So, Melbourne "tanked" it up? I guess that means there's a long history of it at the club. Has the VFL/AFL ever looked into this and perhaps taken some of their draft picks away from them?

What is the statute of limitations on these sort of penalties? For instance, how far back did the AFL look through Carlton's sordid (recent?) history in determining their penalties in 2002*? (Did they look back to when Jack started at the club as President, ie pre-AFL?) Can anyone put a date on what time period the penalties applied to?

*In terms of Carlton's penalties, they were not excessive at all. The problem Carlton had was the utterly unbalanced nature of their list (The most prominent current team example of this being the Western Bulldogs - who i still maintain are a good chance to finish 16th this year).
???????
No 'draft' in 1960 and Melbourne were premiers. By round 17 they couldn't lose the double chance because the two other contenders for the top two spots Essendon and Fitzroy played each other in round 17. The conspiracy theorists of the time though that Melbourne went easy so as not to lose players to injury for the finals, others thought they might be slipping (the loss to Hawthorn in round 16 was their first in a home and away match at the MCG in three years. No one thought they were cheating.

If there is such a thing as "tanking" (I'm far from convinced) for higher draft picks it doesn't seem to created much of an advantage for Carlton and none at all for Melbourne. Geelong who have won the highest percentage of matches since the draft was introduced in 1986 and who have never finished in the bottom three since then (or bottom four from 1987) seem to have being doing OK with lower draft picks.

What's the record for consecutive wins interstate for Victorian and Non-Victorian teams? Also, what's the record for consecutive wins against interstate opponents at any venue for Victorian teams?

What's the record for consecutive wins interstate for Victorian and Non-Victorian teams? Also, what's the record for consecutive wins against interstate opponents at any venue for Victorian teams?
Geelong 12 consecutive wins interstate 2007-09
(Nth Melbourne 11 1999-2000.)
Brisbane 8 consecutive wins interstate 2001-02 (Including the grand final.)

As for the 2nd part of the question, without an exhaustive search I think it would be safe to say
that Geelong's 17 consecutive wins at Kardinia Park 2008-2011 v interstate opponents would be the record.
Geelong was also undefeated against interstate opponents at Kardinia Park in 17 consecutive matches 1994-1998 (include a draw with Brisbane in 1996.)

St Kilda won 15 consecutive v interstate opponents at Docklands 2008-2011.
Essendon won 14 consecutive matches at the MCG v interstate opponents 1993-1997
Collingwood has currently won their last 12 matches against interstate opponents at the MCG.
(Nth Melbourne won 12 consecutive at the MCG v interstate opponents 1995-98).

Thanks for the reply. In terms of the second part of the question, I was referring to consecutive wins against interstate teams both home and away, regardless of venue.

Collingwood 19 - 2010-current. (11 won in Melbourne)
The Magpies have lost only one match (to Brisbane R10 2010) to a non-Victorian team in their last 30.
Geelong won 18 consecutive against non-Victorian teams 2007-2009.

Yeah, I thought our current run may have been close to a record. Thanks for the help.

Earliest: Q1 4:23
Collingwood v Carlton - Round 11 2012. Didak off, Young on

Latest: Q4 22:26
Collingwood v West Coast - Qualifying Final 2011. Didak off, Fasolo on.
Cheers! So Didak was the player taken off for both! Sounds like a future trivia question to me.

More than a week without a question being asked in Stats Questions - strange days! So ok, hope this hasn't been asked before and/or isn't too obscure!! Has there ever been a season where every player who has played senior football for a team that year has kicked at least 1 goal? Probably hasn't happened, so if not, what's the closest anyone has come?

Hasn't happened. Closest were:

Hawthorn 1987, 29 of 30 players (Robert Handley the odd one out)
West Coast 1988, 32 of 33 players (Guy McKenna)

Another 13 teams had all but two players score goals (most 38/40 by Essendon in 1994).

The two others with 38 individual goalscorers were St.Kilda 1980 (38/47) and Carlton 1990 (38/42).

Outstanding Ron, as always! I was kind of kidding, and most certainly had you in mind, when I said "or isn't too obscure!!" Do you ever sleep, by the way?!

Not much today, just got home from a 16-hour day at work (minus time spent on BF :)).

I work near the MCG and visited the Nando's van near light tower #2 during the 3rd quarter. Sounded like a good game...

It was one of the truly great games of football: high scoring, very high skill level, great comeback by the Hawks, just stunning entertainment.

GWS have finally managed to score 1000 points, after having played 18 games. Has any team previously taken this long to score 1000 points in a sesaon?

The last team to fail to achieve 1000 points in the old 18 home and away game season was Fitzroy in 1963.

The last team to fail to achieve 1000 points in the old 18 home and away game season was Fitzroy in 1963.
The last to take 18 matches to score 1,000 points were:
Fitzroy and WB/Footscray both made it to 1,004 after their 18th and final match of 1966.
WB/Footscray scored 3.10-28 to get them over the 1,000 points
Fitzroy scored 11.10-76 in round 18 to get them over the 1,000 mark.
There are many previous examples - starting with Geelong in 1903 who went from 981 to 1,010 in their 18th match that year.

The only teams to have played more than 18 matches in a season without scoring 1,000 points
have been:
Fitzroy 1898 - 810 pts.
Melbourne 1900 - 888 pts.
Collingwood 1901 - 978 pts.
Carlton 1904 - 884 pts.
Collingwood 1908 - 999 pts.
St Kilda 1908 - 981 pts.

All 19 matches.

The lowest for 22 matches is Fitzroy's 1,452 in 1996.
The lowest for 21 matches is Collingwood's 1,204 in 1910
The lost for 20 matches is Essendon's 1,018 in 1902

In cricket there is a well known trivia question as to which person was present at both Tied Tests, in 1960 in Australia and 1986 in India. The answer is Bob Simpson, who played in the 1960 Test and was present at the Test in India in 1986 as Australia's coach.

Can anyone think of any football personalities who were present at both grand final replays in 1977 and 2010? There is one well known name who comes to mind. Have a think.

Just noticed in todays Saints and Dees game there was 189 total points scored. 54 of these in the first half and 135 in the second.

Just wondering what the biggest difference is between the two periods.
The 81 points difference in aggregate scores between first and second half in the above match is the equal 23rd highest. (And highest since 2003).

The biggest difference has been 119 points - Melbourne v Geelong R5 1961

28 points in the first half - Melbourne 1.7-13 v Geelong 1.9-15 and 147 in the second half - Melbourne 16.11-107 v Geelong 6.4-40

Was Mick in the Grand Final sprint?

Edit: He played in the Reserves GF.

The Giesch was in the Footscray Reserves GF side, and I dare say he would've been there in 2010.

Edit: Oh, you said the replay... :(

Mick was playing with Richmond, so the question is why did that bring him to the MCG on the day of the replay?

I think Richmond played Hawthorn in a specially organised curtain-raiser match.

Worth investigating for those of us who believe such matches need to be assessed for possible inclusion in player career records. Of course, if it was an exhibition match with multiple changes on and off the bench, and/or selected teams were nowhere near senior strength - that is another matter. I'll check it out myself and post research results later in evening.
