great stuff mate, it'll be interesting if riewoldt and milne can get to moncrieff and matthews. riewoldt 48 and milne 81 to go. it'll be touch and go but those boys are in the twilight.

just out of interest what were hudson and matthews on? hudson wasn't around for many years so matthews might not have scored too many goals.

was there any more with both guys 300+ in the duo's category?

had never heard of dick harris before that post. he must have been pretty stiff to miss the richmond team of the century. 196 games, 548 goals.

That's all the 200+, so it includes all the 300+.

Hudson/Matthews was 564 (Hudson 399, Matthews 165). Only 71 games together.

Yeah Harris' record is fantastic on paper. Rover/forward pocket who kicked 5+ 38 times and 4+ 63 times. Only played 11 seasons and was VFL leading goalkicker in his second-last year at 31yo. Played a game in the Reserves aged 42 and kicked 4 goals!

There's perhaps a case to be made for his inclusion in the TOTC ahead of Stewart, who only played 78 games at Richmond (Brownlow notwithstanding), or even Weightman whose standing is boosted by his televised performances for Victoria. Case is weakened by not winning a B&F, though 1934-44 was a strong era for Richmond. Percy Bentley - captain-coach between 1934-1940, and a Victorian captain - was another great player who didn't win it.

sorry mate missed the second post with the 200+. it was on a different page for me.

awesome. i didn't think there would be so many. 86 couples with 200+ but only 14 made it to 300+.

Can't believe I didn't think of Franklin and Roughhead. That was on obvious one. And They are both still quite young. They could even give the 1325 record a shake. Still a long way to go though.

Goodes and O'Keefe are a combo I wouldn't have though of.

My guernsey number data isn't too reliable. I have it happening in 92 losses and 95 wins. Lachie Plowman (#30) debuted in a 30-point loss in Round 1.

You've just raised your level.

Here's another one.

As Steele Sidebottom will be the first player born in 1991 to play 100 games, it got me thinking, who was the first player representing each birth year to play 100 games?

Once again, you've outdone yourself.

Cheers Ronnie.

Do you reckon we'll ever stump you with our queries?

Is there any way of getting a breakdown of FF (Frees for) in a similar style of Mode of Dismissals in cricket.

Like 5 FF (1 HH contact, 2 HTB, 1 Push in back, 1 arm chop)

I doubt this is out there anywhere but if it was it'd be fascinating to see what players win and give away what type of free kicks.

It'd be very interesting but the data's not in the public domain. Definitely recorded by CD though.

Does anyone have any examples of a team winning a game by a certain margin, and then losing by the same margin in their next game (or vice versa)?

The only instance I can think of was the Fremantle Dockers. In their first season, 1995, they thrashed St Kilda by 71-points at Waverley Park in Round 10, but the new team found the Kangaroos a bit too hot to handle at Subiaco the following Sunday, and went down to North Melbourne by 71-points.

I would be very interested if there are more examples than the one above; any responses are appreciated.

Most recent example I could spot (with just a manual check) was:-
In 2012, Melbourne lost to St Kilda by 25 points in round 20, then beat GWS by 25 points in round 21. I'm sure there's been a fair few examples over the years, and hopefully someone here will supply a definitive list soon enough.

Note the clubs "achieving" this back-to-back: Collingwood 1912, Melbourne 1967 and Essendon 2006.

Also South Melbourne repeating it in the same rounds 1907-08, and North Melbourne's hat-trick of 34-point margins in 1987.

You probably don't want me to point out Collingwood's famous 1970 effort against the same opponent.

Ron The Bear, this has nothing to do with football statistics of course, but could you please tell me about your avatar photo (e.g. where was it taken), as it's been troubling me for some time?!

Hahahaha, that made me laugh! I'd never had an avatar until recently, and put some effort into selecting a thought-provoking photo.

It's a real place called the Crooked Forest, in Poland. The b&w shot I used kinda makes it seem more mysterious...

Thanks for that. I eventually concluded after looking at it plenty of times that it was a picture of a bunch of bent (crooked!) looking trees, and just wondered what was the story behind it. I'll now check out the link.

You're the first to comment on it. Might sound odd, but I'm quite pleased at your reaction. :p

That list of first players to 100 games by YOB is a very very good list of players. I'm hoping Brad Ebert doesn't come back to burn us, but then I don't think he was ever gonna reach his full potential at our club. His heart just didn't seem in it. From what i've seen his kicking is still a bit so-so, but I must admit have not watched much of him.

Thanks Ron The Bear.

I'm amazed how many times this occurred - I thought it would be rare, happening a couple of times a decade at most.

From a WC perspective - i was interested to see (or not see) Peter Sumich and Brett Heady as a pairing here.

What was their record together (I assume Heady didn't make the 200 goal cutoff)?

heady kicked 237 goals, 21 of them in 1998 after sumich had retired. so the max is 216, but when you look at the amount of footy sumich missed in 95, 96 and 97, i reckon heady would've ended up on about 150, and sumich 350 as a pairing.

RTB will be able to answer. We'll see how good my prediction is.

Most has been 7 occurrences in 1952.

Plus there are two occurrences where Carlton neither won nor lost by the same amount in two consecutive matches.
(Drew in rounds 1 and 2 1911 and drew rounds 4 and 5 1921.)

There have been 14,043 wins 1897-2013 R3 with 160 different margins 1-190 points
9,758 of those wins have had margins of 1 to 40 points.
Allows for a fair chance that the margin from match to match will be reversed.

There have been 40 occasions where two teams have met twice in a season and the result of the second match has exactly reversed the result of the previous meeting.
