Keep hearing about how bad Carlton’s injury list was last year? Anyone got any useful metrics on teams total injuries from last year? Even better, the last 5 years?
Thanks in advance!

Is anyone able to give a list of how many century scores each team has produced? I am interested whether any team has kicked 1000 centuries as yet. Also, can anyone provide the biggest game streak in between century scores? (Please include Fitzroy)

You can check for each team on AFL tables

AFL Tables
Pick a team - say collingwood, AFL Tables - Collingwood
at this page pick Win-Loss Records AFL Tables - Collingwood Win-Loss Records

And you see Collingwood have kicked a century 846 times and had a century kicked against it 560 times. Under this main table it shows, home, away and finals results against each team.

Given they were there at start in 1897 they have probably kicked the most but try other 7 original teams and maybe Richmond to confirm.

Consecutive games not scoring a ton. Under the All Teams on AFL Tables main page --> Streak ---> Consecutive Games Scoring < 100

They have top 10 but here is top 5

A few dark questions.
The entirety of North Melbourne's 1950 Grand Final team is no longer with us today, and until the death of Billy Picken last year, all of Collingwood's 1980 Grand Final team were still alive. It leads me to wonder:
  • What is currently the most recent VFL/AFL line-up (including reserves/interchange) whose players have all since sadly departed?
  • What is currently the most distant VFL/AFL line-up (including reserves/interchange) whose players are all still alive today?
  • Is the departed team more recent than the surviving team?
  • What is the shortest time between a VFL/AFL team playing a match and the last surviving player from that team passing away?

From the 2015 draft twin brothers Harry MacKay (pick 10) and Ben McKay (pick 21) were selected in the first round.

There are numerous instances of twins drafted to different clubs, but Harry and Ben have now been on lists for 7 full seasons and a combined 137 games with neither having played in a final.

Are there any comparable brothers/twins who have so successfully avoided finals football.

One that comes to mind is Robert Flower and his not-so-well-known brother Tom.

Tom Flower played 26 games for Melbourne from 1977 to 1979, winning 6 games and losing 20. So nowhere near finals action.

Robert Flower played 272 games for Melbourne from 1973 to 1987 but had to wait until game number 270 before playing in his first finals match (his last 3 matches before retirement turned out to be his only finals matches).

That is a good example and there probably are several in the pre draft era where players could effectively choose clubs allowing brothers to easily go to the same club.

It would be different since the introduction of the draft, as brothers now get drafted to different teams and particularly twins.

As an example Max and Ben King drafted in 2018 but Max has already played 2 finals in career games 17 and 18.

Nathan Brown (Collingwood) and Mitch Brown (West Coast) were drafted in 2007 and Nathan played Finals in his 1st season.

They along with the McKay twins were all first round draftees.

This shows all of the (sets of) twins who have played VFL/AFL football (from AFL Record Season Guide 2022):

There were no finals played by the Fleming, Stibbard, Cockatoo-Collins and Hanton brothers either. Obviously none of them played for as long as the McKay brothers have. With all the other sets of twins at least one of them played finals.

There's also this Wiki page: Wikiwand - List of Australian rules football families

Thanks for that.
So McKay brothers would have the longest initial finals drought from listing based on games played.
Ignoring those who didn't make finals it is also the longest on time as well.

This may be the record for most games by brothers with no finals (although not twins).

Geoff Cunningham played 224 games for St. Kilda between 1977-1989 with no finals games.

Daryl Cunningham played 41 games for St. Kilda (1983-86) and Essendon (1987) with no finals games.

Geoff Cunningham's 224 games is second on the all-time list for games played with no finals. His long-time teammate, Trevor Barker, holds the record with 230 games between 1975-1989.

Looking at their careers, Barker and Cunningham played in 7 wooden spoon teams while at St. Kilda - 1977, 1979, 1983-86 and 1988. Is this the record for most wooden spoons for a player?

Jim Adamson also played in 7 wooden spoon teams when with North Melbourne - 1929-31, 1934-35, 1937, 1940.

