I was going to ask the same question then remembered that I think it was asked last year. Carlton and Hawthorn had something like 35 rounds between meetings a couple years back. A good one from the old days is St Kilda v North Melbourne, played each other R2 1943 then not again until R11 1944.

I don't know if this is the right page, but Hawthorn- West Coast could be a 'double game' with teams playing in R23 and the first week of finals.:D
4 sets of results will generate this:

1.
  • West Coast win by less than 2 goals (Haw vs WCE)
  • Gold Coast win by less than 2 goals (Adl vs GCS)
  • Geelong win (Geel vs Syd)
  • Hawthorn finishes top, West Coast 4th.
2.
  • West Coast win by 2 goals or more (Haw vs WCE)
  • Gold Coast win by 2 goals or more (Adl vs GCS)
  • Sydney win or draw (Geel vs Syd)
  • Hawthorn finishes 2nd, West Coast 3rd

  • (this result is so insanely unlikely that if it happens, even the most one-eyed West Coast fan would call for an investigation)
 
^ I don't see a Stats Question there, but if you were wanting to ask about other such instances, I vividly recall Essendon and Richmond in 2001. Maybe Richmond were too good on the day, maybe Essendon didn't give 100% (surely not), but Richmond were victors in Round 22 by 4 goals. Yet 7 days later, Essendon miraculously reversed the result to the tune of almost 12 goals :p
 
its a shame the 2010 freo/hawks games weren't back to back, (1 game seperated) which was a 160 point turnaround.

I wonder if the essendon/richmond games are the biggest turn around between two teams playing each other two weeks in a row.

I guess that only involves true "turnaround" results, not where a team wins by even more the next time... if so, then wouldn't Hawthorn v Geelong in 1989 GF & 1990 Rd 1 be right up there (6-point win, followed by 115-point win)?
 
What if we extended that to twice in 3 weeks/games? Many probably already know where I'm going with this.

1989 QF: Essendon d Geelong by 76 pts
1989 PF: Geelong d Essendon by 94 pts (for a 170 pt turnaround)

Such a stat would include a number of 2nd Semis and Grand Finals.
 
With recent retirements (and there will probably be more to come) there are only 14 players currently in the AFL that played in the 1990's.

Bit of a follow on from a few posts back. It seems to me that teams that meet late in the season then in the finals more often than not have the results reversed. For example, as mentioned above, Freo played Hawks two weeks out from the finals, met in the finals and results were reversed (Hawks won 1st game, Freo 2nd). Richmond and Essendon in 2001 is similar.

Is there anyway you stats guru's can get the record on the change in results of teams that have met in the last 2 weeks of the regular season then meet again in the finals. (for example, could happen this year again with Freo meeting Nth, or WC meeting Collingwood, Hawks meeting Sydney etc.). Do results generally follow, or do they reverse?

BTW, more interested in results since final 8 came into place (1994?).

Good question. I think the only four are Darren Bewick, Garry Hocking, Michael Long and Barry Stoneham.
 
Was doing some quick views at various lists and noticed that Geelong got twice us much out of guys 26+ on their list this year than Essendon and Richmond (253 games, to 119 and 115).

Is anyone with a handy database able to show an age profile for 2012 games played for the various clubs, broken down as follows:

Games by players 26+ (26 by the end of 2012)
Games by players 25- (by the end of 2012)

and/or:

Games by players 29+ (by the end of 2012)
Games by players 25 to 28
Games by players 22 to 24
Games by players 21 or younger
