longest quarter in footy ?

any longer than tonights game ?

lights out game in '96 3rd quarter ess v st k 3rd quarter stopped saturday night and continued on the tuesday night ??
Did not see last night's game. I think there was a quarter over 40 minutes between Carlton and Bulldogs in the 1980's. Crowd was on the ground as some big fight behind the goals and police I think had their work cut out, sorting it out in quick fashion.

Also, this very season, I turned up late to reserves match at Princes Park between Carlton and Brisbane. Looked at scoreboard when got in and we were around 13 goals and I assumed it was well into the second quarter. Turned out the quarter time siren had not gone yet. Think it went about 40 or 41 minutes.

I just saw that on the weekend Adelaide had 4 rookies playing

Is this a record?

ps. I would count players who started the year rookie listed before being promoted to the senior list as rookie listed player for that year.

Richmond fielded all six rookies in Round 9-11 last year - Aarts, Baker, Chol, Eggmolesse-Smith, Pickett, Stack.

Sydney scored 201, 236 and 198 in Rounds 16-18 of the 1987 VFL season. Is the 437 points in the first two games the record aggregate score by a team in consecutive VFL/AFL matches, and is the 635 points in all three games the record aggregate score by a team in three consecutive VFL/AFL matches? What are the aggregate records for 4 and 5 consecutive matches?

There is no way any other team has scored 30 goals or more, three rounds in a row, so that is a clear record.
Also, the 635 is certainly the aggregate for three consecutive games. Geelong have highest scoring season on record in 1992 and hold it for four and five consecutive games in a row. Geelong 805 points for four games in a row that season.
953 for five games in a row from 5th April 1992. For six consecutive games Geelong scored 1134 starting from 5th of April in that 1992 season.

Is this the record for the most number of teams to be on the bottom of the ladder in the same season?

Six

2004 - Essendon (2), Geelong (1), Adelaide (1), Richmond (3), Collingwood (4), Hawthorn (11)
2019 - Essendon (1), Melbourne (3), North Melbourne (1), Sydney (1), Carlton (8), Gold Coast (9)

Geelong scored 449 points in consecutive games (239+210), 630 points in three consecutive games (239+210+181), 805 points in four consecutive games (175+239+210+181) and 953 points in five consecutive games (198+131+175+239+210)

They slackened off the next game, only scoring 181 :p

In 1942, Richmond opened the season with scores of 131, 196 and 175 points - an aggregate of 502 points in the first 3 games.

In 1981, Collingwood opened the season with scores of 159, 178 and 157 points - an aggregate of 494 points in the first 3 games.

Two questions:

Are these the two highest aggregates for the first 3 games to start a season?

Is Collingwood in 1981 the only team to score more than 150 points in each of the first 3 games to start a season?

2020 aside, when was the last VFL/AFL season where all clubs didn't register an average of 100+ for and 100+ against?

Looks like 1965 is the answer. In this 18-rounds season the highest points-for total was 1573 by St Kilda giving them an average of 87.3 per game and the highest points-against total was 1742 by Hawthorn giving them an average of 96.7 per game.
2019 came close with no team averaging 100+ for and only bottom team Gold Coast averaging 100+ against.

Pretty bleak numbers.

Anyone know where to get stats for spoils and smothers from a game? One percenters are the best I can find but they incorporate other stuff I'm not interested in like bumps.

And, does anyone know anywhere that shows quarter by quarter stat counts for players and teams from games? Best I have been able to find is this site (https://dream-stats.com/home) which actually has everything you could want, but I fear that that site is going to go under sometime in the near future! Surely they are getting their data from somewhere...

Maybe i should have felt a bit better about Geelong's 9.14.68 to 11.10.76 defeat as one of the over 41,000 squashed in at K.P in Round 4 then...the Pies being held to less than half their average at the time.

Similarly Geelong's rollicking run in 1992 was also ended by a game with a near identical scoreline, which i also attended....Geelong had scored 175, 239, 210 and 181 in the preceding 4 weeks, only for a wet day at Waverly and 5 goals to Daicos seeing the Pies hold Geelong to just 9.12.66, Collingwood winning with 12.9.81.

Hawthorn were 31 points up with 5:15 left in the last quarter and failed to win. Has there ever been a bigger margin chased down in such a small time?

Watching the 'Geelong off-cuts Cup' between Brisbane and West Coast, the four ex-Cats have all scored a goal, being Jones, Vardy, Cockatoo and McCarthy. Might be a cooky and hard question to ask, but how many times would more than four ex-players of one club kicked a goal in another match?

Bit fiddly but you can get spoils from the AFL site by opening a game, going into Player Stats, clicking My Stats and selecting spoils from near the bottom.

I suspect they're doing some sort of screen capture from the AFL site at the quarter breaks. Don't know of anywhere else that has it.
