There's a DOB of 10 Nov 1872 in The Encyclopedia of AFL Footballers (2011 edition) for David C McGrath - Fitzroy (1900) who I assume is the one you're referring to, as the 1900 Fitzroy playing list from the AFL Historical Statistics site is/was missing that birthdate. I'm not sure if there is meant to be any doubt about the DOB shown in the Encyclopedia.

M A Bobby Monk - Melbourne (1907-14) 21 Jan 1886 in The Encyclopedia, again no DOB in the AFL Historical Statistics pages.

David G. Bell - Melbourne (1909-10) 26 Jun 1890 in The Encyclopedia, ~~~

My question is about free kick differentials in a game.

Obviously in the North v Port game there was a differential of 23. When was the last time a differential was that great and how often does something like that happen?
Biggest in 20 years.

Which one of these do you have
Sid Thompson
Roy Finlayson
Ivan Sharp
Jack White
Jerry McAuliffe
Also (I got interrupted when half way through checking!):-
Sid Thompson - Footscray (1925 & 1927) 17 Jul 1905.

Roy Finlayson - Fitzroy (1929-1932) 31 Mar 1909.

Jack White - If this refers to Jack G White - St Kilda (1899-1900) the AFL Historical pages had/have 04-12-1876. The Encylopedia has no DOB for him BTW.

I just spotted John F "Jackie" White - Hawthorn (1933) 14 Jun 1912 in the Encyclopedia, he seems to be your man.

It does seem odd to me that The Encyclopedia of AFL Footballers (updated in 2011) has these DOBs, and yet the AFL site (last updated in 2011, at least from what I can see) doesn't have them, but anyway.

Thanks Rogers for your great info. As you have stated, stats relating to progressive margins within quarters do not date back a long way, but do you happen to have any stats for the game the Bulldogs played against Geelong in round 12, 2001. We were 47 points down in the second quarter, but my most recent edition of the AFL Season Guide (2011) does not feature this comeback in its Biggest Comebacks section within its Games Records chapter.
I'm also trying to discover the minute mark of the second quarter versus North Melbourne in round 15, 2000 when we were 42 points down.

For the record, I knew I had a copy of the second half of this game on VHS somewhere, which I had taped off the telly. I decided to watch it yesterday, hoping one of the Channel 7 commentators would mention when North had been 42 points ahead. Finally, halfway during the last quarter, with the scores lying at 94 apiece, Kevin Bartlett made mention that the biggest lead of the game had been when North were 42 points ahead at the 22 minute mark of the second quarter.

Ah, I just had 1/1/1876 for Ivan Astruc, as per his Wikipedia entry. Probably should delete.

I once asked Jim Main about this; the authors' research is independent of the AFL's. The Encyclopedia contains some other anomalies re games/goals - numbers differ slightly from the AFL's here and there.

Not sure I've followed this discussion properly - does anyone have Jerry McAuliffe's DOB?
It appears none of us do at any rate. This is my remaining 17 spontaneously winked into existence candidates

Read somewhere (Sunday HS, maybe) that the birthdates of all but seven players were known. That was about three years ago. I used to rely on the now-defunct historical stats section on the AFL website for the data, which was updated periodically. My database is still missing 22.
From AFL Record 2012 Rd. 3 (page 16):-

The AFL’s statistical and historical department has had great success tracking down missing details of former League players in recent years. However, there are 10 players whose
date of birth is unknown. They are: ~~~

I'm not sure where they're up to now. Also, I'd have attached that one page from the .pdf but it (Adobe Reader) won't allow me to save just one page. The article (by Col Hutchinson) is well worth reading, for anyone interested in such things.

Related to my previous post, these are the 10 players whose dates of birth were unknown to the AFL (at least a year ago):-
Ivan Astruc
Richard Thomas Campbell
Richard James Casey
Joseph Patrick Fox
William Hennington
Charles and Jack Johnson (Johnston or Johnstone)
James Schellnack
Thomas 'Gunboat' Smith
James Hamish Watson.

Just looking at Joe Fox, the original files at the AFL stats site (March 2006) had a date for him, I'm assuming Watson as well. They must have rescinded those dates.

Seems Watson didn't have DOB in any version of the AFL site I have, I can't explain where I got his DOB from, must have just buggered it up. I should probably remove both.

AFL Record 2009 Round 7 - Col Hutchinson appealed for information, including date of birth, on Fox. The pages I downloaded from the Historical Stats site a year or so ago don't show a D.O.B.

AFL Record 2009 Round 2 - Col Hutchinson appealed for information, including date of birth, on Watson. The pages I downloaded from the Historical Stats site (it was only in fact about 6 months ago) do show a D.O.B.- 25-08-1896.

There is no DOB for Watson in The Encyclopedia of AFL Footballers (2011 edition), for Fox it has 8 Sep 1877.

Maybe because the file was > 1MB in size, i.e. above the BF upload limit? I did a 'Save As Other -> Reduced Size PDF' in Acrobat.
The problem I'm having is not in BigFooty at all, it's trying to save just that one page of the .pdf file using Adobe Reader - it will only save the whole file. With the Save As Other option, the two choices are - Text / Word or Excel Online. Until recently I was able to save individual pages from .pdf files without a problem, something seems to have changed.

Still, it's not a big deal, thanks a lot for replying.

who are the top x amount of games played for people who debuted at 25 years or later.

And where does Ben Hudson sit? He's on 164 now and will probably be 175+ by the end of the season. Might not even be his last. Gotta be up there surely. Since his debut only missed about 15 games.
