Re: Post your stats questions here

Carl Willis
46 games for University
29 for South Melbourne 1915 and 1920-21, so possibly fought in WW1 in the interim. Finished as captain of South, last game Round 18, September 17, 1921. He "died suddenly" (Encyclopedia of AFL Footballers) at Berrigan, NSW, aged 37.

Jack Brake also played in 1921 but his final game was in Round 4.

Interestingly, no ex-University player featured in 1916 or 1918, in senior games at least.

NB I think the last ex-South player was Anthony Daniher at Essendon, R20 1994.

Thanks Ron The Bear & Rogers Results.

I was forgetting Tony Daniher. I knew he had played for the Swans, but I thought he only played at Sydney rather than South Melbourne.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Gary Ablett has experienced a 157 point win against Richmond (2007) whilst also experiencing a 119 point loss against Carlton (2011). Is this the largest known player win/loss differential known?

Gerard Healy in 1979 played in the Melbourne team that was beaten by 190 points at Waverley Park by Fitzroy. In 1987, he played for the Sydney Swans against Essendon in a match at the SCG where the Swans won by 163 points.

In 1979, the 36.22-238 kicked by Fitzroy and the Lions' winning margin of 190 points were league records. The winning margin still stands to this day, but the highest score was broken in Round 7 1992 by Geelong, which kicked 37.17-239 in a 164-point thrashing of the Brisbane Bears at Carrara. Amazingly the Bears coach that day, Robert Walls, played in the 1979 Fitzroy team, and the Cats assistant coach/runner, Greg Wells, was in the Melbourne side.

In another twist, the Sydney Swans visited Brisbane at the GABBA in Round 8 1993, and were humiliated by the Bears by 162 points. Seven Bears - David Bain, Richard Champion, Troy Clarke, Matthew Kennedy, Martin Leslie, Roger Merrett and Danny Noonan - played in both the 164 point loss and the 162 point win.

One final coincidence is that John Hutton, who kicked 8 goals for the Bears in the 1992 game (the most by a player in a team beaten by a century), was listed by the Swans in 1993, but did not play in the game against the Bears. He did, however, put in an impressive performance for the Swans in a similar game to these against North Melbourne several weeks earlier, kicking 4 goals in a team that conceded 35 goals and was beaten by 124 points.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Which Geelong players have played in all of their last 24 matches at Kardinia Park. (Round 3 2008 - round 3 2011).

Thanks in advance.

Only Milburn. 23 to Bartel, Enright, Mooney & Selwood. Bartel & Selwood have played in 29 wins straight at KP.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Hawthorn were trailing against Melbourne at half time 3.13 to 8.3 (sadly I support Melbourne), and then suddenly, the Hawks kicked 8.11 in the third quarter and ran out comfortable winners in the end. Now, 8.11 equates to 19 shots at goal in a single quarter, and South Melbourne (nowadays Sydney) once kicked 17.4 in a single quarter against the Saints, which equates to 21 shots.

What's the most shots by a single team in a quarter? A list of teams who scored 17 times or more in a single quarter would be good.

In Round 21 1991 Hawthorn kicked 11.10-76 to 3.1-19 in the third quarter against Fitzroy at Princes Park, the Hawks thrashing the Lions by 126 points, 28.27-195 to 10.9-69, in the process.

Hawthorn and Fitzroy played two games together in 1991: Total scoring:

Hawthorn: 63.42.420
Fitzroy: 21.17.143

Hawthorn nearly tripled Fitzroy's score that year :D

Thanks for that.

I counted Chapman as only having missed round 22 2009 of the sequence but that was just by eye.

The next questions then are: Did any player play in all of Richmond's 24 consecutive wins at Punt Rd Oval?
Did any player play in all of Sth Melbourne's 24 consecutive wins at the Lake Oval?

Re: Post your stats questions here

Was chatting to a mate yesterday about how dominant Tony Modra was in 93, after only playing a handful of games in his debut year in 92. That got me thinking, who is the fastest player to reach 100 career goals?

I think it was Melbourne's Allen Jakovich in 1991/92.

