Re: Post your stats questions here

Does anyone have any idea what's going on with the Historical Statistics available through the AFL website? It's obviously a fantastic resource, so it not being updated since round 6 last year is very disappointing.

Re: Post your stats questions here

This is probably a question for Ron the Bear or others who crunch the AFL database, but since 1982 when South Melbourne moved to Sydney, what is the average winning margin of games involving;

1) home state team vs travelling team
2) home state team vs non travelling team
3) neutral venue margin ie both teams travel to venue

and if you can break #1 down further,
a) average winning margin of the home state team; and
b) average winning margin of the travelling team

Thanks.

Re: Post your stats questions here

The biggest loss by a premiership team was by Carlton in 1945, when they lost to Essendon by 100 points in Round 3 of that season.

But at the other end of the scale, what is the largest winning margin by a team that finished with the wooden spoon? I recall the Sydney Swans thrashing the Brisbane Bears by 74 points in Round 8 1992 at the SCG - before losing their last 15 games to finish last, a losing streak that would grow to 26 games by mid 1993. The Bears themselves trounced Fitzroy at the GABBA by a similar margin in 1991, but it was all in vain as the Lions climbed off the bottom with a strong finish to the season, leaving the Bears with successive wooden spoons to kick off the 1990s.

If somebody could advise me of this, and any other large wins by wooden spooners, it would be much appreciated.

On only 18 occasions has the eventual 'wooden-spooner' doubled their opponents score. Here are the other seven not in Ron's list.

Factor
2.52 St Kilda 78 Fitzroy 31 R9 1904
2.29 Richmond 87 Fitzroy 38 R9 1917
2.24 Geelong 85 Collingwood 38 R1 1908
2.18 St Kilda 85 Melbourne 39 R1 1904
2.16 Fitzroy 67 Geelong 31 R 10 1963
2.13 Essendon 81 Sydney/SM 38 R3 1921
2.00 St Kilda 42 University 21 R3 1909

Re: Post your stats questions here

Thanks Ron The Bear and Rogers Results.

I posted a thread myself some time ago about some of the interesting feats of wooden spooners over the years, such as University's winless 1913 team providing the leading goalkicker in Dr Roy Park; South Melbourne kicking the highest score for the season in 1962 against Fitzroy (and also the lowest score against Melbourne); Fitzroy in 1980 having a greater points for than minor premiers Geelong and Collingwood's bottom placed 1999 team not losing once by 10 goals or more.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Fitzroy in 1980 having a greater points for than minor premiers Geelong and Collingwood's bottom placed 1999 team not losing once by 10 goals or more.
Fitzroy's 101.52% of the top team's points scored is remarkable. (3 goals 18 behinds more than Geelong.)

Nearest have been:
Carlton 2005: 97.39% of Adelaide (54 points difference)
Sydney/SM 1922: 95.67% of Collingwood (51 points difference)
Sydney/SM 1994: 95.62% of West Coast (91 points difference)

Lowest by a bottom team St Kilda 1897: 39.77% of top team Geelong.
Biggest points difference: 1988 Hawthorn 1,083 more than St Kilda (61.2%)

Eight Wooden-spooners have managed to avoid being beaten by 10 goals.
Biggest loss for the year in brackets.

1916: Fitzroy (59 points)
1933: Essendon (58 points)
1921: Essendon (57 points)
1923: Melbourne (57 points)
1999: Collingwood (57 points)
1907: Essendon (56 points)
1961: Nth Melbourne (53 points)
1943: St Kilda (51 points) 10 matches.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Can someone please point me to a resource that lists the top ranked AFL teams for contested possessions last year?

Thanks,

Ron as I said before thanks for the answers to my questions. I just want to check something with you. Your total games played since the start of 1982 season = 2333 + 2510 + 90 = 4933. I make the total games 4967. Is there a ground you have missed, am I wrong, or something else???

Without having time to check right now, the missing games are likely clubs playing home games in their opponent's home state, e.g. North v Sydney in Sydney.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Ah yeah North v Syd in Sydney, WB v Syd in Sydney, Melb v Lions in Brisbane and I'm sure there are a few others.

For the record, here are the other 34 games, where home club is defined as the club playing a 'home' match in the away club's state.

Note that finals are included in all of these tables.

The 22 h&a games included in the above table are:

That should have read when, not who, did the Hawks play Brisbane at Carrara. Thanks for the link. That game just doesn't ring a bell.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Could someone please advise who has the best kicking accuracy for goal in AFL/VFL history.

Criteria say greater than 500 goals.

Lockett, Dunstall, Hudson, Coleman, McKenna are few names which i expect to see the list.

TIA

Complete records of behinds kicked only go back to about 1987.
See: http://stats.rleague.com/afl/stats/alltime/highs1.html

There are only fragmentary records of behinds kicked by individuals before the 1970's.

Re: Post your stats questions here

When was the last time a team scored no goals or no points in an entire match?
It's never happened, lowest score is 0.1.1 by St Kilda at the dawn of time.

This only lists total goals..

Were no records kept of behinds before 1970's ???

I was trying to find out which player had the best record goals v behinds in terms of %.

Thanks
