Re: Post your stats questions here

Daniel Menzel has played 9 matches for Geelong.
All have been wins.

Who else's first 9 matches or more have been wins?

Menzell really should have gotten a 1-week injury if he wanted to ensure the record continued.

The record is 18, and four other current players also managed it.
http://stats.rleague.com/afl/stats/alltime/misc_players.html#12

Although if Menzell's career were to end soon, very soon, he could have the record for most career games without a loss.

http://stats.rleague.com/afl/stats/players/L/Les_Laver.html

Interesting to look at Les Laver's career for Geelong. 8 games for 0 losses over 7 years! 5 wins in 1926, then 1 more in 1928, another 1 in 1931, before coming back for a draw in 1932. I guess they decided they wanted to stop the downswing right there.

Laver coached Geelong seconds and was temporarily coach of the seniors in 1940 when Reg Hickey resigned part way through the season. Laver was offered the coaching position for the rest of the season but preferred to stay with the seconds. I wonder how many matches of Geelong seconds' undefeated 1930 season he played?

Re: Post your stats questions here

Dustin Fletcher is approaching 200 career wins.

Which players have played in 150+ wins?
Conversely, which players have played in 150+ career losses?

And with regards to Joel Selwood (84 wins in 99 games):

Which players have played in 75+ wins in their first 100 games?
What is the least career games played for a player to reach 100 wins?

The first part of your query can be found here...

http://stats.rleague.com/afl/stats/alltime/misc_players.html#02

It really is a mind-boggling stat to see that Michael Tuck played in 302 VICTORIES!!! More wins than about 99.9% of players ever even play!

That will never be broken i am certain, Joel Selwood would need to play close to three more career blocks replicating his current success rate to overtake that.

As far as the second part of the question goes, i'd say it's Ron the Bear time!!:p

Selwood's on target for 100 wins from 115 games (currently 84-15).

Varcoe's on target for 100 wins from 111 games (currently 71-11).

A few other Cats are also thereabouts.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Question prompted from thread in the main forum.

- Games where Team A has kicked 2 more goals than Team B but didn't win?
- Games where Team A has kicked 3 more goals than Team B but didn't win?

Don't think we need to go to 4 goals. I worded them such to include draws (eg. 1948 GF).

Re: Post your stats questions here

I've heard commentators mention Chris Scott in the same breath as some other coach who had an undefeated start to their coaching career. Problem is I've never quite caught who they mentioned.

Coaches that have had a 4-game winning streak to start their coaching career?
Coaches that have had a 4-game losing streak to start their coaching career?

Re: Post your stats questions here

I'm on a roll.

Collingwood and Geelong meet again in Round 24.

Years where the two grand finalists met in the last round of the H&A season?

I'm kind of hoping it's never happened.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Debut coach undefeated start.

9 Dyer senior, Jack Ri 1941

Richmond lost round 4 of 1941 to Essendon.

DB glitch?

Hmmm, Dyer did indeed play and coach that day, and was criticised for his tactics. The match he missed on state duty in 1941 was the R11 game.

Not sure how you picked up on this, but thanks for pointing it out. An amateur record-keeper I might be, but I value accurate data!

I was asked by somebody how Chris Scott's record compared. When I looked at teams that had won 7 or more of their first matches of a season, Richmond 1941 was not one that came up. I was concerned that either you or I had a data entry error somewhere.

Be assured your "amateur" efforts are what I would trust over the AFL Record Season Guide for instance. The errors in it indicate that there is nothing as sophisticated as your database behind it.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Is it possible to obtain a distribution of the different combinations of quarter by quarter leads from all matches played.

Let's say for every game won by a side, they obviously are leading after the 4th quarter, but there should be 8 combinations of how they got there quarter by quarter:

A=Ahead, B=Behind

AAAA - ahead at each change
BAAA - behind at the first change, ahead at the other 3
ABAA
AABA
BBAA
BABA
ABBA
BBBA - behind at the first 3 changes, ahead after full time

Obviously drawn matches and level scores at any change blows out the number of combinations significantly so perhaps exclude them from the sample.

Re: Post your stats questions here

There's been 13,668 decisive games, of those 12,962 didn't have any drawn qrt scores.

AAAA 7460
BAAA 2080
ABAA 788
AABA 312
BBAA 843
BABA 423
ABBA 243
BBBA 813

Players that have played on their 35th or later birthday?

If the list is too short, go back to 33rd to include Brent Harvey.

Not an answer, but where it could have happened.

1998: North Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs were top 2 going into the last round, where they played each other at the MCG. North won by 5. They remained top 2. But the Bulldogs didn't make the GF.

2002: Port and Brisbane were top 2 going into the last round, where they played each other in Adelaide. Port won by 6. They remained top 2. But Port didn't make the GF.

2005: Adelaide and West Coast were top 2 going into the last round, where they played each other in Perth. Adelaide won by 8. They remained top 2. But Adelaide didn't make the GF.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Found three.

1956:
- In an 18-game season, Melbourne (1) travelled to Collingwood (1) in Round 18 and won by 13 points.
- After that match, Melbourne finished on top, Collingwood 2nd.
- They met again in the Grand Final where Melbourne won again, this time by 73 points.
- These teams actually met 3 times in 4 weeks. Melbourne won each time.

1963:
- In an 18-game season, Geelong (2) travelled to Hawthorn (1) in Round 18 and won by 38 points.
- After that match, Hawthorn finished on top, Geelong 2nd.
- They met again in the Grand Final where Geelong won again, this time by 49 points.
- These teams actually met 3 times in 4 weeks. Geelong won each time.

1967:
- In an 18-game season, Richmond (1) travelled to Geelong (3) in Round 18 and won by 12 points.
- They met again in the Grand Final where Richmond won again, this time by 9 points.

Re: Post your stats questions here

I have a question.

With our team's induction into the AFL this year, and having already played around 35 players on our list, can anyone find some stats regarding the number of players on a team list who have played a game for their club for the season? (I dunno if I can word this any better, but hopefully you understand. haha)

Players used? Prior to the introduction of restricted lists, there are more than 200 instances of clubs using 40+ players in a season, the most being 62 by St.Kilda in 1911.

Sydney used 46 in 1990, when there was a mid-year draft in place. Most in the era of finite lists was Richmond last year, with 42.

This year:
35 Gold Coast
32 Adelaide
31 Port Adelaide, St.Kilda
30 Brisbane, Sydney, West Coast, Western Bulldogs
29 Carlton, North Melbourne
28 Essendon, Hawthorn, Melbourne, Richmond
26 Collingwood, Fremantle, Geelong