The Lions players from 1991 might still have nightmares to this day about brown & gold jumpers. The 157 & 126 point thrashings of Fitzroy by Hawthorn remain the two largest wins by one team over another in the same season.

In the same year, the Brisbane Bears also copped two century thrashings from Geelong, the Cats winning by 102 points at the GABBA in Round 4, and by 101 points at Kardinia Park in Round 19.

However, it seems very rare for a team to be beaten by more than 100 points by the same opponent in the same season. Apart from the Lions and Bears in 1991, the only other instance I could think of was Footscray in 1982, the Bulldogs opening their season with a 109 point hiding from Essendon - and finishing it with the wooden spoon, and a 146 point trouncing from the Bombers at the Western Oval.

Can anyone name any other instances of teams losing to the same opponent by 100 points or more in the same season?

Coleman debut season: 21 games 100 goals;
Jakovich also 21 games but across 2 seasons.

Richmond over Footscray, 1980, by 110 points at Whitten Oval in R5 & 115 points at Waverley in R18 (I was at both of these :)).

Amazingly, Geelong also achieved it over St.Kilda in 1899, by 117 points in R14 & 161 points in Sectional Round 3, both at Corio Oval, only 28 days apart.

Joe Murdoch and Ray Martin for Richmond, Bob Pratt for South.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Not strictly speaking a stat question but if anybody's going to know they're in here...

Does anyone know what happened with the news reports for the games played in Round 16, 1968 (3 August). I've looked in The Age and Sun on the next Monday and neither of them have any match reports, just scores. This is the only time I've ever seen this and as it's across both papers it seems to me there's something odd going on. Strike of some variety?

Have also tried the Sporting Globe but the State Library collection doesn't have that edition in its collection.

Anybody know where I can get the Reserves/Under 19's stats from the Geelong/Melbourne played that day? I'm determined to complete the set of MFC reserves results from 1965-1999 and would rather not miss out on one because the newspapers were having a nervous breakdown that day.

Also if anybody has a match report from somewhere that they could scan that would be ace too.

There was a strike by members of unions involved with newspaper production. (Including journalists). The papers had to be produced by the executive administration staff. Look and you'll see lots of interesting spelling and layout errors.

There should be a story of the front page of Monday 3 August editions explaining the situation.

Have you tried the M.C.C. library? I believe they have copies of Football Records.

Thanks very much for that, it explains everything - I thought it had to be a strike when it went across both papers.

State Library has the Footy Records as well, I'll grab the details from there.

I know it's only the WAFL, but we got this in 1944 when East Perth (who were undefeated for the season) met South Fremantle (who didn't win a game all season):

Round 1: East Perth won 276-20 (256 points)
Round 8: East Perth won 118-15 (103 points)
Round 15: East Perth won 123-11 (112 points)

A season margin over three games of 471 points and a total score of 517 to 46 (that's a for/against percentage of 1123.91%)

Re: Post your stats questions here

First visit to the forum this year, I have a lot of catching up to do.

I noticed something interesting in this coming weekend's matches.

(a) More non-Victorian teams have home games than Victorian teams.
(b) 5 games will be played outside Victoria.
(c) Only 2 games played in Victoria.

So I'm guessing that (a) and (b) has never happened before. Am I right?

Round 16 will see (a) happen again (3 games in VIC, 4 outside)

Round 17 will see (a) and (b) happen again (3 games in VIC, 5 outside).

1991-R01 and 1992-R01 were possibly the first times that (c) happened (ignoring 1916).

a) has happened once previously, in R4 1994
b) has happened 19 times previously, first in R13 2001, and at least twice every year since except 2002 and 2010
c) also happened in the 'National Round' of R8 1952

Re: Post your stats questions here

At the moment the bottom 6 teams do not have a win between them, has this occured before?

In 1995 after 3 completed rounds, 5 teams (Sydney, Melbourne, Collingwood, St Kilda and Fitzroy.) had 3 losses and no wins.

I think that is the nearest but the current six includes two teams that have played only two matches.

Round 3 1991 had 5 teams without a win but 4 of them had only played 2 matches.
