Also M Crouch's m gained is last night was terrible. I know that's not necessarily why he's in the team, but would be great to see that improve to at least S Thompson levels.
To me it looked like things changed when we took Thomo out of the scrum, sent Mrouch to get the ground ball and Thompson stood a meter or two back to receive the quick handball and find a target. Thomo is not so good at getting the ball off the ground anymore and that is Matt's bread and butter. You're not going to have big meters when you get the ball on your knees 50% of the time.

Plenty of inches though

Sorry I'll see myself out

He had 400 the week before.

Meters gained are a strange stat, he clearly gained more than 36 meters but lost a lot or gained negative meters due to hand balling and kicking backwards which is fine as long as it's effective.

I agree it's a strange stat. But 36m this week, and average of 199 isn't good enough. Everyone's stats were inflated last week. Not knocking him as a player, I really rate him, but it's still an area he could improve on to make him more damaging. A quick look at Priddis and Thompson and they average over 300 over the last couple of seasons. If he could hit that sort of level it'd really add some more hurt factor. He's got time :)

Just a quick look at which Crows players are sitting top ten in certain stats across the league... Looking at averages per game...

Goals
4th - Jenkins (3.08)
8th - Betts (2.75)

Handballs
9th - M. Crouch (15.30)

Tackles
Equal 7th - Sloane (6.84)
9th - Thompson (6.63)

Hitouts
5th - Jacobs (32.67)

Goal Assists
Equal 5th - Jenkins and Lyons (1.25)
Equal 9th - Tex (1.17)

Disposal Efficiency
11th - K. Cheney (86.19%)... I know I said top ten but I'm a fan and don't get some of the hate directed at him, so he's on the list. Plus a couple of guys above him have only played 3 games so their figures are skewed a tad. And just looked on the official AFL app, they have him in 9th!

Marks inside 50
Equal 7th - Jenkins (2.75)

Meters Gained
4th - Smith (565)

Kudos to these guys... Particularly Jenkins. Top ten in 3 stats. Well done sir.

For those struggling with opening both eyes:

The 2 most outside players in the league are widely thought to be Lachie Whitfield and Lewis Jetta.

Using 2015 as a guide (2016 still small sample)

Hendo 19.53 touches, 1.35 tackles and 28.5% possessions contested

Whitfield 21.67 touches, 1.81 tackles and 24.7% possessions contested

Jetta 18.25 touches 3.13 tackles and 22.2% possessions contested

Let's add in Brodie Smith whilst we're at it

Smith 18.19 touches, 1.86 tackles and 31.1% possessions contested

2016 numbers aren't very different

What does this tell us?

That Hendo's "contest" rate is directly in line with the sort of player he is meant to be. I.e. An outside player

And that this doesn't tell us much about the effectiveness of an outside player.

Can you give us disposal efficiency and meters gained and score assist with all that?

A few interesting things to note:

1. The Melbourne game was the first game since the infamous Bulldogs loss that we lost the free kick count.
2. Against Melbourne, Jake Lever failed to take an intercept mark in a game for the first time this year.
3. Only twice has Talia failed to take an intercept mark in a game this year. Both times were against North.
4. Atkins had 15 score involvements against North. Only Walker (16 vs Gold Coast) and Jenkins (16 vs Saints) have had more in a single game this year.
5. Jenkins had a season high 13 hit outs vs Melbourne.
6. Rory Sloane continues to be an absolute beast. Sweet Jebus has he been good. I sure do hope he wins the coaches award and the Brownlow ahead of other players who shall not be named.

And go you Crows. Was genuinely fearful about dropping Sunday's game. Just glad we toughed it out and won it however ugly it might have been.

Lyons & Walker topping M gained against Melbourne. Strange! But don't mind it.
Despite Smith having a down period he's still our clear winner in that area.

Those pressure act numbers for Charles are....delicious.
His whole game is building nicely and he is offering the team so much in a number of departments. If he could learn to steady and kick straight while on the run he'd be amazingly damaging...

Sorry folks. Didn't pick up a paper on Monday and unable to track one down via alternate channels... Anyone have a paper with the stats? Care to take a couple of photos and upload them here so that I can add the relevant stats to my spreadsheet? Cheers in advance to anyone who can do this :)

Here is a breakdown of the fixture toughness - so far and for the rest of the season.

I used "premiership points" as the ranking measure.

season_17games.png

Some things I notice ...
  • Adelaide have had the toughest fixture so far, and the easiest run home - with only 1 away game left.
  • West Coast have had the easiest run so far, and the 5th hardest coming in - with only 1 home game left.
  • West Coast and North are the only top 8 teams that have anything close to a tough run in.
  • One of Carlton / Gold Coast might leap over Melbourne / Collingwood / Richmond in the last 5 games.
  • Teams that have played the tougher teams at home - GWS, Geelong, Port, Brisbane
  • Teams that have played tougher teams away - West Coast, Collingwood, Freo
  • North's remaining fixture involves teams with an average premiership point tally of 47.20, Saints is only 30.40

I just might leave this here.
