Analysis Stats!

The Metres gained stat shows how many improved this week
What I find interesting (even though it is only the first couple of weeks - and things could obviously change) is that it seems to show that all the backs look to give the ball to Smith or Laird, who then distribute it further up field, while Lynch plays the role of link-man into the forward line. And thus they are sitting top 3 for meters gained. Then comes all the midfielders, then the other forwards, followed by the big backmen and finally Sauce.

Will look forward to seeing if these trends continue.

Am also kinda interested in putting together some kind of metric to determine who's performing best in a given role. For example, ranking backmen on their overall stats in categories such as intercepts, intercept marks, pressure acts, tackles etc... Though strangely enough, most of the backmen are in the bottom half for pressure acts, which isn't what you'd expect... Anyhow, I'll have a think about it all.

No I think you are on the right track in identifying linkages. Your analysis is pretty good. Linking backmen ie Smith we always said was the penetratorfor his metres gained , we always knew Lynch was number 1 ( so did Brad Scott  ) midfielders should be next followed by forwards then rucks.

Its hard to determine role just on impressions. I think the MG will show a role more clearly than trying to determine by game play. :)

Edit: maybe look at the size of the ovals as indicators. bigger ovals like MCG where you would assume Seedsman etc comes into it more. v smaller ovals where Smith and Laird do

We have the weapons to open up zones from the back like we did on Saturday. Think it was Milera's first goal when Smith off two steps hits Lynch on the Members HBF quickly onto Betts and then to Junior for his first sausage roll. We can do this will Smith and Seedsman we will crack zones more often than not.

You can add in that Sloane was a running option next to Betts at the time who pointed out Milera for Eddie to pass to, so while Sloane gets nothing there in terms of stats it's one of the midfielders providing that extra option as well breaking the zone.

Interesting that Seedsman is relatively low in the metres gained department alongside Atkins, considering the roles that they play.

Vanessa, do you have access to goal assists stats too? Or is it only score involvements?

I was going to ask, does the metres gained stat only count metres along the length of the ground, ie not inboard kicks...

Footywire has a selection of basic stats, including goal assists. Here, I'm just tracking those stats that the paper reports each week but aren't then made available to public sites like Footywire...

First of all, great idea for a thread (stats addict here), thanks so much for putting it together and good selection of data too. Metres gained is a real eye-opener. They clearly want the ball in Brodie's hand down back (why wouldn't you? #quarterback), with Laird though, I think he is the master at positioning himself as the bailout option. If he's not on the bottom of the pack, he gets himself in a spot to be first handball receive, or short 15-20 pass, if the long options for the ball carrier aren't there or the degree of difficulty is too hard to execute. His metres gained are through sheer weight of possession (as well as ball use when he has it x high %DE). That's why he's so consistently high in his disposal numbers and why he makes a damn good member of my SC team :)

I'm sure the team would love nothing more than for Seed, Atkins and Milera to be pumping up those metres gained numbers (Milera did go from 83 to 335 from game 1 to 2). Good ball users and line-breakers all.

Keep 'em coming MV!

I think it's because they are getting a lot of their possessions deep in defence and are therefore look to handball off or find a short target rather than a long bomb that may come straight back in.

The wings are definitely playing further back this year creating space up the field for the forwards.

Sloane was good a couple times on the weekend being the link man on the wing sort of like what Lynch was doing. Both are good marks, both can run all day and both a decent kicks to get it on quickly to forwards in space.

It's only meters along the length of the ground. This article looks at the stat. While there are obvious shortcomings of the stat - especially in isolation - I think it's still an interesting measure. The articles s bit harsh.

oh absolutely, I'm glad you've cleared it up though and it is as I had hoped to make my point:

Seedsman and Rat both look to work the ball into the corridor, often working at say a 45 degree angle or less from the perpendicular from goals. Point being that despite having lower than perhaps expected metres gained (as wingmen), its not through lack of damage caused on the attack.

Point of interest - got to give it up for David Mackay. Over the first three weeks, he's in the top handful on a number of stats. Second overall for Metres Gained; second overall for I50s; equal 5th for goal assists; equal first for bounces; Top ten for disposals, clearances, one percenters, rebound 50s... He's been good. Here's hoping he keeps it up.

Edit: plus top five in pressure acts and top ten in score involvements.

Does the sunday mail/advertiser publish this on their site? Where is it coming from?
It's in the physical paper. I'm just collating these stats each week out of interest, because you can't track them down anywhere else online... I think... If you can find these stats, please tell me. It'll save me 20 minutes every Sunday night

Our scores from turnover differential is glorious. Dat Team D!

Loving the way we play.

Jarryd Lyons also put up some good numbers in his first game.

Miss V , how important do the clubs rate these stats over another?
I wish I knew. The clubs obviously believe these stats are important in some regard, otherwise Champion Data probably wouldn't collect them. I'd also think that certain stats are clearly more important for different types of player. The Crows hierarchy are clearly not too concerned that Talia doesn't put up big metres gained for example...

So impressed with Hartigan's intercept and intercept mark stats !! He's coming along very nicely

Lyons game looks very good when you look at him across all those categories from the weekend . Add in the 2 goals and we certainly didn't lose anything by having him there minus B Crouch - system over personnel
