1990 - premiers Collingwood lost R1 by 46 pts
1992 - neither grand finalist West Coast or Geelong won until R3
1992 - neither grand finalist Essendon or Carlton won until R3
1994 - grand finalist Geelong lost R1 by 65 pts
1996 - minor premiers and grand finalist Sydney lost R1 by 90 pts
1997 - minor premiers and grand finalist St Kilda started 1-4 including losses by 97 and 46

Adelaide were 2-4 in 1997 and won the flag.

They did finish 5th though and under the new system may not have made it past week 2.

I assume you mean 1998. In 1997 we finished 4th and won every final against 5th, 2nd, 3rd and 1st (but also started that year 2-4).

In 1945 season we lost opening 3 games and in round 3 lost by 100 points exactly. Naturally bottom of ladder at that point.
We incredibly won premiership and three rounds from end of home and away season we were two spots outside qualifying for finals.
We won the premiership. I suspect we had some player return from World War Two that must have been good for such a turn around within a season.

Is anybody able to post a table showing which players played in the most games in which their team/s kicked 100 or more?

Hi Stats people.

Suns beat Freo today, but kicked less goals - Suns scoring 1 less goal but winning by 3 points.

I know it would have happened a fair bit, but I was wondering what is the largest winning margin but scoring less goals?

Related to this, how many goals less than the opposition has a team scored and still won. I seem to remember a game in the 90's where the Swans scored 2 less goals, but kicked enough points to still win by a few points. That might be wrong, it is a very vague memory.

BTW, I'm thinking AFL era on this.

Thanks to anybody who can help.

16 points is the biggest winning margin for a team which scored less goals: 1985 Rd. 13 - Melbourne 12.9 (81) vs. Hawthorn 11.31 (97)
1990>
: 12 points is the biggest winning margin for a team which scored less goals:
1996 Rd. 9 - Essendon 11.23 (89) vs. Melbourne 12.5 (77)
2008 Rd. 6 - Hawthorn 14.22 (106) vs. Richmond 15.4 (94)
2012 Rd. 12 - GWS 12.2 (74) vs. Richmond 11.20 (86)
2018 Rd. 16 - Sydney 9.5 (59) vs. Geelong 8.23 (71)

This was my answer to a similar question (to the second part) a fair few months back:

This shows every case of a team scoring 2 (and 3) goals less than the opposition and still winning (you can spot the AFL-era ones among the rest):

Awesome, thanks for that. :thumbsu:

So no team since 1990 has managed to win while kicking 3 goals less than the opposition, 2 is the best - which is what I expected.

The full image attached probably has it, but is it possible to get a list of Fremantle games only where Freo have scored more goals and lost (as they did vs Suns yesterday) AND won when scoring less goals (i.e. the inverse).

No drama if you don't, appreciate this already.

Yes, only once (in 1944) has a team won while kicking 3 goals less than the opposition.

This is wins with fewer goals for Fremantle (X8):

Losses with more goals (X3):
2011 Rd. 18 - Fremantle 9.10 (64) vs. West Coast 8.17 (65)
2017 Rd. 14 - Geelong 10.14 (74) vs. Fremantle 11.6 (72)
2019 Rd 2 - Gold Coast 7.19 (61) vs. Fremantle 8.10 (58)

The Pies twice in '76 and '77 tried VERY hard to become a side to win with three or even maybe 4 more goals....consecutive seasons saw Geelong win 15.9.99 to 11.27.93 in '76, and in '77 Geelong 16.6.102 vs the Pies 12.25.97!

Geelong seem to be the side to perhaps elicit bad kicking, having played more of those games despite overall participating in fewer games than Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon and Sydney overall. A famous recent Geelong one was the 2013 PF.. where Geelong's 15.7.97 lost to the Hawks 14.18.102.

I was at a strange game in 1997 vs the Pies, another behind-fest with Geelong winning 9.26.80 to 10.12.72. Was a fine sunny day at the 'G but Geelong couldn't kick for peanuts then :p

I asked a question relating to this two years ago when Liam Picken was still playing. Now that he has retired, his career total of 198 games comprises 99 wins and 99 losses. Where does he stand in a top ten list of players who retired with the same number of wins and losses?

What's more interesting, is that there are no draws in that lot.

Fantastic, thanks Mr. Daicos*

* Interesting story, met a family couple weeks ago playing around the park. Mum vaguely follows Eagles, Dad is a keen Pies fan, called his first born Daicos, not Peter, but Daicos - apprently it was condition of marriage that father would get to choose the name of his first child.

So this is on topic, I count that as the only person in Perth area who named their son after the great Magpie fwd. :)

If I understand the question correctly, you should be able to find the answer here: https://afltables.com/afl/stats/biglists/bg11.txt

Just look at all the players with a 50% record and see where Picken's 99 sits:
1554111438808.png

Obviously the players shown with an * are still playing.