This year marks 20 years since there was an AFL match that produced an aggregate score of more than 300 points. This was in Round 10 2003 between the mid-ladder North Melbourne and the last-placed Western Bulldogs at Docklands, a match won by the Kangaroos by 11-points, 24.12-156 to 22.13-145. It is just the third 300-point game since the start of the century, with the others being North over Richmond early in 2000 and Essendon's famous comeback win over North Melbourne in 2001.

Although the standard of games has improved somewhat with rule changes from the start of 2021 that has resulted in better standard matches with more free-flowing play and higher scoring that is way better than the many terrible standard, low-scoring matches that blighted football especially from 2017-2020, the scoring is nowhere near as high as it was even in the 2000s, so I won't be holding my breath for a 300 point game this year, or coming years.

However, does anyone know the highest scoring matches from 2003 onwards? IIRC there was a pretty high-scoring match between Gold Coast and GWS around 2013 or 2014, the West Coast Eagles were playing reasonably free-scoring football in the early 2010s and Essendon and the Brisbane Lions got close to 300 points in the late 2000s, but if anyone could post a list of the highest scoring games after 2003 this would be greatly appreciated.

A couple of Dockers specific ones:
272: Fremantle 143 def Melbourne 129 (Round 6, 2005)
269: Fremantle 173 def Carlton 96 (Round 13, 2007)
269: Fremantle 152 def Carlton 117 (Round 16, 2005)

And one that comes to mind from other teams (look away Tigers fans) which might just be the highest in that time:
287: Geelong 222 def Richmond 65 (Round 6, 2007)

Thanks Falconista, those Dockers ones from the mid 2000s are a far cry from the Dockers team of the mid 2010s a decade later, that despite being a finalist played very low-scoring, and uninteresting football.

Thanks for the replies, I remember some of these games now. Another high-scoring game post 2011 was the 21.22-148 to 16.8-104 win by the Gold Coast over the GWS Giants in Round 5 2013 in Canberra.

I hope we see higher scoring matches in coming seasons, for example in 2019 there were just 3 games where both teams scored 100 points or more.

The West Coast Eagles and Brisbane Lions played a couple of high-scoring games in an otherwise low-scoring era in the 2010s:

252 points - West Coast 28.7-175 d. Brisbane 12.5-77 - Subiaco Oval, Round 18 2012

268 points - West Coast 25.10-160 d. Brisbane 15.12-102 - Subiaco Oval, Round 1 2016

Another Eagles game from the early 2010s I remember is the one between West Coast and the GWS Giants at Subiaco in 2014, which turned into a shootout and a 30.8-188 to 12.5-77 win to the Eagles. Even though it ended in a 111-point win in the end, it was a good standard game and very entertaining.

I used to enjoy watching West Coast Eagles games in this era, as they were one of the few teams that had a more open style of play that had higher rates of scoring, would take risks and allow the players to display their skills, rather than engaging in the low-scoring, low-standard, ultra-defensive tactics that were increasingly blighting the AFL by this time, and which would become the normal type of game by the late 2010s.

Different era - but re your combined points total upwards of 280 pts

2 games i think deserve a mention - and they were both at the old Lake Oval - South Melb home ground

Now your Magpie supporting mate - EMU Boy - is fascinated by Sth Melb v Geel games in the 1970s - he quoted so many bizarre games - particularly with Sth Melb winning - hah - you know - they hadnt won a game for a season and they beat Geel by a pt - and did it 2 years running - ha - ha -ha

Bottom line - in that decade - both clubs were basically no good at all - but the 2 games im going to quote - they were both half decent at the time around 5th to 8th - and in one of the games there was a little bit riding on it

Round 20 - 1978 Geel are 5th ( in a final 5 ) and Sth Melb are 1 game out of the 5 but with a superior % - so a win and they leapfrog Geel - have a look at the qtr by qtr scores

Sth Melb 8.2 14.3 19.6 24.11 155

Geel 9.3 18.3 21.7 26.11 167 - so a combined total of 322 pts

Then the opening round - round 1 - 1976 again at the Lake Oval

Sth Melb 5.1 11.5 16.9 23.15 153

Geel 6.2 13.4 21.5 25.7 157 a combined points total of 310
