Stats That Matter

Here are some stats that don't matter. ..

After last night, our season is evenly balanced:
  • We have played 12 games, for 6 wins and 6 losses
  • We have scored a total of 756 points for the year
  • Scores against = 756 points
  • We are 9th on the ladder out of 18 teams
  • Our average score is 63 points per game
  • The average number of games played on our list was 63 at the start of the year (ranked 9th in the competition)
  • We have kicked 108 goals for the year
  • ...and 108 points
  • If there seems to be a theme of 6's & 3's, well 6 x 6 x 3 = 108
So if you are wondering what does all this means? Answer: I have too much time on my hands ;)
You'll see this on the bounce next week. Surely.

The stat that does matter out of all this is that despite being completely even with our opponents so far across the season, we've scored 25 more times than them.
We should be further up.

Good point Stamos, but I can only think of one game where goal kicking accuracy hurt us and that was round 2 against the Dees: 7.11 v's 8.6
But on the other hand, it was our superior goal kicking accuracy that saved us against the Pussy Cats the next week 12.7 v's 11.11
So it evens out, just like everything else. I forgot some other stats about our balanced season. We have won a game after the siren and lost one, we have won a game by a point and lost one. What a weird year!

By the way, I'm not convinced scoring accuracy is a big problem for us, regardless of what some in the media might say (including the bloke who proposed to his wife with a burger ring), except maybe in the wet? If you rewind to before the last 2 games (Freo: played in a storm; Suns: sweat & dew in the tropics) our goal kicking was 96.80. That's an accuracy of 55%, which is fairly typical across the AFL I think?
So on that note, bring on sunny Queensland :blacksunrays:

22 scores from 40 inside 50s.
Why is our backline so s**t. Why does every other find a spare behind the ball and out marks our forwards. They’re constantly second to the ball. None of our forwards attack the contest and make them hurt.

It wasn't our backline, it was our midfield

Every time one of our forwards had separation, it was kicked over their heads

Our mids are the problem, one paced joggers who cannot kick to advantage.

We make ourselves look worse than we really are at both ends.

Best two KP defenders in the AFL.

Hmm another way to look at it is why are Weitering and Jones contesting so many 1 on 1s?
Slingshot footy with our midfielders unable to slow down the opposition ball through the middle, which is why our defence doesn't have time to setup properly.
But definitely not discounting the might of Weiters and Jones.

Or you could see that they contest more than anyone and still win more of those as a %.

Love Welters and Jones (through a bit of a worry that we leave them 1v1 so often) but is Plow really that bad?
I think it has a lot to do with him attempting to get off his man to help weiters and jones when they’re out of the contest and the stat goes against him as he’s closest or more in the contest.

I think A lot of plows negative attention is because he covers so much ground.. he's quite often ending up with sps or simmo or dochs forward on the rebound depending on who is in the most dangerous position.

Interesting stats when a new coach takes over, in terms of wins, 1st half versus 2nd half of the first season (Used more recent appointments)

Nicks 0 - 3
Fagan 1 - 4
Rutten 5 - 6
Longmuir 3 - 4
Dew 3 - 1
Goodwin 5 - 7
Noble 1 - 2.5
Good post - you think it has to take time for a side to play together and gel together under a new game plan.

Testament to Voss and co, hopefully upwards from here.

Interesting and unexpected. Sort of puts paid to the old adage that teams lift immediately under a new coach.

Only GCS under Dew had a better first half than second, and perhaps that can be put down to Gold Coast's performances over the whole time they've been in the comp - they've generally started seasons well, and faded away when winter hits.

2011 2-4 after 6 matches, one win rest of season..
2012 didn't follow pattern - just 3 wins for season, all second half
2013 5-6 first half, 3-8 second
2014 7-2 after 9 matches, looked certainties for first final series, just won another 3 matches for season, missed out.
2015 a bit like 2012, just one win in first half, 3 in second
2016 3-0 to start, just won another 3 rest of season
2017 5-6 first half, just one win second half
2018 3-2 after 5, just one win rest of year
2019 3-1 after 4, zip rest of year
2020 4-3 after 7, one win (and a draw) rest of year
2021 3-4 after 7, 4-11 rest of year

We are bottom ranked in efficiency inside 50. 3rd top in goal accuracy.

Basically we get it in a lot, and when we shoot we score goals more often, but also turn it over going in

The deeper, more dedicated to the leading forward, the better result. While it's understandable that we want to get it in to the likes of Harry and Charlie, finding the better options is far more dangerous

If we are going long, 15-25 out is the hot zone
