With Bevo having played for both teams in the 2021 Grand Final, what other previous coaches have coached a Grand Final involving teams they played for?

I'm confused (from Stats Observations just the other day)!!:

I know, I know. :$

What would have been more embarrassing is if I'd asked that question in the stats observation thread, although I'd like to think had I opened that thread I would have come across my post.

Richmond's William James is a one game career player, appearing for one match for the Tigers in 1920, and happily for James the match was the 1920 GF won by Richmond over Collingwood, making James a premiership player despite just one senior appearance.

While the career of William James is unique, are there any other cases of one game players whose only appearance was for the team that went on to win the premiership that year? I had a look on AFL Tables, and while 1 game players are listed there are very many of them, their clubs listed but not the year they played their only senior match, which makes finding them - if indeed there are any more - difficult.

Thanks Ron the Bear, that is amazing, how do you do it?

Some interesting things I noted on the list:

Two players are also in the 'one game for a draw' club

After coming up fairly regularly with the longest gap 7 years from 1928-1935 and 1943-1950, there was an astonishing 35 year gap between David Jacks playing 1 game for the Tigers in 1967 and Darren Bradshaw 1 game for the Lions in 2002.

After this there was another 12 years before Hawthorn had two such players in 2014.

Kieran Collins for the Bulldogs in 2016 is the most recent example of this. By coincidence in 1954 Jack Collins kicked 7 goals in the Bulldogs premiership victory.

As expected, one game players for premiership teams was more common in wartime, with Fitzroy having 4 in 1916 and Richmond 3 in 1943.

Jack Giles, Merv Richardson and Bill Byrne also notable among this group because they stayed on the bench all day and never had any playing time at all on field.

The “medical subs shouldn’t get credited a game” crowd would then essentially remove these guys’ careers if the ruling is backdated.

Thinking about one game players, one at the other end of the scale.

There have obviously one game players for teams that finished last, but are there any players whose first and only league appearance for a team that collected the wooden spoon that season was a win?

Thanks Ron the Bear. I'm amazed this hasn't happened since way back in 1952.

What’s the longest time a player has had sole possession of the ball before kicking a goal in a VFL/AFL match? Mick McGuane had the ball for 17 seconds when kicking his famous goal against Carlton in 1994.

Hard to think of anyone having it longer in a "free flowing" patch of play. Phil Manassa in 1977 GF had it for about 12 seconds.

Of full time senior coaches (not caretakers), who has the record for the shortest tenure between appointment and leaving the role?

I know of some coaches who did not complete a single season of their coaching tenure at a particular club. Malcolm Blight stepped down as North's playing coach in 1981 midway through the season and 20 years later was sacked as St Kilda's 2001 coach after just 15 games. Neither of Fitzroy's last two coaches in Bernie Quinlan (1995) and Michael Nunan (1996) saw out their seasons at the Lions, and each time caretaker Alan McConnell took over for the rest of the season. There is also the tragic case of the Adelaide Crows' 2015 coach Phil Walsh who died midway through that season.

However, I was wondering if there might have been a first year coach with an even fewer number of games before departure, maybe pre and during World War 1 or around World War 2?

Fred Phillips (Hawthorn 1933) would be hard to beat: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Phillips_(footballer)

Wow, I'd never heard of him. He died of blood poisoning possibly from the dye from his Hawthorn jumper getting into an open wound before coaching a single game for the Hawks.
He was a star player recruited from St Kilda. Only 27 when he died. Definitely one of the biggest tragedies in the history of the VFL/AFL.

The story I have read a few times says he took training on a rainy day/night and dye from the jumper (which was new) ran and got into the boil on his arm/elbow. Incredibly unlucky.
