorn kicked 87 points three games in a row - I'm curious what is the longest streak a team has had for kicking the same score in a row?

Three is the longest and has happened three times previously.
